Jones sentenced to six months in prison

WHITE PLAINS, New York (AP) - Marion Jones was sentenced Friday to six months in prison for lying about using steroids and a check-fraud scam, despite her plea that she not be separated from her two young children "even for a short period of time."

"I ask you to be as merciful as a human being can be," she said.

Last October, Jones admitted she lied to a federal investigators in November 2003 when she denied using performance-enhancing drugs. She said she took a designer steroid "several times before the Sydney Olympics and continued using it after."

The sentence completes a stunning fall for the woman who was once the most celebrated female athlete in the world. She won three gold and two bronze medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

An incredible demise, to be sure, but it hardly seems surprising now. I remember her face being plastered all over the Wheaties cereal boxes and a series of ads inside of magazines and even on TV; now that the courts have spoken, losing out on these sponsors and even Olympic medals are the least of her concerns.

And what is it with all these high-profile U.S. athletes being sent to prison nowadays? This wasn't even the most stunning fall from grace for an athlete in the last three months (see Vick, Michael). Bonds and Clemens must beware...

Didn't Barry Bonds already get sent to jail several months ago?

He was just turning himself into authorities, I think. His personal trainer/supposed 'roid supplier did spend some time behind bars because of him, though.

The US media is a joke. Running Bonds through the coals before any evidence came out about steroids and not giving even 20% of the attention to Clemens. horrible

Woah. I remember when Marion Jones was this massive athlete, I remember the Olympics where she did so well and thinking she was massive and powerful beyond belief.

That is horrible news. I am not one to support drug enhancements, but it sucks that she gets jail time for that. Although it does make sense, because she cost some other people their glory.

But still.. ouch. Really sad news. I thought she was a great athlete.

But how much time will she actually serve.... she got off easy! The world wants to fry Bonds but the media has already forgave clemens!

Marion Jones isn't going to jail because she cheated, but because she lied about it to authorities. There's a significant difference between the two.

So, had she cheated and told the authorities, she would have not been punished but because she kept it from the authorities she's being punished? lol, in both cases it's wrong. There isn't much of a difference. Doing something wrong is wrong.

She's going to jail because she lied to the federal investigation on the BALCO labs, not because she lied to some drug testing agency. How are you not getting this?

Yeah I want to say his last name was Hunter. Then she started dating a sprinter and had his baby. Good to see action being taken against doping, and no excuse for lying to authorities.
Aurelian
She committed perjury and was involved in a counterfeiting scam. That's why she's gone down.
