Uefa looks at match-fixing claims

Uefa has given a 96-page report to Interpol alleging that 15 games in a variety of competitions were fixed.

The matches are thought to have been qualifiers for Euro 2008, the Champions League, Uefa Cup and Intertoto Cup.

BBC Sport's Nigel Adderley reports that Uefa has confirmed an investigation is taking place into the matches, which do not go further back than July 2005.

The news comes as Uefa officials are gathering in Lucerne for Sunday's Euro 2008 finals draw.

Interview: Former FA compliance officer Graham Bean

The story was reported in German magazine Der Spiegel.

The magazine alleges that the vast majority of clubs involved come from countries in eastern and south-eastern Europe, with Bulgaria, Georgia, Serbia, Croatia and the Baltics among those named.

Graham Bean, the former police officer who used to head up the Football Association's compliance unit, told BBC World Service: "They are exceptionally serious allegations if the stories are correct but they will be extremely difficult to investigate.

This is clearly very serious and potentially one of the most serious things that has happened in world football.

"Clearly Uefa, for them to pass this report across, do have some evidence of some kind that would suggest has come down the route of betting patterns or individuals rolling over and telling them what they know.

"Nevertheless if that is the case they still need to get corroborative evidence to prove what has supposedly gone on.

"If the evidence is there and football wants to take this on and deal with this properly with the police, then the simple fact is the punishments that should be imposed on any clubs or individuals found guilty should be extremely excessive.

"There is so much money involved now, not only in football but in the betting industry, whereby you can get a bet on anything, it clearly opens it up to corruption if a betting syndicate can drop on the right person.

"I can't remember anything happening on this scale before.

"For something of this magnitude and these type of games then this is clearly very serious and potentially one of the most serious things that has happened in world football."

This is very troubling to say the least. I can't even imagine the reaction if there was match fixing in UEFA Cup, CL and Euro 08 qualifying. I'm praying this isn't true but I guess we'll have to wait and see. What do you all think? What would you expect the consequences to be and what about the amount of backlash over a scandal of this magnitude?

The people who have fixed the matches an/or are involved as a leader to fixing should be jailed!
I cannot imagine it happening though. Whats the advantages of fixing anyways?

DOh...what else? People do match fixing because of those gamblers out there.
kensta
Really?
Like people gamble billions on it?
what are the benefits to the team then? they just do what they're told?

Yes you are right. As long as there are gamblers, match fixing won't die.

I sincerely hope this isn't true, disgraceful.

You serious? The bookmaking industry is massive, its practically run by the mafia in the US and rakes in billions of dollars annually. Imagine the influence you have when you set the odds for an event, a slight modification will generate/degenerate millions of dollars. Trust me its a big big issue, alot of money thrown around between bribing and winnings..

Anyway just to clear things up, Inter werent involved in any of this shit*runs away*

You can't deny that when you brings money somewhere, automatically there's a risk of fixed things.
It's the same in the everyday life, just in football you put some zeros in the end, because it's a thing where there's a lot of money.

Liverpool's Besiktas rout in match-fixing investigation

Dec 5 2007 by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

LIVERPOOL’S record-breaking Champions League defeat of Besiktas last month is reportedly among the games UEFA are scrutinising over claims of match-fixing.

The governing body are said to have been alerted by a rush of big-money bets placed shortly before kick-off on a heavy loss for the Turkish side, who were subsequently thumped 8-0.

Liverpool have not yet been contacted by UEFA regarding the situation and last night officials at Anfield said they could not comment because they had no knowledge of any controversy.

UEFA have handed police a list of 15 matches it suspects may have been fixed, which include fixtures in the Champions League, UEFA Cup and InterToto Cup.

I didn't see any dodgy decisions during that game. Liverpool were always going to win that one so why would they bother?
Carlo Gambino
Well UEFA and a couple black markey bookies must have...

It should die down, i havnt heard too much concerning the situation and more then likely UEFA executives will want to avoid embarassment by overturning the decision.

No-ones taking Liverpool away from Inter wink.gif

the only thing dodgy in that match was the ridiculous call by the referee to give shakhtar that pk.
CellSea
Did the bookmakers got caught?
CaptainCarrots
Its not an easy thing to prove and could involve investigations taking months

Im sure if theres guilty parties they will not be found! People just disappear in times like this
