according to www.soccernet.com Sven-Goran Eriksson has said 3 teams he would like to aviod in the world cup finals is holland australia and USA. that is a really great thing for us soccer that a world power country like england says a thing like that .............do u think that the power houses of soccer r finally starting to become a little worried about us cuz it clearly looks that way now???? ........thats really a big step for the usa team

I think "worried" is a bit overstated. However,, given the choice between facing USA or any of {T&T, Costa Rica, Japan, or Saudi Arabia}, I think most coaches would rather face any from the brackets than the USA.

Certainly, USA, Korea & Iran are the "strong" teams of our group. I think an honest coach would tell you he'd rather not draw any of those three. It is nice to have weaker teams in the group so you can at least consider resting some players.

He didn't call the USA a world soccer power as such. He was a bit worried because teams like Australia and USA may raise their game to beat the English.

Eriksson admits he would rather avoid the "English speaking countries" such as Australia and the United States.

"They are desperate to beat England in a big tournament, which is why I don't want to play them,"

From a swedish newspaper:

USA on the other hand has been forged together and continued to developed. They won their group ahead of mexico thanks to a tempo strong football that is the future.

Eddie Pope was interviewed in the article too
QUOTE
- Name against name, the other team often look better, but we still have faith in ourselves that we don't fear anyone. We're convinced that we will every game we play. Last time we reached quarterfinal in 02, and we would be very disappointed if we didn't repeat that. To be honset I would be disappointed if we don't reach the semis.

I think we are getting more respect. I mean Portugal thought they would roll us in 2002.
