hmmm....I dont rate John Terry all that highly, I mean he is a very good player, but relative to other European stars, i dont think he really compares.

Puyol and Nesta i believe are the best, Cannavaro is close.

Ramos is a very good talent, he has a lot of potential, but he is relativley unproven, and to call him the best european defender, above Puyol and Nesta, is a bit of a strecth, and maybe just a little biased i think

Best European defender at the moment is Nesta. Puyol and Terry are very good but not the best. Cannavaro, Ayala, Stam, Thuram and Maldini are slightly better than them.

But still defenders like Ferdinand, Lucio and Campbell are not far behind in terms of current form.

Roberto Carlos? He's past it now, wasn't really the defensive type anyway, he's always been the type to bomb forward, basically a second winger.

Now there's a leftback who is past his best but is still awesome. I'de prefer him at LB than Carlos. His reading of the game and anticipation is awesome, as is his strength and tackling.

I think John Terry is the best defender in Europe. Allesandro Nesta and Carlos Puyol are a very close second to him. Maldini is good but he is past his prime now dont get me wrong Maldini was one of the best defenders to ever play football. I think that Gabriel Tamas and Vincent Kompany will both be the next tow best defenders in the world. Tamas plays for Dinamo Bucharest and Komapny i am sure you are all familar with plays with Anderlecht.

I think Jaap Stam is quality

Based on their current condition:
Nesta is not in such a good form since his finger injury in October...
Terry is a very good defender,but a little over-rated IMO.
As for Puyol,he is great,a commanding figure in defence_much more than the previous two_but...I am not sure he is the best defender in Europe.I think I will go for Carracher,he is stable,plays well in every game...and Liverpool's clean sheet for 10 games is an accomplishment he deserves credit for.
