I play a lot of rugby as well as football, so I tend to wear my KooGa under shorts for Rugby for football, basically there slightly thicker cycling shorts

Have a look here -

under armour makes some good ones. same with mcDavid, i've had my pair for a year and they're still great! (worn only for matches tho)
also, TARGET even has some good ones. i use those for practice tho.

I think they're meant to keep you warm during the winter. Some of them also make your muscles more compace, allowing you more explosive actions supposedly.

they are meant to make your muscles feel better and apparently decrease the risk of a cramp or pulling a muscle.
I only wear them during proper matches. They just feel too unusual to wear them regularly.

They are also very good in the winter for generally keeping you warm and keeping the breeze out the shorts
And also a godsend when your sliding, especially if hte pitch is dry or has sand in it, or just generally muddy, as it keeps your thighs dry and warm throught and they dont get cut up.
