He watches and smiles(sometimes) on to GK face and BOOM, corner.

for me i pick a spot, usually the keepers weakness, observe him while he trains so u know his weak spot, don't chnage ur mind, eg shooting on my rie i face the right, i angle my body towards it n thump a low shot in, if i c he moves, it doesn't matter because he won't save it neway, unless he has Dida's physique n spring.Haha.

yeah i think if you are just really good at nailing it HARD to any corner or side netting, you cant go wrong. Just don't psyche yourself out, stay with your decision and strike that shit

Two most important things while taking a penalty :
1. Kick it along the ground, make it low so that the goalie has lesser chance of pulling off a save (until you kick it down the middle).
2. Go for the corners. Be calm, no need to blast the ball, just poke it into the corners. Thats the easy way.
A low kick into the corner will go in even if you put buffon b/w the posts.

well if u go for top corner at full pelt the keeper has no chance, because it is impossible for the keeper to get up there quick enough, because by the time the knees adjust to go upwards and u spring and stretched, the ball is in the back of the net... heard this during england v portugal i think, was in a shoot out anyway. but that if u have good accuracy, i don't take pens but when i have to i just get everything behind it and hope it goes into the net

if you are like vieri who can totally smash it anywhere he wants, you're in good shape!! but if you're not, i suggest the following:
1. faint your body to a side(the side you dont want to go) g/k will automatically think you're going that side, while u smash it into the other corner.
2. look at a side for a long time, making the goalie think you're going over there, when he jumps over there you kick it into the other side.
3. (my favorite) if u saw the holland-italy game in euro 2000.. u will remember totti's chip. a lot of g/k are trained to fall to a side of the goal in a pk. so what u do is, when they fly their heart out (like van der sar did) to a side, u will have chipped the ball into the center of the net!
but i recomend vieri's style!!

Don't take a penalty unless...
-you are fighting for top-scorer position
-it's a penalty shoot-out and you need to
-everyone else in your team is completely inadequate!
like someone said above, it'll ruin your confidence if you miss, or ruin your country's WC chances if you are Wome...
anyway, if you are a specialist at them then take them, why not?
Matt Le Tissier was an expert at taking penalties. He scored 36/37 and he said his technique was to "pick a corner and drive it hard and accurately".
It sounds easy, and I honestly believe it is.
Never shoot it at mid-height though, always low (preferably) or high (if you're good like Ronnie).

yea in my team i was a specialist at penalties. never missed unless i was just fooling around. even the crap penalties went in for me. but too bad my team had this stupid system where the guy who got fouled takes it. f*ckin stupid i'd say. the guy ended up missing the penalty

btw i actully hurt someone taking a pen like this because i was trying to take the micky and i hit it quite slow and he started to dive left then saw my shot going the other way an tryed to dive to the left and he ended up in a pile in the middle of the goal with an almost broken elbow

well i believe you have begun saying defensive things in order to pull back from the argument to end it quickly (if this can barely qualify as an argument). i first stated my position on my former team as the penalty specialist and you went from there to put me down by making me out to be an ego-maniac, a person full of himself. when i pointed this out to ask why it was such a crime, to be the specialist on my team at taking penalties and getting lucky on even miss hit ones, you respond with this. the system i had with my team i have already pointed out and you have agreed and i have agreed once more over again that it was completely ludicrous and the image i have already said was for comical purposes. perhaps you haven't the proper ability to read or perhaps you haven't the proper ability to decipher the letters on the screen to make meaning of them. whatever the case, it seems that now YOU are acting immature as you have said i was indirectly by use of sarcasm. using profanity and insults to withdraw from the conversation is really mature, right? i think you have a problem, but there is a cure. help me, help you. you are not a bad person, this is just a disease. it is formed from a habit of bad behaviours from your past, most likely, and you can still turn yourself around and get yourself on the right track if you put your mind to it. i will arrange help for you, and i mean professional psychologists. if i get you the help will you follow through with it? because only you have the power to change YOURself for the better. you have to WANT to do it.

Well as a goalkeeper, ill give my views on penalties.
Basically, the eyes of the penalty taker are so often a big giveaway. my technique when facing penalties used to be either dive to my right (my stronger side) or try and wait till the very last moment to gauge where hes gonna kick it. of course, as you get older, shots get more powerful and accurate so you have to start diving earlier. so my usual technique would be to go right, and i would only ever save the odd one where i didnt move and he hit it straight.
so first penalty i faced last season i decided to try and work out where he was aiming before he ran in, so looked at his face and he was staring to my left hand side, so i thought what the hell? ill go left. so the moment he hit the ball i just leaped to my left at full stretch, and much to my suprise the ball smacked straight into my hands and one of my defenders ran in and cleared it. lol, it may have looked spectacular, but it wasnt all that difficult, the taker did all the work for me. i just dived and he hit it straight to me. now if only i didnt concede the winner 3 mins later..........
so basically, from a goalkeeper's point of view, the eyes are often a giveaway and its a good technique for trying to save them. try and gauge where they are looking before they run in and you might have a good chance of getting lucky.
i havent read the first page of this thread yet so this may have been mentioned, but what do some of you guys do with where you are looking? do you try and bluff the goalkeeper or just look where you are aiming?
i know the one time i went up to take one, i looked to the goalkeepers left and slotted into his right corner, he didnt move a muscle though so i guess it didnt really matter.

I miss very few and i only miss because they hit the post, simply do what Shearer did when he was 24. Wait for the ref to blow the whistle to show he's ready. Put the ball on the spot, walk away with your back to the ball, stop facing away from the goal, turn running at the ball, head down so the keeper cant see your eyes, you'll be able to look out the top of your eyes to see the keepers movement. This technique usually leaves the keeper standing still!

ok i've done an experiment with a USL league match that went to penalties. i haven't yet had the time to assess higher quality of football, but at least at a lower quality, this is what i found. i predicted that if you are confident in taking the penalty the taker looks straight on ahead and doesn't seem to lose focus while when they are not confident they start fidgeting, looking elsewhere, and not looking straight ahead a lot of times. with this "theory" i predicted every penalty that was to be taken at that USL league match and i got it right 90 % of the times. i'll have to see if this is true also with higher quality football.

haha my friend (this was in a penalty tournament in practice)
he pulleed the back of his shorts down, and when he ran up to the ball, he pulled his shirt up, did a quick 180 and mooned the keeper! the keeper, needless to say was stunned/on the ground laughing his ass off, and he put the penalty in effortlessly.
Not one method id reccomend trying, but hey, it worked.

This may sound wierd but if u want to sych a keeper out so ur chances our higher of scoring well...
Squeeze ur balls just before u start ur run up.

It realy works havent missed every time ive done it

It should work if the Keepers is Gay or Straight,

Cos both types will end up having there mind on whether the Pen taker swings either way.

P.S if using this then dont shoot down the centre as the keeper hardly moves after doing it. (There to confused)

I have a couple of ways I've put penalties in.
-High, inside of the foot bend, placed
-Low, hard, inside of the foot bend
-Walk up to the ball extremely slow, varying the speed of your steps, and wait for the keeper to move or put it in whichever side netting is more comfortable for you
-Cristiano Ronaldo blast with the instep
-Act like you're going to bend it into the right side netting (your right, if right footed) but hit it so it goes left side netting. Your whole body should be going right the whole time, and bend will help it into the side netting.

choose a spot, not matter where it is have faith and confidence in your abilty to hit it, dont signal where it is going to be in any way and DONT CHANGE YOUR MIND DURING THE RUN UP.
if u plan to dummy the keeper and see where he is going, do that but dont let the keeper put you off. the chances of scoring are always in the takers advantage.

I take a peanlty very simple
Move back. Run. Shoot. Celebrate.
Make sure you take the first kick. Hit it so hard that you want the keeper to save it so he can get injured. Then the rest of your team scores. your team wins

Shoot the into the middle of the goal, it takes some practice but when you know how to do it, you'll score from every single penalty you take. In 95% of penalties, goalies dive to the corner.
Another good strategy is to stop just before you are about to kick the ball, watch where the goalie is diving and boom!, the ball is in the net.

Mar 18 2008, 02:55 PM
First, walk 10 meters away from the ball, stop, close your eyes, start running to the ball and kick as hard as you can. Should be worth it. You won't score, though.
Jamesbh11
Mar 18 2008, 04:01 PM
Run slowly to the ball and pretend to shoot , pause for 1 second until the GK diving to one side and shoot to the middle or to other side (without using much of power)
Now this sounds easy but it requires BIG GUT and AGILITY of your feet to place the ball to the right corner (or top middle).
In reality, when facing a "critical PK" (or worst penalty shoot down) your feet stifffen, your mental is loosen ... that's the HARDEST part ...to control GOOD LUCK

Mar 18 2008, 04:06 PM
I do the Zidane way, I always pick the same spot. It doesn't matter whether the keeper knows I'm gonna shoot it there or not (they wouldn't with me, but a few did with Zizou), you just practice hitting that spot perfectly as hard and quickly as possible and unless the keeper is really leaning on the side you're aiming for, go for that everytime.
I like to keep it as low as possible even though if you're sure of your strike you can try kicking it on the top corner. Being a left-footed player, it's always bottom-right. Out of about a dozen fired, I never got a penalty rejected in any competitive games that I fired, I say that 'cause the one I missed...I slipped before I could fire it properly and my leg hit the ball....it was just terrible conditions to be playing in.

I really wouldn't go for anything else, like trying to play mental games with the keeper and such. Simple muscle memory is all that's needed to be a great penalty taker. If you do something you've done millions of times before without even having to think about it, the pressure is much easier to deal with.
