Hello kids
welcome to my long awaited, long planned and long overdue segment: is it a sport?
Whats this about? Well every week (or so) I will chose a different pseudo-sport and we'll discuss if it really is a sport or not. This is the first topic and its just a test run, if we get enough replies we'll make it weekly, if not we'll trash it and act like it never happened. The sports have already been chosen but feel free to make any suggestions.
This week sport is NASCAR.
I dont have to make too much of an argument regarding this shit. All I would have to do is paste Shearers argument from the "boring sports" thread. How can you call anything that requires the movement of the right leg a sport? these cars arent even fast enough to require fast reflexes, you want fast? then take F1, dont come around with Stock cars! I can get a friggin stock car at a friggin rent a car place. Besides the fact that only Rednecks seem to enjoy NASCAR. What do you guys think?

For once i'm going to not be slanted agaisnt Nascar because i'm a whole-hearted motorsports fans.
Yes, it may look boring to watch on TV. The thought of having some cars just race around an oval for 3 hours may seem dumb but how much of the misconception is influenced by the redneck hatred? A lot. Tons actually. If Nascar was taking whole heartedly by sporting chaps in Britain and other parts of Europe then it defintely would not be as hated. Because of all the redneck hatred (its common even i do it sometimes) it is easy to place that hatred to a sport like Nascar because the common generilization is that only rednecks like Nascar.
However, if you're being serious then you have to open your eyes and separate the redneck hatred from the sport itself. Nascar racing certainly is not the most challenging form of motorsports out there but that does not mean that it is challenging and certainly doesn't mean that there is no skill involved.
Certainly, many of us can be strapped into a Nascar and take a couple of laps around a track at 170 mph. IT is going to be exhilirating, i don't see how you can be agaisnt that.
Now when you place 30 drivers in 700 hp, +3000 pound vehicles that are going +180 mph it gets hectic and takes some certain gusto. For many it is tough to appreaciate all the factors involved until someone has a chance to get in there while all the chaos is happening.
Many of these guys aren't exactly crappy drivers either. For instance, Earndhart Jr. also drives in Rolex sports car series and participates in other road racing events like 24 hours of Le mans. Jeff Gordon got a chance to test Montoya's F1 car and do some laps. Turns out he wasn't too off the pace and Mr. Williams himself would seriously consider signing Jeff if they could afford him.
I enjoy Nascar jokes and shots just as much as the next guy but in all seriousness, don't let all those jokes get to your head.

I don't consider anything where there isn't a lot of physical activity a sport.
Hence, NASCAR isn't a sport because the car does the work.
Horse Racing isn't a sport IMO because the horse does the majority of the work.
Same reason Chess and Poker aren't sports, there's no physical work to be done.
Of course the line is drawn somewhere but that's how I see it.
I put them in three categories:
Sport, Race, Game
Sport is where you run or at least use the muscles a bit.
Race is where you drive something.
Game is where you sit on your ass.

So would cycling is barely a sport? The cyclist has to pedal but the bicycle has to do the work to transition the force exerted by the human to the wheels thus making them rotate.
the bicycles running gears are doing more then %50 percent of the work (give or take) and because the workload or physical activity for the human is reduced thanks to the gers, chains, etc, that makes cycling barely a point.
I think the line would be drawn according to the definition of 'a lot of physical activity'.

well, in cycling you are pedaling for a very long time(at least at the pro level) and in NASCAR you are turning the wheel and pushing the gas pedal. I agree with shutout for the most part.
BTW, is hunting a sport?

Yeah that's the way I used to see it but I'm having second thoughts.
But I do know that I would never consider NASCAR a sport.

Right, but in cycling the running gears of the bike are transitioning the force exerted by the human to wheel. In Nascar the engine is producing the horsepower and torque which is dictated by the drivers feet. That obviously is no comparison when the issue is physical activity but when you add the hot temperature of the vehicle 30 other drivers, etc, all that mumbo jumbo it can be grueling. I could make the same sentence i just made but utilize it with cycling.
Way i see it, cycling is a sport as much as Nascar is and both are sports just different forms requiring different characteristics.

You turn right you crash. I bet that if you invert a track one time on these guys they'll all start crashing and shit. Then youd get some "duh, someone got went turned the track around..."
But this is "is it a sport: nascar" dont worry about cycling, shooting, we'll get to those in the upcoming weeks.
