There's Only One United
We seem to be having some rotten luck at the moment so may as well use this thread to keep track of our injured players and the progress they are making. Burns is listed as 4-6 weeks which is the most recent addition to the list and it may rule him out of the finals if we make it. Agostino also didn't pull up to well so hopefully he'll be fine for friday though.

Couldn't believe this when I heard the news. We've had such rotten luck with injuries this year and then Ago who is just finally back and in form gets injured at the key point in the season. Lucky for us we have Djite back so he'll be starting against Sydney now but this is a pretty big blow along with Susak who is out for about 3 weeks now. That was always the risk with signing Agostino though as he is a bit injury prone so while I'm not surprised at all I'm pretty upset by it. Hopefully the players we have left can somehow take us all the ways to the finals and then from there anything can happen and we'll get some players like Burns back but it this rate it's going to be a mighty battle.

Ago Out For 4 weeks

ADELAIDE United's marquee signing, Paul Agostino, will miss the rest of the A-League premiership because of injury.

The Reds striker has torn a thigh muscle and will be sidelined for four weeks.

The loss of Agostino, who has scored four goals in his past three games, compounds Adelaide's injury woes with fellow goalscorer Nathan Burns also to miss the remainder of the minor rounds.

Burns, who has a torn hamstring, hopes to be fit for the finals should the Reds cling onto their current fourth position.

Agostino, 32, was injured during Adelaide's training on Tuesday, and scans have revealed a torn quadricep tendon.

"It's devastating for him and another challenge for the club," coach Aurelio Vidmar said.

"It's just a shocking setback but we just have to keep moving forward, keep our heads up and try to secure wins in the last four games."

Agostino returned to his home town of Adelaide this season, lured from German club TSV 1860 Munich.

His return has been riddled with injury, starting just seven times in Adelaide's 17 matches this season.

And another one is out for the rest of the season sad.gif

We barely have enough fit players to have a full bench at the moment and you do have to wonder if it is indeed to do with the training methods that have been used this year as you can't say that the A-League season is that physically demanding when you look at other leagues playing 4 games in 7 days. On the eve of the season defining clash against Sydney as well, what poor timing.

ADELAIDE United midfielder Shaun Ontong has joined the growing number of players who will watch the remainder of the season from the sidelines because of an ankle injury.

Ontong, 20, tore ligaments in his right ankle at training on Saturday forcing the pocket-rocket to use crutches for at least a week. At this stage the prognosis is dire, with doctors recommending he miss six to eight weeks. He will have more information once he attends a physio session on Monday.

Prolonged injuries have plagued the Reds all year, with skipper Paul Agostino (thigh) and defender Michael Valkanis (knee) definitely out for the season. There is still a cloud of doubt over young midfielder Jason Spagnuolo (thigh) and Brazilian import Diego (back and groin) about whether they will return before play-offs or not.

A swag of additional players have also come in and out of the side as a result of injury including key strikers Nathan Burns (hamstring) and Bruce Djite (ankle).

Ontong's injury has dealt a critical blow to the club with only four games left until the end of season.

He said the timing is "disappointing" but remained optimistic about his return next season.

"It's not the best at such an important part of the season," he said. "Especially when I had started being included in the squad a lot more. . . but that's football, it happens."

He is currently wearing a "moon boot" to protect his ankle from further injury. His next goal is to be ready for the Asian Champions League which starts on March 12.

"Hopefully rehab will make it stronger than ever before.

"I'll be working just as hard as always."

Not a regular starter for the side, Ontong's absence will leave fellow midfielders Travis Dodd, Jonas Salley and Lucas Pantelis with fewer rotation options.

Ontong knocked back the idea that the Reds players were being worked too hard leading to this string of set-backs, putting it down to a coincidence.

"We're just unlucky," he said with a laugh.

"We work really hard at training and have done a lot of injury prevention work with our strength and conditioning coach."

And there goes another one. When you look at it the nature of it sounds quite serious and I'm not sure how it occured but the bottom line is he won't likely play again this season. Looks like we'll have to sign one or 2 players on short term deals as Cassio and Cornflakes are both suspended this week and we'll struggle to have a full bench otherwise. Everything seems to be going wrong at the moment sad.gif

Sarkies adds to Adelaide woes
December 29, 2007

ADELAIDE United's faltering A-League season is quickly going from bad to worse with Olyroo Kristian Sarkies hospitalised and coach Aurelio Vidmar possibly finding himself in hot water with league officials.

Upset with some of the refereeing decisions in the 3-1 loss to Sydney FC at Adelaide Oval, Vidmar claimed referee Matthew Breeze should have been awarded "man of the match" honours - comments likely to come under scrutiny by Football Federation Australia.

"I thought he was man of the match, in my opinion," Vidmar said.

"Some of the decisions that he made were quite mind boggling for mine."

Already without Olyroos star Nathan Burns and club skipper Michael Valkanis for the rest of the season, the Reds injury woes deepened further with Sarkies likely to join the long-term casualty list after being hospitalized with a blood clot.

"His main artery under his arm, there is a blood clot there and so he is in hospital this morning," Vidmar said.

Adelaide will also be without Robert Cornthwaite the against Newcastle after the defender was sent off in the Sydney loss, with Brazilian star Cassio also set to serve a one-match suspension after receiving a fourth yellow card for the season.

The loss has the fifth-placed Reds facing the prospect of missing the final series for the first time in the A-League.

Depending on results, they could be four points adrift of the top four by the end of the weekend with three rounds to play.

Cassio ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee playing against local side MetroStars the other night and will be sidelined for at least nine months sad.gif

Apparently he suffered the same injury in Brazil about 5 years ago. Therefore he is out of our remaining Champions League games as well as the start of the A-League season. He's been a regular at left back and quite consistent which so he'll be missed. Valkanis is back soon so at least we'll be getting a defender back but it's still not like for like in terms of his position.

Agostino has been diagnosed with a minor case of chicken pox as well. Almosted choked on my breakfast when I found this out as he's had a lot of problems so going by that logic I probably shouldn't have been so surprised. He'll miss the big clash against Pohang coming up but should be available for our final vital trip away to China.
There's Only One United
Sounds a bit dodgy that Cassio was supposed to be out for 9 months and miss most of the season and suddenly he goes back to Brazil and they say he'll be fine in 40 days and ready at the start of the season. Thought we're supposed to have the sport medical experts in Australia but I'm well pleased none the less. We're actually having luck with an injury for once.

QUOTE
ADELAIDE United's passion for Brazilians continues to flourish with a four-man Samba invasion next season.

Brazilians are expected to dominate and complete Adelaide's foreign roster after a Cassio "miracle" in Brazil.

Brazil national team doctor Jose Luis Runco cleared Cassio of major knee ligament damage in Rio de Janeiro.

Cassio said he expects to front for Adelaide United's pre-season regime next month with three other Brazilians.

Adelaide yesterday confirmed the signing of Brazilian right-back Alameo in a two-year deal while Willem II striker Cristiano is set to agree to preliminary terms tonight.

He was expected to be out of action for at least nine months but Dr Runco said Cassio should be fit to resume full duties in 40 days.
