Since they are in the easiest group , i would say that this time, they have great chances to be in the last 8 , assuming that they can give 2 big performances in the 1/8 finals .
After that , it's a lottery , because in the last 8 you only find the best teams in Europe , so i think Arsenal , despite losing their captain Viera this summer , are still a very dangerous team so who knows , maybe they can make a surprise .
But honestly i don't think they can win it , because In my opinion , you have 4 or 5 clubs in Europe who are very experienced with the CL , and tactically very flexible depending the opponent , and Arsenal is a team in my view , that play invariably a very entertaining football of offence and possession which works very well in the Premierleague , but in Europe against the big clubs it's a different matter , as we've shown these last years .
Still , they can do it , because anything can happen in football , and Arsenal own great players (Henry , Hleb , Reyes , Fabregas , Cole , Bergkamp , Pirés ..) so who knows , if they make a great season it can happen , but i'm quite sceptical about it .
For me Barcelona , Real Madrid , Juventus , Milan , Bayern , Chelsea etc.. are better teams in the CL currently

I dont think anyone thought Liverpool would win the CL.
You need that bit of luck in the CL. Like Porto had alot of luck against Man utd.

Luck? Manchester are lucky Porto didn't beat them 5,6-1 in the first leg. Porto were the better team out of the 2 legs and deserved to go through.
About Arsenal winning the CL no. They have to be more consistent they struggle against the smaller teams in Cl and struggle a lot against the bigger clubs. I just don't think they have the squad to win the Cl right now.

He was referring to the referee ruling out a totally fine goal for offside and then Porto scoring in the last min after a fumble, that was luck and Porto sure as hell didn't play better in the 2nd leg.
As for Arsenal, their style of play just doesn't work in European football, they struggle when they shouldn't, have lost one of their best players and had an abysmal pre-season transfer wise and have a psychological block at the QF stage, so in short NO imo.

Arsenal could be the underdogs for winning it this time. But as said above, Arsenal plays a style of footy that works well in the EPL, but it's different in the CL. Thier playing styles aren't always as effective.

It hasn't been a bad pre-season simply because of Hleb.

And the fact that Baptista essentially turned you down after a long chase, you failed to sign a top quality keeper, strengthen the defence and you lost Patrick Vieira doesn't make it a bad pre-season ?

I never said Porto played better in the second leg. But when you look over the matches of the 2 legs the more deserving team went through and that was Porto.

I don't think Arsenal can win it this year. Every single year they seem to fade away. They're lucky they have the easiest group this year. They will make it to the 2nd round but nothing more tbh. They lack talented players and their bench is not impressive. I don't think they're strong enough to be a factor in this season's Champions League.

Arsenal have a very very slim chance totouch the CL cup, unless they will make big signings: 1 worldclass striker (neither Henry, Bergkamp nor Persie are this type), 1 worldclass midfielder (to replace Vieira) and 1 worldclass center back (senderos and campbel? lousy couple)
Arsenal have missed a golden chance of getting Owen as their inbox striker!

I agree with you ! Arsenal are really too dependent on Henry and they really should have gone for Owen, a world class striker who can score 25-30 goals a season. It would really have helped by buying him.
Anyway to the topic, Liverpool and Porto squashed the critics, showed that they could win even though being branded as "underdogs" at first. Arsenal can win it too but realistically this season i think not. First of all they haven't shown they are a classy side that can win it, secondly they haven't found a very good replacement for Vieira & lastly, the other teams this season have strengthened so much ! Look at Inter, Real Madrid, Chelsea, etc.

In a word no, Arsenal's best chance of a trophy this year is the Fa Cup.
You will miss Viera's class in Europe but you weren't that great with him anyway, teams can just break down your speedy, down the middle attacks easily in Europe, maybe a chance of tactics is in order. It's not as if Arsenal don't have the players or the right manager it's just that your playing style doesn't suit Europe imo, you would have been great 4/5 seasons ago but defences have improved.

i think they can't win it because i think that there are better teams around and that Arsenal does not make the big plays when they have the chance to.
(thrown out by Chelsea despite an 1-1 away, thrown out by Bayern thanks to a bad performance in a very important away game)

It is far too early to see how Arsenal will do eventually in their group stages, but I'd say that they have as much of a chance of surviving through the competition as any of the other remaining Premiership clubs in the CL (minus Everton, who got themselves booted after a defeat at Villareal). Or, better yet, with most of the elite teams of Europe.
If they really want to win the Champions League so badly, they might as well go to the Man Upstairs and ask for a miracle. It worked wonders for Liverpool.

I can't see Arsenal winning the Champions League.... especially if Wenger doesn't change tactics.... Fabregas and Flamini are good young midfielders but neither one can play the same role as Vieria.... big campaigns are needed by Pires and Ljunberg... and they can have no slip-ups while Henry is out injured from the Ireland match.
And they need a good draw..... like Rangers in the Round of 16 so Bergkamp can get to the game in under a week (Bergkamp afraid of airplanes)... a long trip on the continent and Bergkamp spends a day and a half on a train or in a car.... if he travels at all. And they need his creativity desperately to win when the business end of the competition starts in March.

True, you outplayed us completely that night and deserved the win.
Only you and Fiorentina have beaten us on English soil (Fiorentina game was at Wembley).
We've had some fantastic wins at home against the Italian sides in recent years though. Torino, Sampdoria, Lazio and Juve all come to mind, we should've beaten AC Milan as well.

lol, of course, coz we haven't done much else have we!!
i think we also pulled off a decent win against roma, and maybe one other big team.
well anyway, back on topic, i don't think we'll win it. i think we should win our group just fine, but i'm not sure if we'll reach the quarter finals. unless wenger does something during the christmas transfer window (i'm confident he'll bring in at least 1 more player). is it possible though? VERY. luck plays a major role in champions league, but facing experienced cl sides, we usually crumble.
i thought we'd cope fairly well, but with injuries and so forth (though not long term), it still has a major effect on us. this season, we haven't been outplayed at our best. middlesborough beat us, we weren't playing well, and were missing henry, against chelsea, missing sol. of course, i know that a good team needs a good squad, and can still win when not on form, but i had this feeling of pure consistency at the v start of the season, but i've lost it. of course, still have faith!!
