Giovanni dos Santos should have a thread now, as it is becoming clear that he has Messi like potential. I thought I'd start this, so we can track his development in this thread.

Giovanni has said that in order to avoid what has happened with Messi, he is going to start the paper work to get his Spanish passport as soon as he is back in Barcelona.

Also, he said he wants to follow in Messi's steps. His goal is to be a champion at Barca, and no other place. This is good news for us, as it seems other clubs are already interested.

The best thing he has said so far: El jugador avisó que cierra las puertas al Real Madrid. “Que no vengan porque si lo hacen les voy a decir que no”, señaló el jugador mexicano.

Translated: The player advised that he has closed the doors on Real Madrid. "They shouldn't come asking, because if they do, I'm going to tell them no", said the mexican player.

HAHAHA, He may not be anything yet... but I like the attitude! thumbsup.gif

According to Sport.es Barca's newest pearl of the cantera, Giovanni Dos Santos, is being chased by EPL clubs Arsenal and Manchester United. Dos Santos is raising eyebrows at the U-17 WC and is widely considered the best player in the tournament. Now, the world has seen what he has to offer and his stock is skyrocketing. Barca must be careful to protect their young star and prevent another 'Cesc' affair.

I think it is pretty revealing that the clubs involved in Giovanni dos Santos' future are Barca, Arsenal and Manchester. All three have a great tradition of fostering a healthy youth system. Arsenal gets their main youth talent from Africa and France while England concentrates more on English players as well as some from America. Barca relies on a good balance of Spanish and South American talents.

As a RM fan I cannot help look to Barca's youth and scouting programs with an envious eye. Why don't we have any stars in the U17 WC? You would think that players from around the world would want to play for Real Madrid! That just goes to show what a tremendous job Ramon Martinez and the rest of his band of credents are doing with our cantera.

Anyway I digress, I admire Barca's youth policy. I feel like it is a great way to keep the fans happy (this is, ultimately, what football is all about right?). Players that come out of the youth system help to inspire the fans. Look at the amount of press Messi has gotten this summer. Did he play well, poorly did he say he loves barca did he have a toothache did he get a new haircut etc. The fans can't get enough of him, and when he finally gets to start regularly, he will be an instant idol.

Anyway can you imagine Messi taking Giuly's spot and Dos santos taking Deco's in a few years? Barca could play a 4-2-3-1 with Ronaldinho, Dos Santos, and Messi. It would be pretty unreal. Wish I could say the same about Real thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

Yeah, I saw that. They have been putting youth talent in one thread to keep well orginized, but I think this guy is about to boom... so I'd like to see a thread for him if possible.... just my hope, I have no control obviously.... let the thread live mods! whistling.gif cheers1.gif

Midfield, 16.... I think, not 100% sure on this one.

Anyone have more info on that, and maybe highlights of him from the U17 world cup he is playing in right now in Peru?

I saw highlights of him in the video section, go to the international thread and you will see a thread on the U17 WC. I think he is kinda like Ronaldinho/Messi. He plays as an attacking midfielder. HE even kinda looks like Ronaldinho with his pony tail.

Amazing, I've said this before but it needs to be said again: we're so fortunate to have a great youth system. New young exciting players seem to sprout out of nowhere, and the beautiful thing about it is that they're so loyal to the club.

I just wish for better defenders, I mean since Puyol there hasn't been anyone that can fill his shoes. We have an abundance of midfielders and attackers but we need more talent in defence.

Yeah, he looks good. Too bad he's Mexican sad.gif He looks like he'll be a handful for the US in years to come.

offtopic2.gif Speaking of the US, I watched the highlights from our game....nothing too spectacular except one nice free kick. Most noteworthy though is that our goalkeeper is absolutely atrocious.
rafa_b
The players like Cesc, Iniesta, Messi and Dos Dantos aren't about having a good youth setup in terms of coaching although this helps, it's all about the scouting. Barcelona find the greatest raw talents early and then polish them with the great facilities and training. There is only so much they can be taught though and then there natural talent takes over.

I would love to know how your club is finding these players. To have Messi would be amazing, but to have Dos Santos as well is unreal. Barca's South American youth scout will be getting a tasty bonus or two pretty soon IMO

True but he's a right back and he likes to attack as well. What I meant was a CB like Puyol, so far only Oleguer has broke into the first team. And although he's highly criticised, he's done an OK job, and can only improve and get better as he gains experience.

But the others like Mario, Rodri? (is he a defender?) F. Navarro, have either been sold, loaned out or are in Barca B. To the point, we don't have enough quality in defence as much as we do in offence coming from the youth system.

I'm not complaining, I just think for a great club like Barca we should be looking at all areas that can be improved.
Sabzi

F.Navaro has been sold to my knowledge to umm Mallorca or something, I aint sure.

About why Barca doesnt have news about there young defenders.. well you'll have to consider that defenders develop a bit later than midfielders/attackers. It takes them time to build muscle mass, experience and then shine as a starting player.

Back to Dos Santos... I think Barca are lucky to have such young talents and smart to have employed such scouts to find these talents. Like rafabenitez mentioned its all about the scouts. Building the youth academy is easy, finding the talents to adopt is the tough part.

He's been loaned out. He was pretty close to breaking through in the Barca XI a couple of years ago, I believe.

He played for Mallorca agianst us at Nou Camp, when we won 2-0. Didn't look too good against Giuly.

This guy sounds awesome, there is alot of talk about him for sure but they need to nurture his talents and make sure he dosnt get a big head. The portugese learn't this lesson with Quaresma I feel, he came to us thinking he was all that and really didnt excell when he clearly had the talent to do so.

Cheers for the links, checking these out now.

He looks impressive, very fast, smart and does resemble Ronaldinho immensely. Even the way he passes laugh.gif

He's young, and given time will break into the first team as he's obviously very talented. We dont want another Fabregas fiasco.

So far i've seen him play at the U17 WC and he pretty much ripped Australia to shreds, which isn't that hard to do really laugh.gif

Also had a look at those clips and he has all the talent, just needs to nurture it properly, and get past the bird's and booze stage laugh.gif

Watch out Real, not only do we have Messi, we also have Giovanni Dos Santos clapping.gif
Daniel10
He is really good, I like his type of play aswell.
Sabzi

After watching the clips.. I think he's a Ronnie clone. Same look same play... even almost the same face. well without Ronnie's big teeth and gum laugh.gif
mikaldinho
looks like a very good young player, more in the Messi mould than the Ronaldinho, he just glides past players, god football brain it seems and lightning pace. He really shouldn't get too much pressure on him though, the lads only 16. Great prospect nonetheless
F.G. Lorca

Another Barca jewel
Looks like it doesn't even matter that Cesc is gone
I dont know about Pique cuz he is a defender
But this Giovani kid looks like a real king of the U/17's
He assumes soo much maturity in his game
He's got that thing about him that says "i'm a champion"
When will Barca ever stop? i hope NEVER

F.G. Lorca
meh, i still wish we had cesc, there different types of players sad.gif

but this guy has got loads of talent smile.gif

I think that he has to build up some more muscle mass though, which im sure will come with age, ecspecialy at a youth system like barca's who will be doing all they can.

It is times like these where i am glad that our club concentrates so much on the football, instead of the money and the marketing.

Heh, you still seem extremely bitter about the whole Cesc thing. I was like that for quite a long time too. Everytime I heard his name and how well he played, I'd get all pissed ranting.gif I still wish we had him too, but you gotta move on. Hopefully someday he comes back to us.

Definetely agree with you on the last part.

The only thing that worries me is that we keep chucking out fantastic, yet 'lightweight' players. Messi is tiny (growth hormone deficiency), as are Iniesta and Xavi, as was Cesc and dos Santos isn't exactly massive. They're obviously all great players, but in years to come we may end up being bullied off the pitch.

FIFA U-17 World Championship
Dos Santos: The young veteran

(FIFA.com) 29 Sep 2005

He may be only sixteen, but you have to look at him close-up to remind yourself that Giovani Dos Santos is still an adolescent. His round face and sparkling eyes are perhaps the last traces of his childhood, as in terms of his play and attitude, the Mexican is every inch the battle-hardened professional.

After the Tricolores' training session on 27th September, the atmosphere at Chiclayo's Elias Aguirre stadium was upbeat. But as the media buzzed around the players, two were commanding particular attention. Carlos Vela, the forward with the face of an angel, and Giovani Dos Santos, the playmaker with the distinctive ponytail. On the eve of the semi-final of the FIFA U-17 World Championship Peru 2005, the Mexican camp could scarcely have been more relaxed, with everyone perfectly happy to talk to the press.

Already seemingly an old hand, Dos Santos slips seamlessly from one interview to another. When asked to mime a few playing moves for the camera, he does so without embarrassment. For this is a lad who has already been at Barcelona for four years, so media attention is nothing new to him.

"It was hard at first as I missed my family, and I had to get used to the food and to Spanish culture. But now my family is with me and it's a lot easier," he reveals to FIFA.com. To provide him with support, his father, Zizinho, a Brazilian and a former professional, accompanies him everywhere. He is with him in Peru for this tournament, but Dos Santos is at pains to point out that he is far from dependent on him. "He doesn't give me advice. He just tells me after games what I did well and what I did badly, that's all," he declares firmly.

Already, some of Europe's top clubs are monitoring his progress. "I've no intention of changing club as I'm happy at Barcelona, but it's flattering to know that I interest the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal." Behind the scenes, his father takes care of such matters. "I don't want my boy to be distracted by all that as he's got enough on his plate with this tournament," Zizinho told the Mexican press recently.

If truth be told, his father's presence seems altogether natural. "He doesn't put any pressure on me. He's always been my coach, so having him close by is normal for me." And this is clearly one dad who knows how to nurture his children, as Giovani's younger brother, Jonathan, is also on the books at Barcelona. "It would be great to play together one day for the national side. I hope we get the chance to do that," the youngster muses, before adding with a smile: "he's a midfielder and I'm a striker, so he'll have to keep passing to me, which would be pretty funny!"

"I can't wait to get stuck in"
Despite his father being Brazilian and an ex-professional with various Mexican clubs, the possibility of playing Brazil in the final holds no special significance for him. "Honestly, that doesn't really make any difference to me. I was born in Mexico and I'm Mexican, but like any player I suppose, beating Brazil in the final of a world event would make me tremendously proud…"

Before any more talk of Brazil, however, the Netherlands must first be overcome, and the youngster is well aware that this tie is no foregone conclusion. "They're a very strong, quick team and we'll have to be at our best to keep them out. We know what we have to do," he asserts. To indicate his confidence, he quickly adds: I feel good, relaxed and happy to be here. I can't wait to get stuck into this semi-final."

On the field, Dos Santos performs a typical playmaker's role, dictating the pace of the game and supplying the chief goalscorer, Carlos Vela. Being the side's youngest player is quite clearly not a problem for him, and on account of his nonchalant air and powerful thighs, the comparisons with his clubmate Ronaldinho have already been drawn. Being likened to the Brazilian clearly pleases him: "I don't know how they can compare me to him: I'm only just starting out, I've still got a long way to go."

Self-assured, but not bigheaded: that is Giovani. And like a seasoned professional, he does a good line in diplomacy. "I don't see my role in the team as more important than anyone else's. Everyone knows precisely what they have to do, which is the secret of our success." Each phrase is weighed carefully and repeated for the Mexican journalists who, sensing an historic achievement, are now tracking the team's every move.

But Dos Santos is far from being the sole architect of El Tri's success. This Mexican side boasts a wealth of exciting talent. Does he dream of them all winning a FIFA World CupTM together one day? "Why not, you never know. But for now, we're focusing on this tournament. After that, we'll probably come together again in the youth side, but we have to take it one stage at a time." The boy is not getting carried away... An old head on young shoulders, you might say.

But when the subject of his homeland is mentioned, his eyes at last light up, revealing a glimpse of the child within this mature exterior. "It makes us really proud when the folks back home are interested in us," he admits with a beaming smile. But his calm demeanour is quickly restored. "The fact that there's so much interest is a mark of what a good job we're doing." Then, with a firm handshake and a muchas gracias!, Dos Santos departs with a smile…to give another interview!

I agree with you, but at his age, I think if Barca were smart, they would LOAN him to Chivas for 1 or 2 years to get some fresh high level experience.... then have him back at Barca at 18, after having played against adults for 2 years.

Just an idea. Maybe, based on Messi, that isn't the best path for high skill players in our youth system.... I just don't know.

i saw him 2day against brazil he is indeed very talented, but he plays quite similar to messi with those talents we woouldnt have to buy an attacking midf. for a long time.

3-0 I believe.

Giovani with the first assist, and if you could call it that, a second assist on the 2nd goal cause the ball actually did come off his head from the pass laugh.gif

Whether he meant it or not we'd have to ask, but the 2nd goal was a top-notch volley.

He was substituted in the 78th minute I believe, his sub, Guzman scored the 3rd goal.
Lorenzo.
U-17 WC MVP was Anderson, not Dos Santos, but he was very close second. Man, this kid is awsome.
