Only one big trade to talk about this off-season (Cabrera and D-Train to Detroit), along with a handful of signings (Hunter to Anaheim, another mega-contract for A-Rod, etc). We'll surely see more activity in the coming months.

btw, coming to American ballparks near you: Kosuke Fukudome. thumbsup.gif
John Flushing
Before I clicked on the link, I thought that Kosuke Fukudome was the name of a baseball stadium in North America, which demonstrates how little I actually know about the sport.
K
So the Mitchell report. It was pretty much the only sports headline in the States today. In a nutshell, a large group of current and former players were named in the report, including stars, MVP's, and potential Hall of Famers:

Barry Bonds (obviously) rolleyes.gif
Roger Clemens
Andy Pettitte
Miguel Tejada
Gary Sheffield
Jason Giambi
Rafael Palmeiro
Kevin Brown
Jose Canseco (another obvious name)

(The entire list of players mentioned)

At the end of the day, the only major impact this news seemingly has is that MLB as an organization is tarnished -- not to mention the legacies of the players involved. There won't be any punishments, and Bud Selig will only go back to sounding tough about eradicating performance-enhancing drugs from the sport. Never mind that the MLB doesn't even hold tests for HGH yet...

I kinda saw the Clemens thing coming, though. I mean, he was basically 43 going on 23. Even Randy Johnson slowed down as age caught up with him; that definitely wasn't the case with the Rocket.

Opening Day next season will have a weird feel to it, that's for sure.
Carl_Monday
funny how there are no red sox players on it....hmmmm

So much for America's past time.

Lost in the Mitchell Report turmoil were the big-money signings made by various teams.

A-Rod re-upped with the Yankees in a 10-year, $275 million deal -- ensuring that he'll have up to 10 opportunities to prove himself as a clutch player. laugh.gif

Kosuke Fukudome signed with the Cubs for 4 years and $48 million, while the Dodgers signed pitcher Hiroki Kuroda for 3 years and about $35 million. Admittedly, I hardly know anything about Kuroda, since he pitched for the Hiroshima Carp (one of the perennial doormats of the Central League). I'm sure there are other Japanese players who have crossed the Pacific in the last few days, but I can't be arsed to look them up atm.

Here's hoping the Mariners actually make a signing or a trade -- preferably for a competent starting pitcher.

Hello
Today Mets trades from Twins J.Santana - one of the best SP in the league.
In NL East are Phillies , Braves and Mets. Rollins vs. Santana smile.gif

My english is not OK , becouse i'm from central-east Europe

My favorite team is Tigers and Twins.

In my opinion World Series in this season win Tigers , why ?? becouse traded from Atlanta E.Renteria , from Florida Carbrera and Willis [2007 season is very bad - dangerous statistics] and they have Granderson , Polanco , Ordonez and Sheffield and more players.

K
$150 million contract for Santana eyepopping.gif

All but makes the Mets the favorite in the NL East, and perhaps all of the National League... but they better hope his arm doesn't blow off anytime soon, a la Mike Hampton.

I'm surprised the Twins took this deal, to be honest. The other deals that were offered to him (by both the Yanks and the Sawx) seemed to be better what the Mets had come up with. I suppose it's rebuilding time in Minnesota.

I'm hoping that the M's can wrap up the trade for Erik Bedard soon. With Safeco Field being a pitcher's park, he could stand to improve his numbers even further. Of course, he and King Felix could form quite a duo at the top of our rotation. Will it be enough to get us into the playoffs? Maybe as a wild card; the Angels have made a few big moves of their own and honestly, they're probably the favorites to win the AL West at this stage.

The off-season isn't over yet, so we could potentially see other trades and signings being made. cheers1.gif

In my opinion Mets it's not favorite in the NL East , becouse Phiilies is very dangerous team , Atlanta have very good and old roster [Glavine playing @ Mets in 2007 and he have 300 wins].
Look at end 2007 season [2-3 lat matches , Mets lost and Phillies play in NLDS]

Rollins have over 20 SB and over 20 triples [Granderson too] and a lots of Homeruns. Howard have over 50 HR in 2007 and he's #1 in HR in 2006.

SF buy Rowand , but he not help SF in NL West [Zito in 2007 - bad reasults , Rowand is propably in 2008].

Arizona buy Haren , In Dodgers new manager [13 years in NYY] , Colorado lost in World Series , San Diego - they have good starters

When Mariners buy Bedard , Tampa Bay is fourth in AL East.

I'm eager to see how Houston does this season. They added three players for Astro fans to watch, Tejada, Erstad, and Abercrombie.

Besides supporting AC Milan while complaining about how much the Sox spend... I'm still not clear on what your favorite baseball team is, Carl Monday. I'd posed the question to you before SP crashed and never got your answer. I'm seriously curious. (I'm also curious about which NBA team you support since you've posted in that forum too.)

My money's on Clemens. Pettite has admitted his own use and signed a deposition confirming Clemens' use. Clemens just doesn't seem genuine to me from what I've seen of his testimony. Too bad. The man is still a legend though and accomplished amazing things before the years he allegedly used the drugs.

The real pity is that there are so many kids and young players who look up to these guys as role models and now that's been tarnished by this.

He's already turned into a bit of a villain for Cubs fans, hasn't he? You'd think he'd have more pressing matters to get his hands on (i.e. getting the team ready for their 100th straight season without a World Series title) than trying to sell out Wrigley's name...

Spring training is back on again, with the Braves spending a month in Disney trying to get their rhythm back together. The Tampa Bay Rays are also scheduled to play a few games at the Disney complex sometime during the season. Too bad nobody gives a damn laugh.gif

Made the mistake of watching the Sox 2004 dvd the other day and now I can't wait for the season to start. I go through serious Baseball withdrawal in the winter. Thank God the EPL and the MLB off-seasons don't overlap or I'd probably need professional help to get through it.

Got to get a new job so I can afford to get to some games. (I only went once last year.) Would love to get down to Baltimore again in the near future too. A group of us went down a couple years ago. Great stadium. Great city. Excellent place to go for games and a hell of a lot cheaper than going to Fenway these days.

Wow. I've never felt so much derision as a Boston fan. We win the World Series twice in 90 years and suddenly we're the bad guy.

Note: most of us are not like the a-holes in Carl_Monday's links, but like any city we're going to have a certain amount of douchebags and they're the ones that'll make the headlines.

If Celtics were to finish second I'd still be estatic. It's a far cry from recent years. I feel like I'm a kid again and it's the Bird/McHale/Parish days. I personally think the whole league on a whole seems more exciting. But as a Boston fan the Celtics are just so fun to watch.

Pats lost the superbowl. I don't share this with too many of my neighbors: but this is kind of hilarious. I thought it was cool Pats had a perfect season and broke records and all, but American Football is not my favorite and while I was bummed out the day of the Superbowl, in retrospect it cracks me up a little. Anyway, it would have been a little too perfect if they won the superbowl too. What would be the point of watching next season? Something to build on. Heh.

Revolution made it to the MLS Cup (again)... Revolution won the Open Cup. While I was hoping for a double, winning our first piece of silverware was exciting.

Red Sox won the world series. This was not supposed to happen in my lifetime as far as I knew based on the way my father grumbled about them year in and year out. Now it's happened twice. And this time it was as much to do (maybe even more to do) with the young up-through-the-ranks players as the big-money signings.

I hate the Yankees. I can't help it. It's the way I was raised.

I find it interesting that the biggest anti-Boston sentiments (clearly responses to our success and/or our spending) come from posters who list AC Milan and Man Utd as the teams they support respectively. Just an observation.

It's actually kinda surreal to me as a Boston fan, because growing up, we always seemed to have people's sympathy (except for maybe the Celtics during the glory years) but as far as the Red Sox went, other supporters never gave me sh*t except for of course Yankees fans. Now it feels like we are hated by a much broader spectrum. It's a little strange.

Interesting note:

John Henry apparently said he was going to grant Steinbrenner Jr membership to Red Sox Nation. I don't think Junior was amused. If I think of it I'll post the article if I can find it online.
Andres.
Mets started out with a win, I'm happy.

Jon Lester pitched a no-hitter last night. Amazing game. First left-hander to pitch a no-hitter for the Sox since 1956. And Veritek became the first catcher in MLB history to catch four career no-hitters. Big night.

If these young guys can find consistency and put in a decent amount of the performances they've shown they have in them, they will be a force to be reckoned with. Masterson is set to pitch tonight and Bertolo Colon (who they were prepping in spring training for being a possible regular starter) is schedule to pitch tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

CARACAS (Reuters) - Former Major League Baseball player Geremi Gonzalez was struck by lightning and killed over the weekend at a lake in his native Venezuela, authorities said on Monday.

Gonzalez, 33, a pitcher who was signed to Japan's Yomiuri Giants in 2007, had previously played for the Chicago Cubs, the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox, the New York Mets and the Milwaukee Brewers.

There were conflicting versions of what Gonzalez was doing at the time of his death on Sunday, but local emergency services told Reuters he was playing with a motorized water-bike when the lightning struck at Lake Maracaibo in his home state of Zulia in western Venezuela.

Sad news to hear and a bad way to die. RIP Gonzalez...

It's about damn time:

Mariners fire general manager Bill Bavasi

QUOTE
The Seattle Mariners fired general manager Bill Bavasi on Monday, as the team lags with the worst record in baseball after starting the season with playoff hopes.

Vice president/associate general manager Lee Pelekoudas will take over in his place.

"Change is in order," Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln said in a release. "We have determined new leadership is needed in the GM position. With a new leader will come a new plan and a new approach. A search will begin immediately for a permanent GM, and Lee will be a candidate for the position."

Bavasi was in his fifth season as Seattle's GM, only once turning out a club that finished with a winning record. That was last year when Seattle won a surprising 88 games, and was in contention for a playoff spot into September.

That performance, and the offseason acquisitions of pitchers Erik Bedard and Carlos Silva, caused many to believe the Mariners could overtake the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West this season.

But 2008 has been nothing but underachievement from the start. Despite being armed with a $117 million payroll, the Mariners entered Monday night with a 24-45 record. Only one other time in franchise history had the Mariners fallen 20 games under .500 sooner, and they are on pace for a team-record 106 losses.

Where do I even begin with this clown? Between all the promising players and prospects we shipped away, all the key trades that backfired on us, a managerial change that occurred under murky circumstances, and most of all, the number of disastrous free agent signings that he made, I'm amazed that he was allowed to stay on for such a long period of time.

This season has been an utter disaster for the club, and Bavasi continuing to make blunders just compounded all our problems.

Adrian Beltre, Richie Sexson, Jeff Weaver, Jarrod Washburn, Brad Wilkerson, Miguel Batista, Kenji Johjima (to whom Bavasi actually gave a contract extension in April ohmy.gif ). Names like that pretty much explain why he had to go.

Good fucking riddance.

There goes the other half of the Chuckle Brothers:

MLB-worst M's fire manager McLaren

QUOTE
SEATTLE (AP) - John McLaren was fired Thursday as manager of the Seattle Mariners, who began the season with playoff aspirations and now have the worst record in the major leagues.

Bench coach Jim Riggleman will run the Mariners for the rest of their season, beginning Friday night in Atlanta.

The Mariners made the announcement before the team left on its road trip and three days after general manager Bill Bavasi was fired. McLaren was the second manager in the majors to be fired this season — the New York Mets dismissed Willie Randolph this week.

Seattle is 25-47 and 17 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West.

"John worked extremely hard, but our team continued to underperform compared to our expectations of them," interim general manager Lee Pelekoudas said in a statement. "With 90 games left on our schedule, we owe it to ourselves and our fans to do everything we can to win as many games as possible."

McLaren was an assistant for 21 1/2 years in the majors before he took over as Seattle's manager last July when Mike Hargrove abruptly quit. McLaren went 68-88 in less than a full season on the job.

This season, the revamped Mariners expected to reach their first postseason since 2001. Instead, they are on pace to become the first team to lose 100 games with a $100 million player payroll.

"As we move towards the trade deadline and decisions have to be made on the futures of the players on our ballclub, I wanted to see if a different voice could make a difference in their performance," Pelekoudas said.

Josh Hamilton's 28 home runs in the first round of the home run derby tonight was something magical (and historic).

First pick in the 1999 draft. Career derailed by alcohol and drug problems. Completely turned it around this year.

He ended up second in the derby to Morneau from Minnesota Twins.
