T H E S A I N T - E T I E N N E T H R E A D

I decided to start this thread because this is my favourite team in France. I saw a Saint-Etienne match back in 2004 when I visited Lyon and liked them ever since. So, that being said, discuss the mighty green boys in this thread. All news, scores, pics, vids and discussions go here. There were also a few players from my own nation (the former Yugoslavia) who left a mark in ASSE: Ivan Ćurković and Vladimir Durković

Nice thread, Gino.

Sainté are doing alright this season, they're 6th in the league at the moment, but I think they have the potential to do a lot better. They didn't acquire all that many players over the summer, but the team is stronger than last season, IMO. They've been able to win a few crucial games, but they've also been conceding a lot and suffering a few losses and draws here and there. Against Lorient, for instance, ASSE could have easily won the game, they were the superior team throughout the entire game, but they just couldn't find the back of the net despite having a few chances.

They also suffered a few harsh defeats recently, such as losing 3-2 against boths Lens and Le Mans, teams that I consider inferior to St-Etienne (in terms of quality, at least), so if they want to finish in the top 5, or even higher up, they really need to drop silly points. Also, even though they have been scoring quite a bit, with Gomis doing better than I expected, they should probably get a striker during the mercato as their GF is not all that high, especially in comparison to teams in the top 4.

Also, I must admit, Janot is one of my favorite players in L1, he is such a classy guy. smile.gif

How Freddy Guarin doing? He was always a great buy on Football Manager, and just wanted to know hoe he is doing in real life.

He's only played like 5 games this season, and only two of them were as a starter, primarily because he was injured for a while. He came back form injury a few days ago, so he was included in the group against Metz, but he didn't play.

He's a great player though, so hopefully he won't be hindered with more injuries this season.

I agree with everything you said, Domina. Our away record has definitely got to change, it is one of the worst in Ligue 1..Our home record however is quite good, I think we are 4th or 5th..

Yup, your home record is pretty good, you're 4th in the league after having accumulated 20 points at home. ASNL is first with 23 points and Lyon is second with 22 points.

Like you said though, your away record has to improve, you're 18th in the league.

Their defence is pretty bad. They can never hold a lead lol. But i really think Landrin and Perrin are 2 quality players.

Yeah, that's so true. They started off the season with a few wins and then they started piling on a few losses and draws, but it seems as if they're finally back to their beginning of the season form, so they need to sort out their defense during the mercato if they want to end up in a respectable spot by the end of the season.

No argument there..Our back 4 are individually quite good but they just don't work well together. Yes, Landrin and Perrin are quality but dont forget Gomis!

And watch out for Dimitri Payet, a 20 year old striker that ASSE signed over the summer from FC Nantes. I love how he plays, he scored some nice goals for Nantes..

Yep, and they need time to play together good!
Don't forget that 4 of our defenders left that summer : Ilunga-Camara and Hognon, and they were leaders of the team!!
Let them time!
As said Domina, we can do better!

About Payet, he's a good player, but i think that his performance could be better!
He stays on his left wing whereas he should take part of the game, just like Dernis does when he plays!!

And Guarin...WHAT A SHAME!! He doesn't play at all, whereas when he does he's quite brillant!

We don't really understand Roussey'choices :S

And what do you think, guys, of Ilan ?
Domina
Ilan is a pretty good player and you can always count on him to score under pressure. Against Sochaux, if it wasn't for his goal in the last 15-20 minutes, you wouldn't have been able to win the game. Overall, I think he's a pretty special player, but I don't think he's your best striker. I think, especially this season, Gomis has been really impressive and he is a vital part of your attack now.

In general, although it wouldn't hurt to get another striker during the mercato, I think that Sainté needs to worry about sorting our their defense.

By the way, welcome to SP, TheGreenAngels. smile.gif

Lille 3 - 0 ASSE

19' [1 - 0] S. Lichtsteiner
31' [2 - 0] N. Plestan
49' [3 - 0] Y. Cabaye (pen.)

Wow, horrible loss. Lille dominated the game in almost every aspect...I don't know why we are so bad away..

TheGreenAngels
I watched it, was a shame...
The first goal is Janot's fault!!
The second one is Tavlaridis one, and the third one is a BIG fault of Dabo...
They missed the match...
I don't know why!
It's always the same with Sainté! Each year they have the opportunity to win 3 or 4 following games, and they loose, whereas they could approach the lead!
Next week it's gonna be difficul againt Paris which is brillant away, but we're are brillant at home too!
It'll be a GREAT game!

Thanx Domina, i'm glad to be on that forum, very sympathic!

I think that Ilan is a really good player, just like you said, but this season, i think that he is not as good as last year, and i don't really understand why!
Of course, Gomis is a great striker!
Young, fast, powerful, French...(tongue.gif)

Poor performance by Saint Etienne. Seriously 3 mistakes ?

Janot shouldn't have rushed out like that for the first. The second was just a joke, but Gomis really should've tried harder to get the ball before Plestan. It was also Feindouno's fault as well Thegreenangels, he should've just hammered the ball away instead of dribbling away with it.

Lille really needed this win though .
TheGreenAngels
Yep.

I can't understand how Saint-Etienne can be so good at home, and so bad away... :/

Tonight, against Paris, i'll be there.

Hope, we'll win.

PSG surprises St. Etienne

Saint Etienne, France (Sports Network) - Pegguy Luyindula scored in the 51st minute as PSG surprised St. Etienne, 1-0, on Sunday in the French Ligue 1.

Luyindula scored off a header for his third goal in league play this season. PSG (5-7-7) won for just the fifth time, jumping two spots to 16th.

St. Etienne (7-8-4) hit the frame twice and was denied by PSG goalie Mickael Landreau six times. St. Etienne is 11th, 14 points behind first-place Lyon.

Also on Sunday, Toulouse and Rennes tied 0-0 and the match between Lille and Lens was postponed.

man, we played pretty good in the first half. we had them on their backfoot, but we let up and they scored in the second half like always. Another loss. Next up: Auxerre

Hey, I live in England and need to watch the AJA-ASSE match this saturday.

I've got Sky, but it doesn't seem to be on Eurosport - which used to have the right for Coupe de France matches. But I guess they had a joint deal with TF1, but now France 2/3 have got the rights.

So anyway, it's not on Sky, so where could I find the match on the internet?? Will the streaming sites feature this match? Alternatively, would it work if I used a French proxy server to watch the watch online on France 3's website?

Thanks for your help.
Gino7
Sorry buddy, I am a little late on a reply. I didn't find a stream either so whatever. Good game, but gutted that we lost. 3-2 for them.

NEXT MATCH:

VALENCIENNE VS ASSE

So Arsenal has been linked to Blaise Maitudi recently. I was wondering if anyone could give me an opinion on the type of player he is and how much quality he possesses? Thanks in advance.

Few questions for anyone who knows really. I haven't gotten to watch Ligue 1 much this season so first of all, what the hell has happened St. Etienne?

How has Gomis played?
How has Matuidi played?

Surely with players like the above two, aswell as Perrin, Dabo, Ilan they should be doing alot better?

Well first off, they had a very bad start. They've just been in terrible form and couldn't get it together. They had their coach fired and the previous coach of Lyon (Perrin) has been brought in.

Gomis has scored 2 goals... and he is their top scorer. That about sums up their inability to score at all. They're having trouble with their offense, despite having Mirallas, Payet, Gomis, Matsui and Perrin. Mirallas and Payet haven't stepped up their game to fulfill their potential. The frontline is a bit young imo, to be expected to carry this team. Mirallas and Payet haven't been doing as well as they were projected, or people expected i suppose. I can't say much on Matuidi as i only watched one full game...

They are doing quite well in the uefa cup group stage though.

Mirallas looked quality every time I saw him playing for Lille.

That's the problem. He was quality at Lille and ASSE thought they did great when they got him to transfer over, but he hasn't repeated that same quality nor raised his game. In a struggling team nonetheless, it will be hard for mirallas to demonstrate he's got what it takes.

He has moments of brilliance but it doesn't translate into results.

it depends really. perrin just got his first win as coach since taking over from roussey. they've definitely got quality players but they just need to pull it together.

A decent article on their recent 2-1 win over nancy. It talks about Matsui who they bought from le mans expecting him to repeat the same form he showed, which unfortunately he wasn't able to until now.
QUOTE

Saint-Etienne’s Japanese international Daisuke Matsui was the form man for Les Verts as they ended a seven-game losing streak away to Nancy in Week 16. The former Le Mans winger finally lived up to his pre-season billing as one of the players to watch this season...

Guile, speed, skill and a world-class left-foot

Guile, speed, skill and a world-class left-foot. Saint-Etienne fans finally got to see the best of Daisuke Matsui in last Sunday's 2-1 win over Nancy that lifted Les Verts off the bottom of the Ligue 1 table and up to 17th.

The Japan international (13 caps, one goal) produced his best performance in a green shirt to date, lively throughout his 88 minutes on the pitch, regularly switching flanks, Matsui was a permanent threat to Nancy's rearguard. The 27-year-old, who signed from Le Mans on a free transfer last summer, just missed out on the goal that would have capped his fine individual performance when he shot wide of Damien Grégorini's goal before being substituted to a deserved ovation from the travelling supporters at the Stade Marcel-Picot.

Matsui's performance suggests that he has finally turned the corner after a difficult initiation to life at France's most successful club and, just like his club, has perhaps laid the foundations for better things to come.

A fast learner

Matsui arrived in France in 2004 after five seasons at Kyoto Purple Sanga in his homeland, turning down Grenoble and Lazio to join up with Frédéric Hantz's Le Mans in the French second division. It was to prove a rude introduction to European football:

"I chose Le Mans over Grenoble in France because they had more recent Ligue 1 experience and I didn't want to go to Italy because the football there is too defensive – I don't like it," he said. "I had a pretty negative impression of France, too though. I'd played several times here with Japan youth teams and also spent one month training with PSG when I was 15. I also came with Japan to the 2003 Confederations Cup. But Le Mans changed my opinion even if the football took getting used to.

"My very first ball, in my very first match with Le Mans, I got tackled from behind," said the Japanese star. "Every challenge in Ligue 2 was really tough and I had to change my playing style to avoid taking so many knocks. The coach told me not to hold onto the ball so much, to play quicker."

A fast learner, Matsui helped Le Mans back to Ligue 1 in his very first season.

Spellbinding goals

His Ligue 1 apprenticeship was to prove just as successful. His first-ever L1 goal in Week 12 of the 2005-06 season was the stuff of dreams. A stunning left-footed volley from the edge of the area, which left Strasbourg 'keeper Stéphane Cassard spellbound as the ball flew into the far right top corner.

Yet it was last season that Matsui produced his most consistent and eye catching campaign, playing in 35 matches and scoring five goals, as Les Manceaux earned their highest ever Ligue 1 position of 9th. In the 31st minute of Le Mans Week 5 game away to Monaco at the Stade Louis II, Matsui scored one of the goals of the season. After single-handedly launching an 80m counterattack, Matsui fed the play right before steaming into the penalty area to meet the return ball and scoring with a bewildering flying backheel.

thumbsup.gif St. Etienne pulled off a crucial win against Le Havre to pull themselves out of the relegation zone.

Matsui had a particularly good game and helped ASSE score the goals. He's finally replicating some of his form that he showed at le mans.
QUOTE
Japan international Daisuke Matsui notched a fine performance in Saint-Etienne’s 2-0 win over Le Havre, playing an important role in a large part of Les Verts’ attacking play on Saturday night.
The attacking midfielder is enjoying a return to form under new coach Alain Perrin and against Le Havre showed the kind of form that prompted Saint-Etienne to sign him from Le Mans during the summer.

Matsui shone particularly in the first half, his movement causing the Le Havre defence all sorts of problems, linking well creating several scoring chances, notably in the 17th minute when he forced a fine save from Le Havre 'keeper Christophe Revault with a first-time shot after being released by David Gigliotti.

Minutes later Matsui was at it again, winning the ball on the edge of the area but shooting powerfully over the bar.

Although quieter in the second half, Matsui continued to pressure the visiting defence and was instrumental in the Saint-Etienne's opener.

Released down the right flank, the Japan international drew his defender in before neatly back-heeling for Belgian international Kévin Mirallas to cross to the far post where Dimitri Payet pounced to set Saint-Etienne up for their second consecutive league win.
K
Very happy to see that Matsui is starting to show his class for Les Verts specool.gif

I was getting a bit worried because he couldn't strut his stuff whenever he got playing time under the former manager, but now that he's been given a better opportunity by Perrin, he seems to be getting into a bit of a groove at St Etienne. He's a player that I think very highly of, and hopefully this is just the beginning of a very good spell for him smile.gif

At least ASSE are out of the relegation zone! tongue.gif They can definitely still save their season and finish in a respectable position if they continue their form. I am glad that Gomis is starting to get the goals but i wonder what will happen when he's gone?

Do you know who ASSE will replace Gomis with if he is sold the coming summer?
