Who do you guys think will be our first players to play for some of the big clubs and make an impact on teams like Inter, Juve, Chelsea, Barca, Real Madrid etc?
Personally I think Oguchi Onyewu will have a great World Cup and one of the big teams in the EPL will pick him up.
Obviously Adu will eventually make his way into a big team in Europe hopefully
Or do you guys think a U.S. player of that caliber may not be playing pro yet or maybe not even born yet.

I'd say Gooch will have a good shot at making it big.
Beasley hasn't done too shabby either, can't rule out a tranfer for him, although it won't be to a giant.
If we can swoop in and snag Rossi, then there we go, we've got our big-time player.

Ya Rossi is cool. Now I am no expert but of the 3 games that i have watched United play this season( all Champions League) he has not played a minute. I know he is young, but i certainly hope he gets some playing time in league.

Nov 4 2005, 01:16 AM
He scored in the first EPL game he played in. I believe it took him a grand total of 8 minutes from stepping onto the field to finding the back of the net for united. He is still playing in reserve league games as well.
For an american to make it at Juve, Barca, or Madrid or Milan, he is going to have to be rediculously good. Freddy is going to have to go to Chelsea or Man U or Arsenal. He should go to England. It is pretty hard for an english speaker to play in these leagues. But I think our first player to play for Barca will be a keeper. Our skill players will continue the streak of Holland, and England.
Rossi could go to Italy tho, he has mentioned playing for AC numerous times. He would have to have played for USA before he does this tho, because if he makes it back to Italy, it will be a done deal for him playing for them.

I read an interview of Damrcus Beasley in sports illustrated. He said he has fun at PSV but he says he hates the atmosphere. He said he is not allowed to listen to music before games or even talk. He also says that he doesn't live in a very safe environment. so who knows, maybe he will want to leave.

I would definitely agree with the others that have mentioned Onyewu. He is a MONSTER physically. Decent speed and great in the air. I think he is about a year away from playing at one of the TOP clubs. My opinion is that he just needs to curb his card collecting habits a bit (mental) and improve on the ball a bit. I think he is very close to the TOP level of play.

Ya I agree with oguchi. I think that Eddie Johnson will be one too. Its too bad he didn't go to Benfica when he had the chance, I think he burnt out a little bit. But he can come back.
Joshinho
Nov 8 2005, 09:53 AM
I think Eddie Johnson has the potential to get to that level but he is further away than Onyewu in my opinion. Missing more or less the whole season certainly didn't help matters for him either at this developmental stage of his career. EJ is fast, tall and has a good nose for goal, but he is still rough on the edges. Onyewu is very close to the top level imo. He just needs to be a bit smarter with his physical play to decrease his card collection & he needs to improve his touch on the ball a little.
Exciting times for us though to have so much young talent (compartively to a few years ago!).

Onyewu to Middlesborough? This article states so:
http://www.people.co.uk/sport/football/tm_...-name_page.htmlQUOTE
MIDDLESBROUGH are putting the finishing touches to a stunning £2 million raid for United States World Cup centre-lf Oguchi Onyewu.
Chairman Steve Gibson has negotiated a deal for the 24-year-old giant, who plays for
Belgian side Standard Liege, and will complete the move in the next few weeks.
Gibson is busy in the transfer market for managerless Boro and his next boss will have at least one top player lined up.
Onyewu has been capped more than a dozen times by the highly-ranked Americans and is expected to start in their side when they begin their World Cup campaign.
The 6ft 4 in powerhouse defender has coped ell with Belgian football and Boro's spies believe he will be a hit in the Premiership because of his strength and tough attitude.
Onyewu grew up in Washington of Nigerian parents but headed to Europe and had a spell with Metz in France before moving to Belgium.
Several Premiership clubs have checked him out, ut Boro are set to swoop with a deal worth bout £25,000 a week for Onyewu, who would probably replace Ugo Ehiogu in their squad. he deal was originally put in motion by chief scout Donald Mackay and Gibson has stepped in despite his club being in managerial limbo.
Gibson has also been working on a deal for Chelsea's unsettled Robert Huth. The player's agent has had talks with Boro and may accept their offer, worth £30,000 a week plus extras.
Wigan had agreed to pay Chelsea's £5.5m asking price but Huth turned them down.
Meanwhile, Gibson is lobbying Premier League chairmen for support to name Gareth Southgate as his next boss.
Gibson knows he needs a dozen supporters to appoint unqualified Southgate as his new manager - and he has got to work already.
Boro are ready to fight for the right to name their skipper as the head of a coaching team which includes experienced men such as Steve Round and Steve Harrison.
And Gibson wants the backing of the same men who let Glenn Roeder take charge of Newcastle - with their vote vital if he is to succeed. Southgate is up for the job and is going to start taking his coaching badges.

I'm kind of mixed about it. Sure, he'll be playing in the Premiership, and a smaller club like Boro might make the adjustment easier and let him get in the lineup from the get-go. Another side of me thinks 2 million is a steal for Gooch and he could have gone to a bigger more prestigious club, especially after a good WC performance.

I agree...I think it is a steal! But I also think it might be easier to transition. Moving straight from Standard Liege to a team like Man Utd. or AC Milan is a HUGE leap. I think an intermediary step will be good for him. If he stays injury free...I don't think he'll be at Boro more than a year. Definitely not more than 2 years.

I think the player that has the most potential to do well internationally is Dononvan. Many don't know that he is holding his career back by playing in the MLS, I know it sounds harsh but its the reality of it. If this guy was playing for one of the big English or Spanish teams he would be a bigger star than what he is now...at least he would increase the respect internationals have for American players.

ya, Donovan is picky though. He will only play in England and Spain, and it has to be a some what decent club. If he would have put in his dues at Leverkusen, he would be getting looks from big clubs now. But the idea of paying alot of money for an MLS player can be scary to some clubs.

RUSSELL MAKES VIBORG SWITCH
Greg Seltzer for Yanks Abroad Monday, July 17, 2006
Rosenborg defender Robbie Russell has completed a transfer to Danish top flight side Viborg, where he immediately inked a two-and-half-year deal.
The right back only featured in two 2005 contests for the Trondheim giants and has made the jump in order to secure more first team action.
"I really like the players here and I like the club," Russell told YA. "It was time for me to make a change."
Viborg press officer Peter Henriksen confirmed that the acquisition did require a transfer fee, but was not at liberty to reveal the figure in question.
Russell will team up with another newly signed Yank, attacker Joe Zewe, on the Greens.
The two have been running the right side together in preseason friendlies, and Russell admitted that it was a happy first for him.
"It's nice to have another American around," he said. "I think it's the first time in my career I've been able to have an American as a teammate."
Russell was drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy out of Duke University, but opted to join Norwegian club Sogndal instead.
After making his name with the Fosshaugane Campus outfit, the Massachusetts native earned the move to Rosenborg.
Russell immediately became the starter, but a knee injury and a coaching change pushed him down the depth chart.

LIEGE, Belgium (AP) - United States defender Oguchi Onyewu will stay at Standard Liege, despite offers to move to English Premier League team Middlesbrough.
Onyewu will stay with Standard at least until the end of the year, Belgian sports news Web site Sport.be reported Friday. The U.S. international has one more year left on his contract with the Belgian club.
Onyewu had been in contact with Middlesbrough to discuss a possible move, however he reportedly turned down an offer because some details in the contract were not agreed upon.
The English club was impressed by the 24-year-old defender's performance at this year's World Cup in Germany.

Hopefully Standard can shock us all and make a deep run in Champions League. More teams need to see him, I am afraid he is being dismissed for giving up the US goals at the World Cup. I think we can only blame him for the second Czech goal, I will never be convinced that was actually a PK in the Ghana, and hell he played in a three man back for 10 minutes against the Italians.

Clint Dempsey and MLS player development
Players on MLS development squads must really love playing soccer. At least, that's the implication from "Economics 101 for young MLS players", by Bob Holtzman:
These players might be considered cheapskates in some sports. But in Major League Soccer, they're more like poor college students who can't afford to pass up a freebie.
That's life as part of the Galaxy's developmental roster, where players can make as little as $11,700 per year on an non-guaranteed contract.
Developmental players for Chivas USA and the Galaxy consider their economic situation a serious challenge in the South Bay, where the cost of living is as high as anywhere in the country. Players room with teammates, clubs turn a cold shoulder to league rules to help and athletes still take handouts from relatives to keep alive their dream of being professional soccer players.
And these players have to do it in the South Bay, where so many of their peers are soaking up rays at the beach before hitting the nearby bars at night.
"Food before partying, you know?" said Galaxy defender Kyle Veris, a 23-year-old rookie earning $16,500 after being drafted in the second round. "Girls are another struggle. I have to ask Mom and Dad. I tell them I met a girl and need money to take her out."
Now, when you get good, seeing as you've been paid a pittance in the meantime, it would seem that you don't owe MLS that much. But that's not the way MLS is playing it with Clint Dempsey, who is attracting interest from England. Grant Wahl writes:
No American had a better World Cup than Dempsey, who brought much-needed pace and confidence to the right side of the U.S. midfield starting with the team's 1-1 tie against world champion Italy. Dempsey currently makes only slightly more than $80,000 a year in his deal with MLS, which runs through the end of 2007.
"Clint Dempsey is a valuable player, and we'd like to renegotiate his agreement and keep him in the league," MLS commissioner Don Garber told me last week. "Unless these clubs offer his real value and don't discount the value he has to MLS, we have no interest."
Wahl claims that MLS turned down an $1.5m offer from the EPL's Charlton Athletic for Dempsey. Perhaps that's because they expect a better offer from West Ham (see last paragraph), but that story is quite stale.
In Dempsey's case, MLS may be sending out a signal that they will be tough negotiators, and a deal may get done before the Aug. 31 transfer deadline. That's the most likely scenario, however much MLS would like to keep their hands on Dempsey.
The alternative - if Dempsey is indeed worth more than $1.5m to MLS - implies I'm missing something about the value of talent to the league. That's a big gap between the transfer price and Dempsey's $80,000 salary, and Dempsey wants to learn his trade in a top league. Moreover, that's where Dempsey belongs - he's surely more valuable in just about every dimension playing in a better league. If MLS plays hardball with the players in Dempsey's situation, they'll end up creating their own hard core union to deal with once the money starts flowing into US soccer
.

MLS drives a tough bargain, they want Clint in the league, he is a big time player and they are riding his success in Germany still. Eventually he will be let go, but I don't think they would consider these moves mid season, maybe jan.
Conrad is a different story, I am not sure why they held on there. Let the guy go, hes had a good career and played well in germany. i bet he wants a shot at european soccer. he deserves it too. he might be in the wrong age for the next world cup so let him craft his skill a bit more in europe.
EJ didn't get to go for 5 million, so 2 million might be a slap in the face to Garber. I think EJ is an MLS'er for life now.
Dempsey really wants to push himself to the next level, and i definitely applaud that. I wish him all the luck in the world when he gets his shot at england, and whatever club he lands at *cough* reading *cough* I will cheer them on.

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder has reached an agreement with Manchester United to take striker Giuseppe Rossi on loan until January as he looks to bolster his attacking options.
Rossi, 19, will compete with Obafemi Martins and Shola Ameobi for a place in Roeder's starting lineup following Michael Owen's long-term knee injury suffered at the World Cup.
The Italy Under-21 international, who is not allowed to play against his parent club, was tipped to feature in some capacity for United this season following impressive performances last term and Ruud van Nistelrooy's move to Real Madrid.
However, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to let American-born Rossi play at St James' Park in a deal which will run out on the first day of next year, with Louis Saha, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Wayne Rooney his attacking options at the moment.
A statement on the Newcastle website, www.nufc.co.uk, confirmed: "Newcastle have reached an agreement with Manchester United to take striker Giuseppe Rossi on loan.
"As a condition of all loan deals between Premiership clubs, however, he will be prevented from playing for the Magpies in any meetings with the Red Devils."
Rossi, whose mentor at Old Trafford was Van Nistelrooy, scored at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland last season before netting against Barnet and Burton in cup competitions.
Ferguson, who signed Rossi from Italian side Parma, believes the striker will improve after a spell on loan.
"It was a big decision for us especially as we don't have the choice of strikers," Ferguson told United's official website www.manutd.com.
"But this is something that Giuseppe wanted as he needs regular first-team football. When he returns, he will be a more experienced player who will be able to offer us much more."
