28 sports, 302 events, 10500 athletes.
The outline for this year's edition of the Summer Olympics.

The Games are upon us, the opening ceremony is tomorrow.
Are you watching? What events are you looking forward to? How do you think your country will fare?
Dingo™

I try to catch a bit of the Olympics. The start is a bit boring when its all swimming and sailing and all that but the further it goes with the Athletic events, thats when i usually get a bit more interested. Probably catch the football and the tennis too but the other events like Weightlifting and Archery are enough to put you to sleep.

Anyone watch the opening ceremony ?, apparently it went on a bit, 3 hours i heard, now that would be some snoozefest for me.
The 92nd Fish
I watched it but only because I was hugely hungover, was quite interesting really, the way they organised like 15,000 people and I think I spotted at max 2 mistakes during the whole show.
bluesfan.
Olympics are class, I love it when they come around. I like watching the Gymnastics and stuff like that, as gay as it sounds, because some of the stuff that is shown is truly amazing. Also like the athletics and tennis, but the football is kind of boring. Because the players have to be under 23 they are mostly no name players.

I'll probably catch the Athletics, football, tennis and the finals of the swimming competition. Other sports just don't interest me.

EDIT: Of course I'll watch basketball too.
Andres.
Basketball is the most exciting event for me, in the United States they take it more seriously than they do FIBA for example. Waterpolo and athletics are cool as well. I get enough football watching the european leagues so I dont care too much for Olympic football.
Bel
The US Mens Basketball team is facing off against the Chinese right now. It's 11-9 for China. Normally I'd want the States to win for Kidd, etc, but I'm actually hoping China wins this. They had an opening intro for the game and they showed how much this game meant to Yao, who is an amazing guy tbh. So I'd like China to win.

They're giving the US a run for their money right now. Yao's playing great despite having to overcome an injury not too long ago.

I missed Mexico Vs. Brazil female beach volleyball.

Still not pleased.

laugh.gif I didn't get to finish it either, the coverage cut out. It was evened up when it cut out.

I don't like the coverage so far. They'll take it from one event to another just as you're getting into it.

The score for the mens game is at 24-21 for the States. They got their lead.. but China will bounce back!
Andres.
USA is winning by 13 at the half I believe. I dont think they are going to let it slip. thumbsup.gif

I agree, I hate it when they switch between sports.

USA lead 49 - 37. Wade and James are the best players so far, with 12 and 11 points each.

Thank you

China lost sad.gif

The US won by 30 odd points, but China gave them a good run for a while. It was amazing to see Yao cheer them on like that.. made me want them to win even more. Hopefully they'll win most of their other matches. thumbsup.gif

Anyone know why Steve Nash isn't listed on the Canadian Mens Basketball side? They play China next on the 13th.. I'm not sure why he isn't listed.

Also watched some of the mens sculls - Canada got 2nd in their heat, with Great Britain coming first. Both make it to the next round along with Italy.

As for the womens sculls, China got 1st (they were 30+ feet ahead of 2nd place! ohmy.gif ) and they made it through to the finals.

Anyways, the Olympic medal count so far:

I hate the time difference. dry.gif

damn what an effing race in the swimming relay. 4by100.......frenchies were beating the american by a good half body but the americans came back and edged out the frenchies by a couple nanomiliseconds lol
Scousy
The mens 4x100m relay today was INTENSE. At one point 7 of the teams were under world record time (around the 6th lap mark) and I think 5 teams ended up breaking the record. Eamon Sullivan broke the individual 100m world record in the opening leg too. How that american bloke chased down Bernard (the 100m world record holder coming into the event) was ridiculous. What. A. Race.
Vic.
I watched the Men's 100m Breaststroke. That guy Kitajima is a monster, first man to swim under 59 seconds. ohmy.gif

Did you hear that the French told the newspapers that they would smash the Americans?

haha yeah that's what made it soo harsh for the French, especially Bernard. To add insult to injury, one of the Australians broke Bernard's leg record! Terible day for the frenchies sad.gif

When are we gonna win a gold? Manaudou has been disappointing as well.

I know I'm American but I;m pulling for the French as well tongue.gif
Scousy
Mens 100m freestyle world record broken twice in 5 minutes. These new Speedo swimsuits are unbelievable. Expect the 57s barrier to be broken in the final. So exciting!

EDIT: Phelps wins his tenth gold medal and sets a new world record in the 200m butterfly. He is now the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time.

im watching women's gymnastics.....these chinese women are so small i have no idea how they're aged 16 and up...how is that possible?

Gymnasts are so tiny because gymnastics stunts your growth, because of how strenuous it is. And considering girls in China are 'picked' at around 3-5 years old (or so I think I heard when watching the gymnastics the other day) they are definitely going to suffer from it from the very first day. I'm not at all surprised at how small the Chinese gymnasts are - because on average they're already smaller than the American is on average. It all adds up.

There was one Chinese gymnast who really did not look 16 though. She had the face of a 5 year old, and though I do know some of them have very baby-like faces, this one looked like an infant. And she was the one who fell off the bars...

I'm not typically on the 'larger' country's side, but I didn't feel bad for the French. They should have never said what they said to the press - they should have known it would only serve as extra motivation.

Also, I saw some guy from Togo get the bronze in kayaking today. I love seeing 'smaller' nations get medals, especially when no one expects them to. smile.gif

Chinese people generally look really young. I'm 17 and when I was driving around, someone mistook me for a 12 year old and thought I stole my mums car. Granted, she wasn't the smartest cookie in the jar...

Did anyone catch women's cycling? I find it funny to notice how they drink Coke after their accomplishments. But i guess it's because of all the sugar (and the reason that Coca-Cola Co. is official sponsor of the Olympics).

I dont like the hype surrounding China. i dont really see the hype about it, every summer olympics, its always going to be someone who says its the best opening ceremony ever, its the best this, its the best songs etc..

to be honest, china this olympics is nothing special. the opening ceremony was nothing special, its just like all the others that i have watched all the recent ones are the same standard... the singing was a total disgrace with someone else doing the signing, the footprints is computer generated and faked, one guy got stabbed, so i dont see why everyone even thinks it is going to be the best olympics ever, its decent, but nothing extraordinary as people say it to be.... its nothing special, its just like the past few ones comparibly. but obviously, as time goes on, technology advances, so that is why beijing has the advatnage cause they have the best technology, hence rated the best ever olympics. its like this, compare beijing 2008 to an olympics that was in 1908 or something. its as simple as that, the beijing one is much better, as the 1908 one has really poor technology. then again, when humans compare beijing 2008 to olympics in 2108, beijing 2008 will seem crap cause the technology in 2108 will be WAAAYYY better.

for a population of a few billion, id expect them to come up 2nd or 1st in the medals tally, not really a big big achievment for them to win the oylmpics... its good, so i give them credit if they do.... but as usual, china does well in the gymnastics and weight lifting, like every other olympic games, so i dont see the hype in it. and the sports where china arent good at, like swimming, football and the other sports, china arent "making a big difference" in dominating those games now. if they did, i would respect them alot more. buts its just normal, they are dominating in the gyamnastics and weight lifting, like expected, and performing badly in the sports they perform badly in, like football and basketball.... so no big hype is nessicary.

the hype surrounding the china basketball team is laughable, i cant believe some people where thinking they would do well, and i dont see the big hype in the US-China match. its more of a symbolic value, but quality wise its like arsenal vs derby. apart from yao ming, the china basketball team is rubbish, in short, i already knew US was going to win easily......footballing wise, there was a bit of hype, but like i said, china was overrated in football also massively, in short they arent as good as people make them out to be... thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

Italy's pretty good biggrin.gif We have 11 medals for now..

We "nurture" athletes in the same way that europe nurtures young footballers. If they show promise or talent, or they just want to become a gymnast, we have many programs to help develop their skill.

Otherwise, these girls would not have the chance to be on this great stage because some of them come from poor provinces where the state of their schools and recreation centres is laughable.

The two chinese female divers were aged 16 and about 4'3 laugh.gif

And i also watched the togo kayaker, i think he is the first African to win a medal this olympics happy.gif The canadian kayaker did quite well considering he has NO funding because canada doesn't care about him for some odd reason. (he didn't get to attend training camp etc.)

Yeah that was a dumb move. I still cannot understand how they threw it away, gah that's irritating.

But yeah Boukpeti getting the Bronze in whitewater was fantastic! Shame Lefevre couldn't beat the German to gold sad.gif

I watched the gymnastics as well. Great bronze for the American men having to deal with the Hamms dropping out. And the women, well the Chinese won fair and square. Sacramone pretty much destroyed any chances of landing the gold. Hopefully they can do better in the all-arounds.

And Phelps, well the guy's just a complete monster. There's no stopping him lol.

UPDATE: Damn howabaout that? Trickett getting a huge break in the 200m freestyle semis with that Chinese who was disqualified.
Bel
Brown was so close to finally getting Canada a medal. I'm really disappointed by that. He was a few milliseconds from 3rd place.

I'm really tired of seeing the same old countries win again and again. Come on, it just isn't fun anymore.

Australian Women with probably the upset of the event so far in the 4x200m freestyle relay. Absolutely smoked it from lane 2, broke the world record by a long way and never looked like losing. Rice's 3rd gold medal of the games as well.

Anyone else annoyed at the hype surrounding the American swimmer I can't even be bothered to name?

The only reason he's won so many golds is because theres so many different swimming events he can enter.

Winning 100 metres gold > Winning 5 second rate swimming events.

He'll be forgotten about in a weeks time, so much for the 'greatest athlete of all time' that some people were calling him rolleyes.gif What an insult to real legends like Ali, Lewis, Maradona, Woods etc. This swimmer isn't fit to breath the same air as them.

Can't wait for the 100 metres to get under way. It looks certain we'll see a new world record with Gay, Bolt and Powell set to do battle on Saturday. The probabklt lack of a tail wind is the only thing that will stop a new world record. That shouldn't take away from the what we're about to witness though.

I think Gay will do it, or at least I hope he does. A lot will depend on his fitness though. This is what the Olympics is about, not some second rate swimming events or bloody hockey.
Bel
Phelps is not human.

He's 6 for 6. 2 more events for him to go.

He's amazing.

Lol, isn't he the most decorated Olympian ever? How can you take anything away from that?

And he's only 23. I wouldn't call him the greatest athlete of all time, but he is definitely up there. And for those who consider swimming the greatest sport, he is most definitely the best.
Wembley1968
Decorated yes, but in second rate events. Well done to him, clearly the greatest swimmer ever but the real greats strut their stuff in track and field.

I think it says more about the amount of mickey mouse events that someone can win 7 or 8 medals at 1 games. The facts prove it's much easier to win numerous golds in swimming, than in other harder events. In football terms, it would be like someone saying 4 League Cups are better than 1 European Cup. It's not about quantity, it's about the quality and standard of events. The Olympics has sold it's soul, theres just too many events that don't deserve to part of the Olympics games these days.

If Usain Bolt manages to do the 100 metres and 200 metres double, it will be the greatest achievement at these games by far.

Lookng at the 100 metre heats today, I have to say I think Bolt will do it. Tyson Gay is clearly struggling, his injury put his preperations back and he just doesn't look ready or good enough to beat Powell or Bolt. A real shame because he's a credit to the sport and I've got money on him!

Bolt ran 9.92 and wasn't out of first gear, unbelievable. If he can cope with the pressure tomorrow in the final he will smash the world record.

Andres.
Dude swimming laps is not easy, its very very tiring. Humans aren't meant to race in water, what he is doing is very difficult and he's making it look oh so easy. I'm happy for the guy, he deserves the praise.

Swimming and sprinting are different sports, but they both are very difficult and they both have their merit.
Vic.
Bolt is just a monster. As M2008 said, he ran 9.92 without breaking a sweat. He stopped running at full speed at 40 meters! ohmy.gif Then he just relaxed visibly, looked left and right 2 or 3 times and finished the race as if he was strolling in the park. Amazing.

Sprinting is harder on the body than swimming though. I'm not saying he isn't a great athlete, he is. The best swimmer ever and he deserves praise. I just find the hype surrounding him rather over the top.

new developments about the age of the chinese women's gymnastics team.
Andres.
Why is it a big deal that the girl is younger than 16 again?
Pirès7
phelps deserves the hype he gets. he won 6 goals medals and break 6 world records in those times. that is amazing.

anyways. i think china, in general, was a poor place for the oylmpics to be held, e.g. tibet stuff, cencoring of the internet/free speech problems, ticket problems, poor ticket allocation leading to empty seats, stabbing attack, nothing special opening ceremony, girl that just lip singed in the opening ceremony just because she was more good looking than the real singer etc... i cant believe why people are saying this will be the best olympics ever.
