this quite interesting yet not surprising seeing the recent run of form the national team had.

Whatever, we all know that the FIFA Rankings are a joke, the whole system is extremely flawed and who really needs a ranking system for football anyways?
Granted, the US has gotten better for sure, but top 5 in the world is ridiculous, I don't think anyone can justify that. Maybe the US are top 20, like 16 or 17 or something. You can even argue top 15

This really is a joke. I mean if were fifth in the world, which I agree we don't deserve, why can't we be a number 1 seed. Also, now if we fail to do well. All of the announcers will say despite being fifth in the world....

the ranking simply reflects how well you did in the games you've played over the past 8 years, how many fifa tournament games you've played and how many you won.

I don't care how "flawed" the FIFA world rankings are, it's nice to see how much the United States have improved over the years.

They don't play enough games like alot of European teams, and when they do play a game and get smoked 4-1, their ranking can't go up because of it. But with the US bringing a banged up squad into Germany, they have alot of potential to pick up points.
Rankings matter enough to factor into seeding. I don't know if anyone could run the numbers but I wonder if we had been 5th in November, would we have enough points to be seeded over Mexico or Italy? I forget the other low teams.

1) The FIFA rankings are a joke.
2) Mexico & USA are about equal in my book at the moment.
3) To actually get around to answering your question: Mexico had a VERY strong Confed. cup.

yeah, i was actually just trying to poke fun at Mexico.
and 4th place at the Confederations Cup doesn't really count as very strong. i just remember that one goal Zinha scored against Japan. that's about it.

I am from Holland, at the time the seedings were told we were on number 2 in FIFA ranking and we were not in the top seed. Fifa rankings are a mystery

If I'm not mistaken, they go back 8 years into the past, so right there, you can tell something is out of wack. How idiotic is it to consider results from 8 years ago in the evaluation of a teams current quality?!
