Just thought this might be a good thread to check upon other players that play somewhere else but have been in the milan lineup in the years past. Hows Sheva doing? Heard he was hurt but not much else. I've heard Oliviera is doing great in Spain. Who else?

List of notable former Milan Players:

Martin Laursen - Aston Villa
Ricardo Oliveira - Real Zaragoza (loan)
Marco Borriello - Genoa
Luca Saudati - Empoli
Nicola Pozzi - Empoli (Co-ownership)
Lino Marzoratti - Empoli (Loan....I think)
Manuel Rui Costa worshippy.gif - Benfica
Cristian Abbiatti - Ateltico Madrid (loan)
Andriy Shevchenko - Chelsea
Massimo Donati - Celtic
Pasquale Foggia - Cagliari (loan from Lazio....for now)

isn't rui costa pushing close to 40 now? we paid a lot for him back in the day and he didn't really deliver on it. he is a great guy as far as i know so it's great to see him do well

He's about 35, and in his first two seasons Milan won the CL, Supercup and Coppa Italia, but he was pushed out of the team by the emergence of Kaka. A shame, to see him on the bench as often as he was in the last few seasons at Milan, but he was awesome at Benfica and Fiorentina. Now he's pretty much the only good attacking player Benfica has.

Rui Costa is still a legend. He probably didnt live up to the £26 milion (I think) we paid for him, but he did still provide moments of rare and unbelievable quality. He was alwyas one of my fave Serie A players and the standing ovation he got when Benfica played in the San Siro a few months ago was totally deserved.

Other than the already mentioned ones, we got guys who never really made it like Foggia (in the middle of a crazy Sopranos style controversy in Cagliari while on loan from Lazio) and Borriello (at Genoa still doing decidedly average). There are also some guys with Milan ties like Saudati and Pozzi at Empoli....Pozzi (who we still co own, but will probably let go in the summer) just scored all 4 goals against Genoa over the weekend and Saudati is his regular strike partner who I think we no longer own. Empoli also have young Marzoratti who is on a 2 year loan from us. A guy once seen as the new Baresi in our youths. Dont know how well he is doing though. I know he plays a bit but not every game for the Tuscan Azzuri.

Hmmm....there are bound to be others...will come back with more! Might also update the first post as a sorta definitive list rather than having to read through every post for a new player!
Pandev - King of Macedonia
Borriello has improved since moving to Genoa and I hope for the young lad's career that Nicola Pozzi stays with Empoli. He'll get more game time there.

Right, I've edited Carl mondays original post so we can catalogue and follow the players listed. So, if anyone names any other players, I, or Carl if he reads it, can edit the original post and add the name....or else we can add a player after they leave our club....so expect Yoann Gourcuffs name to appear there soon! dry.gif

Anyway, surprisingly I forgot Marty Laursen in my first post fish.gif me

Laursen has been one of, if not the, best defenders in the EPL this season. He has had 2 years of horrible injuries for Villa but when he set foot on the pitch, he looked proven quality. He has been fit all season for us and has been an asbolute monster in all bar one match....the first of the season against Liverpool where he was subbed off at half time, CLEARLY suffering from the strains of a virus he had in late pre season.

Massimo Donati has won over the Celtic supporting faithful in no time. He never was going to be good enough for us, but he does look classy for the Hoops to be fair, and does add significantly to their style of play.

Abbiatti has recently stepped into goals for Ateltico and has had an unusual few games...despite conceding a few in his first few games, he actually made a few decent saves and last weekend kept a clean sheet at Recreativo de Huelva.

And lastly, Sheva....well, he has still been massivley disappointing and will probably, if not certianly, go down as the biggest flop in Premiership history. He has recently had to play up top on his own with Didier Drogba out receiving surgery and will require 6 weeks rehab before buggering off to the ACN, so Sheva will have opportunity. The big problem is that Chelseas other outfielders are so used to getting the ball from back to front in no time (basically, hoofing) that it doesnt benefit Shevas game. I said it all along that the Chelsea style would kill his game and it looks like I have been proven right. Chelsea dont ball possession and short passing, and Sheva isnt the only player whose career has floundered. Ashley Cole, one time best left back in the world for his attakcing prowess as well as his defensive solidarity, is now a mere blocker and no longer the attacking flair player he once was...thus showing that its not all Shevas fault for flopping. He played at the weekend against Arsenal, and frankly, had NOTHING, but an absolute lack of service hardly helped his cause!
dreamlander
Well, Sheva netted last night in the league cup for chelsea against Liverpool. It was the second goal in a 2-0 victory and came just as injury time started. It was a nice strike too...hit with patented power and tehcnique...the keeper arguably could have done better with it, but it was hit so hard and fast, he barely had time to adjust.

Sheva was also involved in the opening goal, holding the ball up for Lampard to run onto. Shevchenko actually looked pretty lively overall to be fair. He was making great runs and his touch looked good. See if this is the kick start performance he needed!

Whats up with the case with Foggia. I know hes from Milan originally but didnt Lazio buy out his contract and now have loaned him out to Cagliari...
dreamlander
He was in our youths, we loaned him to Ascoli, he did pretty well, we included him in the transfer for Oddo (I think!) but either way he isnt a Milan player and is owned by Lazio now. He had a spell there where he was used as a winger and he didnt really fit in. So since he has been loaned to Cagliari where things have all gone a bit mad!

the lad is a Napoli native and is apparently craving a move back to Naples....that would be kinda tough for him thoug considering they already have Hamsyk playing in that position and Lavezzi also drops deep from his striking role...so I cant make out if he is needed or wanted there!
dreamlander
Word got to me today via the TV that former Fiorentina and Milan legend, Manuel Rui Costa, is going to reitre at the end of the season. This guy is one of the greats of European football. Will always remember him for his passing and dribbling style and the crazy partnership he had with Gabriel Batistuta!

Holy Crap man....Holy frickin crap!!!!

Yeah i know, he's been on fire this year

i have been wondering for a while but does anyone know how Leandro Grimi is going this season? We bought him last season to provide cover at left back before loaning him out to Siena. Has anyone seen him play and is he a first team player there?

Sorry but thats all i can think of when i hear that name. I was in Italy when he moved to Milan, and for like, 3 days straight, he was the main deal being talked about.

'Next Sorin', replacement for Paolo....Iv watched him a couple time for Milan and once for Siena, hes nothing to get excited about.
dreamlander
Hah...Grimi, I forgot about him! No idea if he is playing for Siena even.

On the former Milan players front, Martin Laursen has been rewarded for what has so far been an astonishing season for Aston Villa with a contract extension. He has arguably been one of the top center backs in Europe this season, he really has been incredible and has 6 goals from center back as well!
dreamlander
Borriello....15 goals in one season.....worse than Gilardino and less reliable than Ronaldo though apparently! dry.gif

Kinda let this thread slip away a bit...as I have with certian other spects of this sub forum that I hope to get back in shape....my apologies.

Anyway, I wandered into the Benfica forum and forgot I had posted in a thread in there of great relevance to anyone who truly feels attached to AC Milan. The great Manuel Rui Costa played his last game for Benfica last week and was applauded off the pitch by a standing ovation. Truly one of the greats of the Serie A and of European football of my time anyway. There are very very few people who will go down as a clublegend in no less than 3 clubs, and this guy will, make no mistake about it, be regarded as a Benfica, Fiorentina and AC Milan legend.

He is also a symbol of when Serie A, or any other footballing league, was at its absolute peak when he was in his late Viola years and on the verge of coming to the San Siro. That was a time when no league could, or ever has IMO, compared to Italian football. Rui Costa is now going to go on and become a Sporting Director of Benfica if i am not mistaken.

Berlusconi and Galliani also made sure he recieved a personal letter on their behalf on the build up to his final day as a professional football player.
Vamp
I remember Rui since he joined Milan. He was at his peak and an exceptional player.
Thanks to Rui for whatever he has done for us and the game itself.

In the NT, I still cant believe how he stuck that shot against England in the Euro 2004...simply amazing.
Don Sweey
Grimi has been on loan at Sporting since January and says he doesn't want to come back. May I kindly suggest he f**s off then as he isn't exactly brilliant.

Ya man. That goal is something else. Just hit like an absolute rocket. Its in every single Rui Compilation I watch. If you go to the Benfica forum and the farewell Rui thread, there are 2 awesome compilations of him

Are we allowed to type fuck? If so, fucking excellent....as long as I don't do it too much I'm assuming. Why we signed Grimi I'll never know. Argentine fans were quite frank about the fact we'd signed the wrong player if we were going to get anyone from the recently finished championship back then.

I'm pretty lenient with swearing once your not calling someone names its all good by me! With the exception of the "C-Bomb" that one isnt appreciated around here (Shame...cause I love using it! sad.gif)

Anyway, on topic, Grimi, I only saw one clip of him online like. And you know with a South american player, if you struggle to find footage of him online, he probably is pretty bad. And sure enough, thats the way she went down!

Gilardino with a very sexy finish against Genoa.
Vamp
Gila is showing signs of his pre Milan time. I have a feeling he will become once again a very good forward under Prandelli.
kawandinho
Gila is playing well, some players are just not cut out for Big Clubs.
dreamlander
Fiorentina play more to his style with wingers and more striker support. We played with too many deep lying central players and that isnt how Gila works best. It was a system thing in my opinion. saying that, if we were to change the system to suit Gila, I cant think of any way we could have worked both Kaka and Pirlo into the side at the same time either, so its not a managerial criticism really.
Carl_Monday
It's a Gilardino criticism, very well done Alan.

Seems Gullit will be playing a new role with the club.
adriano.
i'm actually pleased with this. we raised the topic a while ago that we were never linked with young european talent unless we had played against them, and we only heard of south americans. At least now we have someone whose job it is to look out for some players from europe. It opens up a whole range of options that we haven't had of late.

i would like a few more, maybe one for eastern europe and one for africa.
