ARGYLE manager Ian Holloway spoke of his delight after the Pilgrims clinched the signing of Manchester United forward Sylvan Ebanks-Blake for a potential club-record fee.
The 20-year-old Cambridge-born striker has agreed a three-year deal with the Pilgrims to become Holloway's first signing since being appointed Argyle manager two weeks ago.
The initial fee is £200,000, which could rise past the £300,000 the Pilgrims paid for Peter Swan 15 seasons ago, depending on appearances.
"I'm very, very pleased," said Holloway. "He's someone I have been monitoring for some time. I almost had him on loan last year.
"He's got power; he's got pace; he's hungry to make a reputation. He will be a threat to opponents when we have got the ball and when we haven't - so, defenders, 'Watch out!'
"I am as excited about having him here as he is about coming. I looked him in the eyes when I met him and I am convinced he is someone eager to succeed and who, in my opinion, is as honest as the day is long.
"I just want to help him become the player I believe he can be. He isn't there yet, but he can get there.
"I have got no expectations for him. I just want him to enjoy his football. For £200,000, he is an absolute bargain. We have been quoted half a million for players of his age who aren't as good.
"He's a fantastic player and a fantastic young man, which, for me, is more important than all his other attributes."
Ebanks-Blake will link up with his new team-mates for the first time tomorrow, when the Pilgrims play a pre-season friendly at Grays Athletic before flying out for their week-long Austrian training-camp - and a glamour game against Real Madrid.
Also on board Sunday's flight from Stansted will be Portuguese trailist Mauro Almeida, a 24-year-old centre-back who has recently been with Dutch side FC Zwolle.
Argyle chairman Paul Stapleton revealed that Holloway's arrival had acted as the catalyst for the swift signing.
"We have known about Sylvan for a couple of years," said Stapleton, "so, when Ian mentioned him as a high-priority target, everything just clicked.
"We believe we have got for Argyle a player who will quickly establish himself as one of the best strikers in the Coca-Cola Championship."
Stapleton also paid tribute to Manchester United for their part in the deal, which was completed on Friday afternoon.
"We'd like to thank Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill, United's chief executive, for their help, and we hope that this will be the beginning of a good relationship between the two clubs."
Ebanks-Blake arrives at Home Park with a reputation as a striker for the future.
The basic requirements for any striker are blistering pace, good strength, an exquisite touch, and a healthy appetite for scoring goals and Argyle feel they have found a man who possesses all these attributes, and more.
He first came to prominence in 2003, when he helped Manchester United win the FA Youth Cup. A year later, he made his debut for the United first-team in a Carling Cup match against Crewe Alexandra.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said of his first appearance: "Young Blake, even though he only played ten minutes, showed enough to tell us that he is a player of some promise."
It was another year before he turned out for the first-team. Again it was a Carling Cup match, but this time he scored after coming off the bench against Barnet - Argyle's conquerors in the previous round.
A blossoming career was cruelly hampered by a broken leg sustained in a reserve-team match at the end of the 2004-05 season.
Despite this set-back, Ebanks-Blake made a swift recovery and scored a hat-trick on his return to the United reserves.
He also rekindled his formidable partnership with another exciting young prospect at Old Trafford Guiseppe Rossi.
Although his scoring record at youth and reserve team level is superb, Ebanks-Blake was always going to find it hard to establish himself in a Manchester United team that boasts world class strikers, such as Wayne Rooney, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha.
In January this year, Ebanks-Blake joined United feeder-club Royal Antwerp of Belgium in a short-term loan deal.

I can't say i've seen anything of him before, but all the reports say he could be exactly what Argyle are looking for. A young, quick, talented striker with a great goal-scoring record, he could be the player Argyle have been looking for for years, to bang in the goals in the Championship.
Alex, you might have seen some of him before, what do you reckon? A success at this level? Here's hoping he'll do a Leon Knight-esque job at this level after failing to break through in the Premiership
