JUVENTUS, one of the giant clubs of world football, wants to play A-League champion Sydney FC after the World Cup finals.
The likely Serie A champion would bring all its big guns to Sydney for the one-off game before the start of next season's A-League in August.
With such stars as Alessandro Del Piero, Gianluca Zambrotta, David Trezeguet, Patrick Vieira, Pavel Nedved, Adrian Mutu, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcelo Zalayeta playing for Juve, Sydney would probably have to look at staging the game at Telstra Stadium.
The attraction of the multi-million-dollar team would be enormous.
Sydney chairman Walter Bugno was overheard with two other people at a coffee shop at Star City discussing plans for the match.
It is understood Juve wants to play two games in Asia and one in Australia and approached Sydney.
"You can't even have a coffee without people eavesdropping," Bugno said yesterday. "All I am prepared to say is that we are working on a couple of potential games leading into the new season and both are against overseas sides. I am not going to say any more until they are locked away."
However, he quashed reports that Italian striker Paolo di Canio would be Sydney's guest player next year.
"Don't read too much into the Italian newspapers," Bugno said.
It was reported that Di Canio, now playing for Lazio, would replace Dwight Yorke as Sydney's marquee player.
"Dwight's our marquee player," Bugno said.
"We are negotiating with a guest player right now and it's not di Canio. It is someone special, but it's a case of working around the draw.
"In the draft draw we have some consecutive games at home and that's where we want to fit the player around. We have to do what's best for Sydney financially.
"As for Dwight, we expect him to report back to Sydney as soon as the World Cup is over. I've had a good chat with Dwight."
German coach Pierre Littbarski will be back in town this week to sort out a new contract with Sydney.
Littbarski has said that while he would love to stay in Sydney, he will leave the club if he's offered only a one-year deal.
Bugno desperately wants the German to continue.
"Pierre has done a fantastic job for the club and my recommendation is that we keep him," Bugno said.
He is confident the club will reap the benefit of more sponsorship dollars after last week's grand final win.
