Exactly what the title says. Why? I don't understand?

How can Nike, Adidas etc. justify the extra £10/20 or 30 pounds that us people in the U.k have to pay?
I mean take Nike Id for example, there selling id Nike Talaria III's (U.S) for $100 which is around £55 but for the U.k there £85. How come? Am I missing something here? Where has the extra £30 come from?
Also my local adidas here in the U.k are selling the new +50.6 Tunit comfort pack for £119 but a friend of mine in the U.S says he's seen them at his local sport shops for $170 around £99.
I don't understand where the extra price comes from?
Can someone enlighten me?

Its a phenomenon called "rip-off Britain". No seriously. SHould be some stuff on Google on it.
Here's how it breaks down. Typically, when a British store sells a product for £117.50:
* £17.50 is VAT
* £10 goes to the retail staff
* £6 goes to the retail land lord in rent
* £5 goes to the store as profit
* £79 goes to the manufacturer and distributor
Good article on it As for NikeID, they are just reflecting the list price of boots in Uk stores on their website (either that or they are exploiting us ruthlesly, but no, a big global corporation would never do that to their loyal customers would they...

)

Its the same with everything though - it started off with car prices.
They are expensive in other countries as well though - most notably Canada and Australia.

don't the shops has to pay to import the products? i guess they are putting the import tax on the consumer since the demand is inelastic(thought i would hit u with an economics term) for the products.

Our school is ok with it because our town is HUGE in American Football, except the freshman team went 1-8-1 while our Freshman Soccer team went 12-3-2 so whenever they talk shit we just bring that up and they can't say nothing.
I love being a frosh.

Surely that can't be true because vapors are made in Italy and surely it would cost more to ship to the U.S than to the U.K with the U.K being closer to Italy.

Try AU$350 for vap iiis and $320 for azt90iiis. I was wondering the same thing ages ago. The only thing i could think of was australian GST (10%) or british VAT (17.5%), or, yeah, the rip off the non-americans scheme. Big export profits are always good. The real kicker is that with adidas its not as bad. Ie in uk abs and vap iiis are both 120 while in oz abs are only $280 compared to vaps for $350.

i guess u have not taken microeconomics yet. inelastic demand means that the demand for the boots(in this case) will not change if the buyer pays the import tax. so in the uk the demand is inelastic. in the USA the demand is more elastic. the demand for the product would probably go down if the consumer had to pay the import tax.

i think u guys should go to Hong Kong (I used to live there) and have a look.
I'd say boots (stuffs) in Hong Kong are really cheap....
say... pair of Predator Absolutes FG for HKD980, that's USD125.64 GBP70 and around AUD170
same price for F50+..... and Tunits are selling for HKD1280...
Nikes are around HKD1000 as well.
Too bad they don't sell Puma boots in Hong Kong.....

Well, Here in Iceland, Abs and Vapors,
They cost 25000ISK which is 350 pounds!!

Mar 24 2006, 08:51 AM
Yeah, boots are pretty high priced here too. Freakin Nike, that's why I don't like them. Meanwhile, they're obviously making huge profits since their ad campaign "Joga bonito" has already started here. There's still 2-3 months before the WC.
Adidas isn't as bad, but it depends on the stores, there's one store that specialises in soccer stuff, so the prices are lower (still high).
