some of you will now notice that posts have links auto inserted into them. This is a new ad format we are trying out for the next month, and if it works well, will continued to be used. this ad format is called intellitxt. It parses the content on a page, and then determines what country you, the viewer, are from. It will then create links out of certain keywords relevant to the content and where you live. so someone in elngland may get an ad about old trafford tickets when visiting the man utd forum, where as a canadian would get a link to buy gear instead.
the links are not intrusive, they are a subtle ad format, and arent annoying. they contain no popups and no hidden code. at max you should get 4 or 5 per page spread out, but you may get one or 2 or none at all.
this new ad format is going to help us get teh second server we desperately need.
thanks for your time.
PS these ads will NEVER show up in your profile info to teh left of a post.

we look for only non-intrusiv ad mediums. basically, barring a massive company giving us a 5 digit paycheck, you wont see any massive ads. google ads, where they are now, and these little links. that is my planned extensiveness for ads. I dont like them either, but realize its needed.
hence why sp doesnt have pop ups, or annoying mouseover talk ads, etc.

Well it seems the ads either don't work on certain systems or it is due to the target features of the ads. If they have any ads for keywords that are set to appear for only certain countries and you aren't in one of them, you won't see ads. Or so that is what I've been told. I've never seen ads yet myself, it just seems to stall loading the script. Ah well, if it's working for others I can't complain.

i think they are quite cool and the second server is essential.
whats that stuff at the bottom of the page next to where it says lo-fi version?
and would it also be possible for members to make some of their own links?

You don't have to worry about that, it's just debugging info I enabled so I can monitor the load on the server right from the forum.

thanks, was wondering what GZIP meant???
frstplce
Dec 5 2005, 06:30 AM
GZip is a compression algorithm used to compress the pages lightly before they are sent to the viewer. Cuts down on the size of the page that needs to be transferred and saves a bit of bandwidth in the process.
Anyway, this is getting off topic now, so let's keep the discussion on the ad program. If you have other questions, please feel free to message me or open a topic in the Account Support forum.
Thanks.

Another question, does soccerpulse gain from us just clicking the ads?

the ads are a bit annoying when your cursor goes over them but I suppose if they help to keep Soccerpulse running I am all for it

Yes. For every click SP gets just that little bit extra cash.

seriosly!
so if these things are automatic, why dont someone just make a topic, pin it, and fillit with the words that can be made into ads and people just click them?

Well, for two good reasons actually. One, that would basically be cheating, and a quick way to lose an advertiser. Two, the system limits loading to 7 keywords per page.

If the changes are for a second server then I'm all for it, it doesn't make that much of a change to posting or viewing the site so it's great.

permanently.. so far the response has been great, the revenue its generating is good, and can only help the site. I dont think one complaint compared to 15 or so positive responses warrants them being taken down.
