anyone who gets cut and is depressed (like me) listen to this, on the ginga documentary one of the people it featured was a brazilian boy who had been cut 21 times from flamengo, he kept trying until the 22nd time he made it, so don't give up!!!

I was benched when I got recruited to a better team (they paid for my schooling in High School).
I was a freshman then, so I was the new kid on the block.. after a few games and practices I got my chance, and it worked out after all.
So keep your chin up, work 3 times as hard as the starters, and always play with a ball on your free time, juggle, kick against a wall, do whatever.. it can only improve you.

anyone who hasnt been dropped from the team isnt playing at a high enough level.
everyone should experience being dropped or benched early on in their career. that way, you will find out where you are in football and how to handle being disappointed.

About 5 seasons ago I joined a new team 2 age groups up and so wasn't expecting to start but I cam off the bench playing as a second striker...I got two assists and a goal.
I was told by our assistant coach "You desserve to be starting if you can keep performances like that up". I remeber this because I told it to my asisstant before I quit.
Anyway I was the best player in training and scoring and gettting assists week in week out and not starting so I spoke to the assistant and he said he's speak to the manager...
By the end of the season I had scored 18 goals coming off the bench along with over 30 assists and I had only started 1 game when our 2 main strikers were injured.
I spoke to the asisstant and he said I would be a starting player next season for sure.
So next I didn't start the first game and talked ot my manager who explained I wasn't good enough to start. This to me was bull crap. I had been the best player in the team...although not the best player I had played better and was consistant.
I had an arguement with him...can't remember what was said exactly but it was mainly about how I desserved to be starting.
I moved teams and scored a hatrick against my old team and we beat them 6-1...which topped it off.

I was benched one time in a match we were losing bigtime. My coach didn't like me anyways but then I was benched because I was "not fitting into the tactic". Strange about his tactic was that it was kick and dash and I was and am still the best sprinter of my team. Anyways we lost that match 0-4 because we had to many loose balls etc.

My school teacher is a w****r he dropped me to the bench because apparently i tackled too hard, his objection was when he was young he broke his leg so doesnt like hard tacklers, my team then lost their winning streak crashed out in a quater final cuo match we shud have won and went on an 11 game loosing streak with me not playing a minute, i quit the team around 2 months ago and we havent won since, i try not to laugh lol. Also when i was like 10 i was really small for my age so didnt really have the physical attributes to play so i only played around 5 mins a game. This i feel is my reason for success at present because i wanted to prove to myself at 16 and 5 foot 4 i can still compete and win. Which i can.

I was benched last season because I didn't do what the coach wanted me to do. He's one of those coaches where if you like to mess with people you get benched. I mean try to nutmeg people and stuff all the time. I'm very good at dribbling and I don't barely ever get the ball stolen from me. It pissed me off so much.

I was moved up from my clubs 'B' team to the 'A' team and from the start the coach never really gave me a chance, he made me play outside defense which I had never played before. After the season i was cut and I was so depressed that I thought about quitting soccer. Then I found this website, started watching comps of players like CR7 and Henry and since then I haven't had a day without soccer. I made a new club team that just beat my old team 4-0 and I have become a better player than anyone on my old team. I have all of my new teams respect and the players on my old team are begging me to come back. It is a great feeling.
Don't let riding the bench get you down. If you work hard and love the game then opportunities will come your way whether it is playing time for your current team or a spot on a new team. Just don't be discouraged if success isn't handed to you.

I tried out for my high school team but never made it b/c my stamina level wasn't high enough. What sucks is the fact that the guys who did make the team sucked major ass, which lead to no wins and all losses that year. I've been quite bitter until the day I was playing recreationally and got scouted by a club coach. I'm a starter but because of my stamina problem, I get subbed out late game.

in the season before last i was top scorer in a struggling under 18's side and really thought i deserved a chance in the reserve side, when i got the call up i was as happy as can be! only for when i turned up to play on a saturday, i was told not that i was playing, but i should stand by the gate and take the money on the gate!!! the cheek of them!!! but so determined to play for my home town first team, i went to university, became top scorer for the first team, and now(tommorow) i will be trialing for the 1st team!! wish me luck guys!

wow man good luck for that. i
when i was i think 13 i got picked for the regional team and then cut at the last minute because one of the coaches thought i wasnt big enough!!! i didnt let it get me down and trained so much harder than before now all the players that were in that team suck, and im bigger than them too haha
so never get sad because you get cut or benched, use it as inspiration to try harder than the other players, and you will surely become better than them and take their place.

I have a similar problem in that because of my fitness levels I often get benched at halftime or after about 10 or 15 minutes into the 2nd half. I also don't get along with my coach very well but thats another issue. It upsets me a lot because I know I put a lot more effort and time into improving myself as a player than most or all of the rest of the team do. Hopefully I can just work through it... its a bit of an education being on the bench. It makes you realise that you have to do your best while your out there, and that maybe you need to work even harder to make sure your on the pitch for the whole 90. We've only got 2-5 games left this season, and after I finish my HSC I'm taking the year off, working, and devoting myself to football pretty much full time next year. I know it will be different next year when that coach is gone and I have fixed up my physical problems.

well my freshman year in high school i made the jv team, which wasnt very hard considering everyone made it. but during my time i was a dependable midfield through the season. Then i became a starting forward my sophomore year until the last few games before i left the team when i was on a scoring slump. then after, i got injured and i left the team. now this year, i hope to make varsity starting forward.

i am a right midfielder and for a couple of seasons in a row i was often on the bench. each game when i came off the bench i would always be playede in defence. one day when the right midfielder was ill they played me i right mid and i got man of the match and an assist. since that game they always played me in right mid but i quit at the end of the season to move to a bigger club that my previous manager told me i would hardly get any games for. i start nearly every game now.

our manager does the rotation thing, sorta...which i hate, cos i hate being sub, even if its for one game, but then i think about the other players who are like always sub, an i cant imagine how much they hate it cos at u'17s, theres no reserve team for them to play in so some just end up on the bench constantly. bit harsh.

Happened to me last year on High School JV team. I was slow, but I knew what to do, and half the other players didn't. I nearly scored when I played, because I knew what to do and where to go. Oh, and I've gotten a lot faster since then, so I have a chance at starting for JV and subbing for varsity.

I once got cut from a provincial team, but this was because I was being a 'prick'. The coach even told me this. I didn't listen very often and played around while he was talking. This is the thing that afects my game the most - my ego.

Im not realy bieng benched at the moment but im not getting my chance to prove myself in my best/Natural position.
The last 2 game si have played at RB and Left Midfield.
Im a bloody CF
I just have to get on with it but i hate it, i know i can do so much more in CF roll than what we currently have. But im never given the chance to prove it since i returned from a long term injury last season.
Its basicaly cos the Manager dont think im as good as the other forwards obviosly but he sees me teaching them tricks whenever we have a training session FFS.
Last season i was on the bench alot in the earlier part of the season (to protect my knee) I mean WTF i didnt want protecting i didnt need it i need match fitness in my natural position instead of waiting for my knee to be stronger i had already waited 13 bloody months. And i hate it when your looking out at other players doing a job that you know you can and will do better.
I think im gonna remind him that i had 8goals in 6games prior to my Injury. Unlike last season were i just kept my mouth shut and got pissed off.

well I've been bench once for about 3 matches this season.....missed training without excuses but got my place back as they were stuggling to create chances, we normally win with about 4 nil but though they won without me( 1-0 victories), my teammates were complaining..so after a month, got my place back.

I was benched first game and stopped caring about my team, I still tried hard in practice and all but sometimes got lazy and try sumthing stupid in training and my coach would get pissed. I know I am better than most my tam, most of them were walk ons because our team didn't have enough high level players, and my coach was desperate and gave it to whoever could pay for the team, so my team was stuck with rich snobby kids who suck. I played every game though for about 70 minutes, but my coach would rather start the kid whos dad comes to practice and has good conversation with him, all the kids who he can communicate in Spanish with, the kid who has trouble running 2 laps, and the team managers son, all polititcs

Quite a common problem for players in Britain is having flair and the ability to do tricks! As the British lads will know, football in the UK is more about 2-3 touches, pass and move e.t.c Coaches dont seem to appreciate and sort of skill. Iam the only player on my team that can do 100+ Keepieups. Most o the lads cant even balance the ball on their foot! Last season my coach barely played me for one whole match last season, soley on the fact sometimes i choose not to pass and beat a player or showboat. This season i have tried to pass at better times and showboat when i need to. Which actually allows me to do more skill as last season when i actually came on, i was scared to express myself as i was trying to prove why i should be in the team!
This season i have played for the whole match in practically every game and now hold down a permenent place on the team. I also feel i could be up for player of the season award!

ive been benched once...and it was for stupid reasons...it was for like a game because i wasnt concentrating on the game...i had my mindset on other shit...but i came stronger...but its better to be benched than cut because when your bench u still have a chance to come back and play than a guy who is cut and has no chance...but if i was cut i would be pissed....

I didn't make the team last season, due to the stamina and technical reasons, but I got on great with the coach and he let me train and even be assistant coach. I learned a lot during that season, it kinda sucks sitting on the bench while all my friends were playing, but I knew that I wasn't good enough yet.
Then the guy who got picked before me quit two weeks before the school cup, by then there wasn't enough time for me to fit into the system, I wasn't involved in friendlies and team practices, only the technical ones.
This season however, all my friends and the coach said I had improved. I just hope I can make it in front of the freshmen though, they're sublimely talented...

3 years ago when i first came out of rec to club ball i was really good in rec but i was in a small town so i hadnt even heard of club ball just real kind i got to watch on tv. And the coach decided to give me a shot cuase even tho i was playin up a year and was on a team above my level basicaly i was the worse player on the team and he didnt have much faith by middle season tho i had been improoving just not that great i guess and we has the assisatant coach that was just disliking me becuase of my skill horibly and he told me i would never get any better or be anything so thats when I got really serious about it and i have goten so much better in the past 3 years you wouldnt belevie, i can beat to poeple in my highschool leauge who are gettin college scholarships only d2 and im a starting freshman on our team but thats not that hard and i also have switch clubs to one with a awsome coach. so i guess hard work beats out everything after all

First game of the season today and I was on the bench. Got told it was because I haven't been to as many training sessions in Pre-Season compared to a few others which is true as I've had to work overtime and that is part of the selection policy. Only thing which pissed my off was that one guy who had been to almost no training sessions in pre-season got to come on before me as it was a tactical move. Came on for the last 20 minutes after we went down 1-0 but after watching most of the game and our B team play before hand I was feeling quite tired and my as well have done something else all afternoon. Not a good start to the season but they said I'll be back starting next game and from then on so I guess from that perspective sitting on the bench today wasn't that bad as long as the coach keeps his word.

A year ago I played for my halls of residence at uni. I wouldn't say i was the best player in the team at the time , but in the squad I was regarded as a striker and I personally believe that I was the 2nd best striker in the squad (striker being my 2nd best position too), I turned up to training and 5 a side every week, i was always available if needed (which is why I was used as a substitute so often) but didn't get many goals because our team's style of play seemed to be passing it across the back 4, to the centre mids and then back to the defence again... not very productive.
Anyway, last 11 a side game of the season before a big inter-hall tournament, I lose rock paper scissors and end up in goal for the first half and the vast majority of the 2nd as well. I finally get let out of net and put up front and I score as well after keeping a clean sheet for the 75 mins or so I was in goal. The next week the 23 man squad for the tournament came out, and I wasn't there! Adding insult to injury I had been replaced by a bloke who never turned up to training or 5 a side, and his only skill was thumping the ball towards goal (not even placing them, just hoping they would go in). I was absolutely devastated and still resent that decision to this day and refuse to play for them whenever they get the team back together.
On the plus side, the team I managed this year played two 'friendlies' against them and won both games; and my new team appreciate me much more after I have played 3 games (all coming on as a sub so far - playing my 4th in a promotion playoff tomorrow) and we won 2 of them (1 game included 4 players from my old team) and lost the other narrowly - with me scoring in 2 of them.

last season i was the youngest on our team u18s, i was only just turning 16 in the state youth league. i was a sub most of the time but still played in 80% of the games i was fit for (had a bad year with injury). every thursday night we go to the club rooms and are told wether were are on the teamsheet for the weekend. so it is almost your fault if you dont play sometimes, maybe you didnt do well at training or out of form. but this is the way pro teams do it really.
this year i am vice captain and playing every game.

Just to add to my previous post, I was an unused substitute for my new team on Wednesday, and today I played for the opposition (the game didn't really mean anything and the opposition were 1 player short while we had 1 extra) and scored 1 and set up 2 goals. Hopefully that'l teach them to drop me
