Job titles are confusing. Adidas' job page is
Clicky so you might be able to contact someone from there and ask about it.
Nike has lots of different titles as well (such as senior footwear designer - running)

They would almost all be Mechanical Engineers or a closely related qualiftication such as Sports Engineering which is basically Mechanical engineering except you do projects based on sports equipment rather than anything else. Some might have Product Design degrees or similar but Mechanical Engineering would be the best bet. I am studying it right now!

I think any kind of design, they really want you to have background with other places before you go to nike.

Thanks for the feedback peoples. I think also that you have to have knowledge in physiology and biomechanics to understand how the body works in able to design a product that improves performance. Well thats what I read. Sounds like a lot of study with this plus the engineering side of it, but it would be worth it to work for nikefootball or adidasfootball, etc.

You could phone nike and adidas and ask what Quals you would need to pursue a career in Shoe design

If your considering getting into this area then don't do any course which is sports related. These companies like to have people with diverse backgrounds (cars, boats etc).
If you want to be a designer then you have to be good at drawing and have a good imagination (and a fantastic portfolio). If you want to be a developer or engineer then you have to have a good physics and engineering knowledge.
All really competitive areas though, difficult to get a job then you can get f*cked over by the company if someone they think is better comes along.
Getting an internship is the best way in.
(By the way I'm a football footwear designer, at the moment for a smaller european brand but I used to work for a huge brand.)
