sorry for all teh downtime today ladies and gents, seems we had a server hiccup/possible attack, i have put a server limit on so that the forum will try to stay up, but if the server limit gets to high it will turn people away.. its that or straight broken.
again, sorry for the inconvienence this may cause. We are working out finances to purchase a secondary server to stop this from happening.

It is possible, the server was being put under considerable stress due to an unexpected spike in traffic. Under normal traffic, the server handles just fine. If it spikes to levels like that again, it may crash. This machine alone will not be able to handle such high load without having to turn some people away to maintain stabilitiy.

I dont think this is any of my bussines.. but maybe it's because of the arcade....

Nov 20 2005, 04:12 PM
No, I mentioned this to Chris, and this was a one day thing due to traffic and not the arcade. The arcade hasn't caused any problems that we have noticed since it went up at the beginning of the month.

Perhaps it can be done without until the server is upgrading.

To say you get SP and all it's features absolutely free, I think you should have a little more respect for the owners of the site, and stop being so selfish and acting like the site owes you something. Things are being done to alleviate the problem, just be patient.

It seems after every big game ie Barca v Real or today West Ham v United the site goes down. It's very annoying and I for one would not mind putting my hand in my pocket and paying a subscripton if it meant the site didn't go down all the time. I'm sure others would feel the same.
Or falling that, how about at busy times limiting the site to users with over 300 posts or something? Cut out the lurkers who don't contribute anything, except to leech videos etc?

the issue within that is that subscriptions alienate people who cannot pay due to age. a post limit also would work for a week or two, but then the leechers would post 300 posts of "repost link" or "thanks" or other meaningless things until they hit 300, at which point we are back to where we are. I am currently working on the finances of sp, and hope to announce a second server soon.

Just a shame we have so many leachers that contribute nothing to the site, just take all the videos.

I've spent the better part of 4 hours reviewing logs and making a few behind the scenes changes to the servers operation today. Whether it will have made the server more stable or not remains to be seen.
As for donations, I don't see that happening because it would have very little success. If you want to support the site, click on an advertising link if any of the ad links are of any interest to you. They create revenue for the site, and do not cost you as a visitor anything except a moment of your time.

How do we know if donations will be unsuccessful without trying? I personally am willing to donate some money. Other people will also try to do the same I hope. I say, start a donation thingy. Nothing bad comes out of it and everything good could come out of it.

I would prefer to not make the members feel as though they need to do something to keep teh site alive. The server has been pushed to its limits recently by bots trying to force their way into the server. I think now that we have a plan in place to stop that, things will be smoother.

SP WOULD neva work if it was on subscribers...^^^ whoever said that is some rich dude imo.
Most of the members are not earning an income to pay for a site!
If i was earning huge amounts of cash a month i would donate but im not.
I thank you for SP and your attitude in not having to make us users pay for this brilliant site.
Btw - i am on dialup and have come to realise that SP is always off during big games mainly. La Liga and big EPL games especially.
Thanks for all the efforts man

I think the arcade is great to have, but it might have a great part on the server load.

The subject has been discussed many times by frstplce, the games are not a cause of the downtime, thus there is no need to ban them for a week.

all this server stuff is to do with space right?
it crashes cos there is not enough space.
well i was just thinking, what if whenever a topic was made, the topic at the bottom the page deletes?
then there would be more space.
would this help, and if so, is it possible.

It's nothing to do with space on the server. As far as I understand it's due to so many people trying to access the forums at one time, it's overloading the server. Think of when you computer runs slowly because your running too many programs and thats the same concept, only the server is being so overloaded, it's causing it to stall and crash. And as Chris said a little further up the thread, the bots didn't exactly help next week.
