The soul of Juventus through the nineties and upto now. Will forever be remembered in the history book for his loyalty, leadership and immense talent, will unfortunately also be remembered as 'the black sheep' on the nationalteam where he failed to live up to the expectations.

I take it you know what I mean. He was hyped a lot around WC 1998 and Euro 2000, but although Italy did qualify to the final in the latter, it wasn't really a Del Piero who played the way he did in Juve

Christian Vieiri....it took the WC 98 for me to really appreciate how good a player he was. He was a beast in those tournaments.
Totti was unreal in Euro 2000, arguably the player fo the tournament.....followed pretty closely by Toldo. And I actually thought, strangely, that Gianluca Pessotto was pretty exceptional that tournament too.
And WC 2002...Pippo was pretty good....ummm, ok, ya, I cant think of many more in that one!

Come on, if Del Piero was in topform for the NT they would've gone further than what they did. He was arguably the world's best player 1996-1997-1998 but what he delivered for Italy was extremely disapointing.

Del Piero: I Would Have Left Juve If Not For Lippi
Juventus hero Alessandro Del Piero has revealed that he would have moved to Parma earlier in his career had it not been for Marcello Lippi.
The Golden Boy signed for Juventus in 1993 from Padova, whilst still a teenager.
At that time the Bianconeri had Azzurri star Dino Baggio at the club, who was one of the best midfielders in Italy.
At the end of the 1994 World Cup, a tournament in which Baggio (like his namesake Roberto) impressed in, scoring crucial goals against Norway and Spain, Serie A rivals Parma put in a bid for the powerful midfielder.
At first Baggio rejected the move, and Juventus instead offered the services of Del Piero, who at the time was nothing more than a promising youngster.
Parma accepted Juve’s offer and Del Piero was all ready to leave, until the transfer fell through at the last minute, and as originally planned Baggio did indeed sign for the Gialloblu.
The rest as they say is history, as Del Piero has gone on to establish himself as one of the Old Lady’s true symbols, and their all-time top goalscorer.
The 33-year-old has no doubts over the reason why he stayed at Juventus, saying that it was Lippi who blocked the move.
“If it wasn’t for Lippi I would have moved to Parma,” Del Piero told the Corriere dello Sport.
This would have changed a lot. Perhaps Baggio would have stayed at Juve, perhaps DP never would become the icon he is today. Cool information at least.

Wow...interesting find indeed. Who knows what might have happened to so many different players careers! Another possible hypothesis is Parma wouldnt have undergone such financial troubles if ADP developed into the same player we saw in his prime as they would have been more successful.
Funny how little things can make a massive difference!

Great performance against Lazio. Beside his brace, was it just me to see how he was confident in taking on defenders? Lately he used to just pass the ball back, but against Lazio he did actually tried to beat them.

The problem isn't that DP is not good anymore or that he's suddenly lost his talent...the problem is that he's inconsistent and can't play the full 90 minutes at International level especially at a Euro tournament.
DP can amaze you one game and show glimps of his past, then the next 2 games really piss you off

You gotta be smart like Raneri. He benches ADP for couple of games and then unleashes him when he is hungry for goals and success.
ADP doesn't have 90 mins for 3 games in a week, but he can give you 1 excellent 90 minutes in a week.

imo I think he needs more chances as well. I mean at the wc2002 he came on and scored asap against mexico. I mean if he started maybe Italy woulda won and avoided Korea. and it has been a long time since he played as a striker for Italy, wheres he put, left wing? Imagine, him and toni, i think toni would score so much more, and DP proves he gets a shot, he will finish, mexico in 02, Germany 06 and Lazio, that goal he ran in.
But this is really his last International tournament, and so I think he shouldnt demand playing up top and just go with it
sorry I am all over with this

Alex is playing a great season. He's making something fantastic at his age. 13 goals (+3 in the cup) and somthing like 7 assists. He's always the one who create the dangers for the Juventus. I can't imagine what would be the Juventus rank at this time, without him.

Donadoni plays with 3 strikers two that can play at wide positions and only one who can play in the center, so he need to take 5 strikers in addition to Camoranesi, so I'm sure he will take Di Natale, Quagligoal and Toni so he will had 2 places more he have to take someone in case Toni has problem and the ideal ones are Lucarelli and Toni and the other striker would be one of Cassano and Del Piero.

Lucarelli? No way, he's the epitome of mediocre. Iaquinta or Borriello are much better "understudies" to Toni. I would choose Iaquinta because of his international experience and reliability, despite limited playing time this season.
Il Giornale said it best- "Del Piero should be the alternative to Di Natale. The sense is this: the question of tactics can not prevail when it comes to the importance of the players"

that phrase works for juve not for national team..although i am a huge fan of ADP, his performances are never been that prime where he used to produce in the club level.
The main reason may the fact that the squd lineup may not be the same for juve and Italy.
In juve he is the key striker...But, coming to the azzurri, there are a lot of good strikers in the squad...if he doesn`t perform in a single match, he gets replaced by another striker in the next one..
also, the main reason has to be the difference between league and a national championship.
there will not be any pressure in the league matches.if didn`t score in one match, there are still 37 matches still to play for.but where as in cups, it`s a do or die situation...he gotta score in each and every single match.
also the competition between he and toti...for the supporting striker slot...awesome team sqaudra azzurriii
Juve.
Apr 18 2008, 09:44 AM
Given the fact that Totti is out of NT frame, Iaquinta's injury 'till mid May, and self destroyed Cassano, and ADP's recent form, Donadoni has to choose him as a supporting striker. Here is who I would take:
Toni, Borrielo, Di Natale, ADP, and one of Iaquinta (if he gains his form) or Quagliarela (although he has been inconsistent lately), or Palla (if he keeps up playing time). Really G. Rossi should have been given time in the friendlies in order to bring him in to Euro 08.
Valencianista
Apr 20 2008, 08:46 AM

He's on fire, just scored a brace in the first half against Atalanta, there's no way Donadoni can keep on ignoring him when he's in this kind of form. The partnership he forms with Trezeguet can easily be replicated with Toni using the logic that Trezeguet is a similar player. No disrespect but it'll be ridiculous to have Quaglierela or/and Boriello in Azzurri ahead of Del Piero. I hope that he can score another one or two during this game and really stick it to Donadoni. Although Del Piero is veteran he's still young enough to consider that he'll have quite a few more good years in him.
Edit:
After missing several chances it's finally there, a Del Piero hatrick.
Juve.

He got a hat-trick. Donadoni is an idiot if he doesn't pick him.
