I guess it has something to do with the whole "next Jordan", "next whoever" thing + the spectacular play in general. Small guys can decide games in various ways, such as with great drives, great passes or big clutch shots like a three at the buzzer.
Big man on the other hand like Amare or Howard play spectacular as well but it seems like a hard worked basket in the zone or a game winning block isn't as much appreciated as e.g. a game winning spectacular drive / three ball by a smaller player. It's a media thing but to be fair, the small guys can't run the show alone and with great big man getting rare probably, the teams who have players like Howard or Amare might have a decent shot on the championship in the future.
Btw, Dallas won again last night, 10-4 for the season now, glad they recovered well from the bad start.
You make good points but I feel that if little guys could dominate the league "by themselves" then right now the Sixers, Nets, Heat, Pistons would still be atop the standings. Michael Jordan has been an exception in recent history, a guard that could lead his team to titles without an effective big man. Look at all the other teams in the past, they centered around big guys, be it Hkeem the Dream, Big Shaq, David Robinson, Tim Duncan.
I still feel that the fundamental of basketball is to get the ball down low for the big guy to run the show whether it by taking on a double-team and freeing shooters or by scoring in the paint. The most dominant players in the past -Michael Jordan aside- have predominantly been 7feet tall players.
Howard and Stoudemire are monsters under the hoop, these are the players that can potentially become the most dominant forces in the NBA.
And LeBron James may well be that Jordan-esque exception, who knows

why do you think the US gets dominated in international play? the guards aren't quick enough and the big men can't shoot.
those are all big beat em up power forwards/centers and it seems like the nba rules have limited their defensive abilites along with perimeter defending (ie hand checks), so the small quick guards can excell in this game and the big men battle it out for the rebound.
granted the smaller players are flashier as well
True but had Garnett/Duncan been there, it would have been different.
I also feel that part of the problem is that the art of 3-point shooting seems to be lost on the US Team, Arenas/James/Anthony all these guys are slashers, not fantastic shooters (no Reggie Millers at least).
Then there's also the problem of the zone...
