I don't think anything was lost with this thread, but anyway. Ben Cousins has been suspended for 12 months from the AFL. Fair decision, I hope he come back in 2009 and can start his career up again.

Some have been saying it was a bit harsh but I guess it had to be done. Will be interesting to see what he does now as he'll have so much free time so it will be harder in some ways to beat the addiction as he won't have to worry about football or being fit. AFL will still be checking up on him everyone once in a while though apparently.

I was hoping we'd pick up Cale Morton with pick number 2, but I've heard fantastic things about Cotchin as well. Don't know much about the other Richmond picks though.

Interesting to see Dew get picked up. Think he may struggle but he could be good and the Hawks need a bit of experience. Some interesting names who are already involved with AFL got selected like Westhoff, Ebert, Selwood, Motlop and a few others so the talent must run in the family.

What do people think of the Victoria v The Dream Team concept that has been announced for next year?
Over here in SA seems not many people like it as it's victorian bias and the game will only mean something to the victorians and the dream team players won't be able to experience the same passion.
I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes and hope the dream team can get one over the vics.

They had to have had Victoria because what other team would there have been? Half of all footballers come from Victoria and it's going to be played at the G(obviously). But apart from that, I'm really excited that it's going to happen. I'll be there and hopefully no one will miss it as if the teams are at their strongest, it will be a match to remember.
There's Only One United
Nov 27 2007, 11:40 PM
I think they wanted Victoria v SA (but i think SA got smashed last time) from what I've been hearing or that if they were going to do it properly should've had WA and a system where everyone plays each other but because of the schedule that's not possible. I don't think anyone argued that Victoria shouldn't have been there but just that they are the only state when there are others such as SA and WA who could put up a reasonable game. The debate is mainly coming from old SA players though so obviously they'll feel strongly about it.
I don't mind having the dream team concept as it should make for a very entertaining match.

Shocking news about Nathan Ablett
"The Herald Sun believes the 21-year-old has tired of the fanfare and commitments of AFL football."
How many years has he played for? Don't see how he could be tired of it as if you train hard for all those years and then want to quit once you've made it seems a bit odd. But if he has personal problems and doesn't want to play well fair enough, you can't force him. As long as he doesn't do a Mal Michael by retiring and then joining another club

He never really wanted to play in the first place. He seems like a properly well adjusted kid, it takes a lot to walk away from something like that.
He's not really that good anyway, not a great kick, an ok mark but nothing special. Once Tom Hawkins really starts to fire Ablett won't have a place in the side with Mooney, Hawkins and Ottens (occasionally) patrolling the forward line. When that happens he'd either have to settle for playing in the reserves or move which I don't think he'd be too keen on.

AFL rejects Roos' proposal
The AFL has rejected the Kangaroos' proposal for a 12-month stay on committing to a Gold Coast move.
The AFL has told a press conference in Melbourne it has to act now to establish a presence on the Gold Coast, and has offered a multi-million dollar incentive package to the Kangaroos.
And unless the Kangaroos agree to accept the package and base themselves in the region by 2010, the AFL's offer could be withdrawn.
The AFL's decision will hurry on proceedings to have a permanent presence on the Gold Coast sooner rather than later, which could include the granting of a 17th licence.
The AFL's decision could prompt tumult within the Kangaroos, as they will be forced now into deciding whether to relocate or stay in Melbourne.
Thousands of Kangaroos fans are expected to attend a club information session and will doubtless make their voices heard.
The pro-Melbourne faction of the Kangaroos board had wanted the club to be given another year to see whether it could become profitable at its Arden Street base in North Melbourne before deciding on the Gold Coast offer.
If the Kangaroos decide to relocate, they could incur the wrath of members and supporters, many of whom are fiercely opposed to moving.
But if the Kangaroos opt to stay in Melbourne, then the AFL is likely to pursue other avenues to have a presence on the Gold Coast.
That could include granting a licence to QAFL side Southport Sharks to become the AFL's 17th team, or entertaining proposals from other clubs to establish some sort of presence in the region.
Collingwood and St Kilda have already expressed some interest in playing games on the Gold Coast.
The AFL has asked the Kangaroos board to consider its offer and come back with a final decision.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the Kangaroos board had indicated it would make a final decision soon, but could not give a deadline.
Demetriou said the league would respect the Kangaroos' right to remain in Melbourne, but said the league could not afford to wait to strike on the Gold Coast.
"The signs are all strong that our code is an excellent position to establish itself on the Gold Coast," Demetriou said.
"As a code we also had to take into account the threat from other sporting codes and the inroads that they were making into the Gold Coast region, one of Australia's fastest-growing regions."
The Kangaroos played home and away games on the Gold Coast last season and will do so in 2008.
"But for the continued health and growth of our game, we need to know at the start of the 2008 year if we will be continuing to work with the Kangaroos to build their presence in the Gold Coast market, or if we need to begin the work on alternative plans to establish a team on the Gold Coast.
"We will not close the door on the Kangaroos.
"But we do, as a code, need to push on and explore the options."
The AFL maintains its relocation package is of $100 million.
However supporters group We Are North Melbourne claims the package is closer to $45 million given the club would get allocations from the AFL regardless of whether it moved."

Welsh isn't very tall is he? It's confusing that the Bulldogs didn't go for anyone in any of the drafts who was an out-and-out tall. They should have picked up a tall forward with their first pick in the draft. It just goes to show how shit some of the football departments are in some teams(Bulldogs, Richmond, Carlton etc...)

Interesting to see the Socceroos turn to the AFL and poach one of their best coaches. He seemed to be well respected and likes football so it should be a good move. William's would be pissed off though as they've lost a few members of the coaching staff since the grand final.

Power fitness coach to join Socceroos
Choco had to amend his wish list on Thursday afternoon when fitness coach Darren Burgess dropped a pre-Christmas bombshell and resigned from the club.
Burgess, who was credited with pushing the Power to another level physically in 2007, will take up the newly created role of fitness and conditioning coach with the Socceroos.
"We're disappointed,” Williams said on Friday.
“Burgo's a great part of our organisation and we were very pleased to get him in the first place. We knew he had a great affiliation with soccer, so it's a real feather in his cap and ours to know the first full-time fitness person appointed for the soccer team has come from Port Adelaide.”

I'm not even going to pretend to be optimistic about Richmonds chances next year. I think we still have the worst squad in the AFL, the only stand outs in my opinion being Foley, Brown, Deledio and (once he's got a bit of match practice) Couglan. I think McMahon will do pretty well though. It will be a struggle to not repeat last seasons 16th place finish.
I am, however, looking forward to the start of the new season. Can't wait to see some of the new draftees in action and some big player at new clubs.
