Hmm, bit difficult to answer myself, I suppose one would want to know what to base it on; ERA, W-L ratio, BB given up, K's or Saves

Well if we look at starting pitchers ERA, Roger Clemens has the lowest in the league at 1.51, but Chris Carpenter has the most wins at 19. But someone like Chad Cordero, who is a closer, has 43 saves and a 0.94 ERA, so I guess it is all relative.

I would have to go with the D-Train, Dontrelle Willis, love that guy. 18-8 with a 2.61 ERA. And he helps his own cause, he has a .229 AVG this season.

And check out his leg kick...

D-Train baby!

Also Johan Santana even though he is having kind of an off-year.

A.J. Burnett is pitching lights out right now also.

Agreed, Santana is having an ok year, 13-6 with a 3.15 ERA, but he is second in the league with 195 K's.

Burnett was 4-2 in the month of August, but he lost his last 2 starts. And his ERA jumped to over 3 because of his last start, but overall not a bad year at 12-8 with 3.06 ERA.

We all hate to admit this and I HATE to say it but its Roger Clemens. I cannot believe that he is still pitching, and that he still has that minute era (last I checked it was under 2?) I dont know how the Red Sox let him go labeling him a has been. Since then he's racked up what...ten good years? God knows how many Cy Youngs. I'm not basing this on history though, this year hes been great.

Look out for Jake Peavy in the future. Fuck, look out for him right now. He won the ERA title last year, this year hes leading the league in K's (last I checked), hes 12-6 this year (not amazing, but good) He's still really young and he went one on one with Clemens a couple of weeks ago and beat him. They both threw complete games that day but only Peavy's was a shutout. The Sports people blame it on "the lack of offense by the Astros when Clemens pitches" but merit has to go to Peavy also. This guy's gonna win a couple of Cy Young's before its all said and done.

Oh and Trevor Hoffman now second all-time in Saves, and he has only blown one save this season. Pretty good for someone who was also labeled a has-been when he went out for surgery and we were in the midst of the Gagne era.
bob
Same label slapped when Clemens lost to the Dodgers. Nice try.

Johan Santana, Eric Gagné, Trevor Hoffman, and Bartolo Colon are good.

with out a doubt its Roger clemens he still can bring it even at the age of 40, although Imo Roy Halladay is one of the best pitchers in the AL
TC
i like Eric Gagne......i dont watch much baseball but when i see him he is always pitching great
Nando.
I wouldnt put it past Clemens that he is a roid head. The guy is huge, much bigger than his Red Sox days. I know there is a bit of heat on him for it.

TBH, i dont think Clemens is one to take roids, he runs 4-5 miles a day (i belive he does a 10min mile if i remember rightly) and works out in the gym every day. Hes 6' 4", Weight 220 lb hes going to look big

TBH i dont think the Mets would be able to afford Manny hes on what $20+ mil a season but anything can happen in baseball.

Pitching isn't one particular discipline..... comparing a reliever to a starter is like comparing Michael Owen to Sol Campbell.... completely different.

And what are we judging it by... some have had great seasons .... some have had great careers.

Roger Clemens would get my vote for best modern day pitcher... after the the "Bob Gibson" Rule.

I think from a relief pitching standpoint... Mariano Rivera is the best reliever in the history of baseball. His post season ERA is the best ever.

I agree about Rivera being one of the best relievers in post-season history, but to say hes the best in the history of baseball when hes up against the likes of:

Dennis Eckersley

Rich Gossage

Lee Smith

Trevor Hoffman
bob
Eck was good, but there's something that he'll never be forgotten for: Kirk Gibson.
TH420

Goosage was never lights out because of his lack of control.... too many walks..... over 700 in less than 2000 IP.

Eck was great... but he wasn't dominant for a long enough time ..... he only had 5 seasons out of 11 as a reliever where he's ERA was under 3.00 (Rivera has had 9 out 10 seasons with an ERA under 3.00).

Lee Smith was a great pitcher ... but stuck around too long for the save record. Switched teams like 8 times and only averaged about 30 saves a year.... never played for a great team.

Trevor Hoffman has done more with less..... he doesn't have a great fastball.... but uses a change-up as an out pitch..... but comparing him to Rivera is like comparing a VW to a BMW.... they're both German cars and that's where the similarity ends.

Rivera has the best stats of any reliever with over 300 career saves.... has the best cut-fastball in the history of the game.... also has a rising fastball that tops out at 98 mph.... can throw a slider and a splitter for K's when opponents are not expecting it..... his amazing resume gets even better when you look at his post seasons statistics.

Mo Rivera has given up 9 earned runs in 108 post season innings. he is 8-1 with 32 saves and an ERA of 0.75.... thats unheard of.... there is no question he is the best.... none.
