I didn't see a thread dedicated to him so here we go.

Talk about the best keeper in the world.

I was just reading a story that Buffon has started a construction company called "La Buffon Construction". He has plans to remodel and rennovate his native city "Marina di Carrara". He's purchasing old houses, buildings, and hotels and turning them into elegant apartments.

He's only using local labor and materials. He's apparently making heavy use of a local prestigious marble ("marmo di Carrara").

That is very respectable and he should be applauded for doing this.

Many players choose to spend their money on women, cars and flashy jewelry....Buffon is beautifying his hometown. Props to the best keeper in the world!!
I LOVE SCOTCH!
thats good news, he seems like a nice guy in his interviews .

Buffon is an incredible character. Both as a player and as a person. He was a quantum leap in the evolution of Goalkeepers I think, or at least as big a leap as you could get in this already advanced world of goalkeeping after the patented Schmeichel Starfish jump. I remember the legendary comments after he joined Juve about how he had scrap book on every penalty he had saved and fervently studied penalty takers that he would be oming up against. He isnt just about honing his physical abilites, but he is uses great intelligence as well.

I know in here this will bring much debate form Italian forum members, but I do thik that these days Casillas is better than him. Ikers natural ability is frightening, but there isnt much between them. They are the undisputed top 2. Buffon is the one Juve player I would pay any fee for, and along with Nedved, the only one I have really respected since the day he went to Turin.

As for that story about his contruction agency, thats incredible. I read something similar about Gattuso how he always goes home and loves nothing more than a kick about with his childhood mates in the fishing town he grew up in and is frequently contributing money to the village, but its incredible to make such an investment with the main priority being rebuilding your local town and using local labour. Buffon is a great role model for kids in my eyes, and I dont think there are many guys in the football world you can say that about.

Well, if there's something I'd like to point out that is it. His biggest weakness, imo, is penalties, always seems to pick the wrong side. Of course, though, I remember the incredibly important save vs Figo, Juve-Real, but this is the point where he can improve.
Juve.
For all I care, he saved us a point this week against Milan.
I LOVE SCOTCH!
yeh i agree with juve1, he saved us against milano..

I think he gets nervous during penalties, when he does save penalties, you can definitely tell he has the ability to save more than he usually would.
dreamlander
Penalties are luck of the draw really. Its very rare you get keepers who are reknowned for beign good at stopping penos, plus, if they are good at penalty saves, you kinda question other aspects of their game like decision making and hand;ling....I mean, look at the 2 keepers in the world best known for being Penalty stoppers....Dida and Ricardo of Portugal.

Both have an incredible ability at stopping penalties, but both are very dodgy at handling and both have a tendency to rush out when they shouldnt or not when they should. If my keepers was as good as Buffon and yet never saved a penalty in his entire career, i would be more than happy to be honest!

True words, but we can't deny the fact that penalties decide a lot of matches, thus he has got to improve there. There is nothing worse for a penalty-taker than to see the goalie's eyes - extremely confident and frightening at the same time. But as you mention, Buffon is more like an overall-keeper: good at what he has to be good at, penalties are just the icing on the cake, which, on some occasions, may prove to be an invaluable ability when mastered. (something Buffon doesn't yet)

Talking about keepers who are reknowned for penalties you might wanna take a look on Lev Yashin, one of the best keepers ever. Rumor has it that he saved 150 out of 200 penalties during his career.

Toldone was a great penalty saver.

So, most football fans would list Buffon, Casillas and Cech as the best keepers in the world. Have the other two surpassed Buffon as of yet, in terms of ability?

Buffon wants same again

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon hopes that the Old Lady can carry on where they left off in 2007 and would be happy to see Amauri arrive in Turin.

The Bianconeri have excelled on their return to the top flight and are proudly sitting in third place, just a point behind Roma.

Buffon remains a key figure for the club and was voted Player of 2007 by Juve fanzine Signora, but he is taking the success in his stride.

“It’s just a small thing, but I’m not used to being singled out,” he grinned. “When Roberto Donadoni said Andrea Pirlo and me were the Azzurri’s stars I felt embarrassed.

“As a club, we can only continue down this road. We have done great things so far, but we can improve.

“Looking at things objectively, it would be a big achievement to finish third. Don’t forget that we have some great sides behind us, including Milan.”

Despite their superb progress, Juve still trail leaders Inter by eight points and it is hard to see the Nerazzurri failing to retain their crown.

“I will talk about the Scudetto if you like, but the problem is that the sides above us aren’t slipping up,” Buffon continued.

“In order to have a hope of the title we need other sides to lose. The strongest side wins the championship and, although it’s not nice to say that Inter can only beat themselves, the Nerazzurri should win it.”

Recent reports suggest that the Turin giants are tracking star striker Amauri of Palermo and Buffon believes he would be a wise addition.

“Having seen the talent he has and the performances that he puts in he is clearly amongst the best strikers in Serie A,” he said.

“Whoever manages to sign him will have a great addition and he would be good for the national side alongside the likes of Luca Toni, Fabio Quagliarella and Alberto Gilardino.”

The gifted shot-stopper finished by previewing the summer’s European Championships in Austria and Switzerland.

“We are the world champions, but two years have passed and we need to confirm our position,” he explained.

“That’s the beauty of football. We have a Group of death at the European Championships, but I take heart from the fact that the others are scared of us. We have earned respect.”

And many of these EPL fans claim he is big headed and he talks arrogantly in the press... dry.gif

I'm no Juventino, but FORZA BUFFON!

Cech is overrated imo, and yea Buffon does well whether his defence is incredible or mediocre.

Juve’s new Buffon fears
Thursday 7 February, 2008

Reports from Juventus’ training ground suggest that Gigi Buffon is once more in doubt for the trip to Udine this weekend.

The Old Lady face Udinese in a crucial Champions League qualification showdown this weekend and were hoping to welcome Azzurri goalkeeper Buffon back to the side.

The former Parma custodian has been absent with a back problem, but Juve medical bulletins had insisted that he was ready to return between the posts.

However, Buffon looked in pain during training today at Vinovo, especially when getting back up after diving saves.

The medical staff will be very reluctant to send Juve’s No 1 back into action before he is ready as they fear that his problem may become more severe and require an operation that could lead to months on the sidelines.

The good news for Claudio Ranieri is that Giorgio Chiellini and Mauro Camoranesi are fully recovered from their injuries and will be fit for the Stadio Friuli encounter.

Czech international Zdenek Grygera and Azzurri man Raffaele Palladino only took part briefly in a light training session.

Christian Molinaro was absent, as were Marco Marchionni and Jorge Andrade who had a session in the gym.

I am a big fan of Casillas but I still rate Gigi as the greatest goalkeeper in the world. Proof : This season
Juventus' defenders are nothing but ordinary with only Chelleni being excellent. But Gigi is the one who has been saving Juve everytime this time.
No doubt the best goalkeeper in the world.

Buffon: "We'll Fight To Win Every Trophy"

He's back from his holidays fully refreshed, after being one of the best performers for Italy at the European Championships, and now he's ready to raise the stakes again. Gigi Buffon has gone back to work to prepare for another season in the spotlight:

"We'll fight to win the Champions League, as we will to win the League – he explained to Juventus Channel - all those trophies that Juventus have always fought for. It's going to be a long and very intense season and we must start to prepare it well right away".

Last year Gigi was one of the most cautious at Juventus when speaking about the team's chances to compete for the Scudetto, but this year, despite displaying his usual humbleness, he's conscious it's time to fight for ambitious goals:

"Ambition has always been there, even if we weren't on the same level as the others. Now that we've strengthened the team, our ambitions are more justified and we must never lose confidence in our potential. That confidence has always been one of our qualities and we need to keep it always within us".

Definitely time to revitalize this thread. He was MOTM in today's 2-1 against Cyprus. We could have easily been down by four goals if not for Gigi. We didn't really deserve the victory, but that takes nothing away from his performance.

Buffon rushes to Italy's rescue

Gianluigi Buffon was Man of the Match in Cyprus, though he explains “that is what a goalkeeper is for.”

The shot-stopper kept out several great chances so that Italy could snatch a barely-deserved 2-1 win in stoppages.

“Of course you expect Italy to come to Cyprus and win fairly comfortably, so this is really not what we expected,” said the Juventus star.

“In these situations every element has to be taken into account. It was clear that Cyprus had an extra gear in physical terms, which got worse when we lost two players in the opening 15 minutes to injury.”

The Azzurri fielded an all-attack formation with Mauro Camoranesi, Antonio Di Natale, Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino together, but found themselves hopelessly unbalanced.

“It was certainly surprising with the way we were set out that Cyprus did not focus on defence. They wanted to take it to us and created real problems by spreading out wide and out-numbering us.

“We made mistakes too by missing easy passes, so that increased the Cypriot confidence and made it even more difficult.”

In the first half, in particular, the home team tested Buffon repeatedly.

“The start was such a chaotic run of shots that I can't remember which save was toughest! This is what a goalkeeper is for, though, to be ready when the others are struggling physically.

“Their job usually is to work hard to ensure I don't have to do much, so it is only right that sometimes I get them out of trouble.

“At the end of the day you can play with three strikers, but it depends on how fit and sharp they are, as they have to come back and help out in midfield.

“The Coach saw at half-time that Cyprus were constantly crowding us out and taking the numerical advantage, so he introduced Gennaro Gattuso to balance things out a bit.”

Buffon also commented on the transfer rumour that Manchester City are preparing a £60m bid.

“I like football, not fantasy football, so that story doesn't even deserve a comment.”

Buffon Unconcerned About Injury

Juventus goalkeeper Gianliugi Buffon is confident that the injury he sustained against Cagliari today is nothing too serious.

Juventus beat bottom of the table Cagliari 1-0 thanks to a goal from Carvalho Amauri.

However, while the Juve faithful will be happy with the three points, a worrying footnote from the game was the substitution of goalkeeper Buffon due to injury.

The keeper is in high spirits however, and is not showing any signs of worry concerning the injury to his right thigh.

“I felt something like a pin when I kicked out the ball. I asked for the substitution and waited until half time," he said.

"I asked for the substitution and waited until half-time.

"I don’t believe that it is anything serious - at the most I’ll be out for a week - but seeing the saves that Manningher made I can remain calm."

An injury to the world-class goalkeeper would be a major blow for the Bianconeri and the Italian national side, and scans will be used to reveal the full extent of the injury.

The last thing we need is for Gigi to be injured. But at least we have Manninger instead of Belardi.

So he's definitely out against Catania and Sampdoria. He might even be out against BATE:

QUOTE
Juve braced for Buffon absence

Juventus' medical team has announced that Gigi Buffon's injury will keep him out for two games.

Buffon had to be substituted at half-time of Juve's win over Cagliari yesterday when he felt a thigh pain as he kicked a clearance.

The Azzurri No 1 was insistent that the problem wasn't serious but the club aren't taking any risks.

An official statement from the Old Lady estimates Buffon's recovery time at 10 days.

That would mean that reserve 'keeper Alex Manninger would be handed the gloves for Wednesday's game against Catania and also next Saturday's trip to Sampdoria.

Meanwhile, French international striker David Trezeguet will undergo surgery tomorrow for his knee tendon injury

Trez will be out of action until 2009 with the maximum recovery time set at five months.

Channel 4

It could be worse. At least now we have Manninger, instead of Belardi.

Manninger is a very good keeper. I think he is a clever signing by Juve. I know Buffon rarely misses games, but the thought of having to rely on the guys you had as reserve is frightening. They were awful, Belardi and Chimenti. Manninger is an excellent shto stopper though and even when he makes an error, is very calm and cool and doesnt let it disrupt the rest of his performance!

Gigi confesses mental struggle Thursday 13 November, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has revealed that he battled depression during the 2003-04 season.

Buffon is the latest Serie A star to release an autobiography, titled 'Numero Uno', and extracts have been published in La Stampa.

Surprisingly, Gigi has confessed that he considered quitting the game five years ago - a season that ended with defeat to Milan in the Champions League Final - due to depression.

“Was it because of fame or money? There were thousands of reasons,” Buffon writes.

“Maybe you realise that you can't find the right woman or you fail to win the Champions League.

“I went away for two months to receive treatment and to cure the depression.

“Every time I fail to make a save this thing tries to come back, but you can't go away every three months to cure it.

“I don't have any regrets at all, but I started my life in football when I was just 17 and maybe I didn't live my youth as I wanted.”

Juventus face Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico this evening, but Buffon is currently injured so Alex Manninger will continue to fill in.

Wow...I really would have had no idea. Was there ever an indication of this in the Italian media? If not, how in Gods name did he keep it under radar!!! Incredible to think that he went through a bout of depression and no one really knew!
