The English Premiere League vs. Ligue 1 Orange

The Barclay’s English Premiere League is known virtually everywhere on the face of the planet. From Malaysia to London, Sao Paolo to Manchester, and Cape Town to Liverpool, It is arguably the most known league alongside Italy’s Serie A and Spain’s La Liga, 2 leagues that house absolute powerhouse teams such as La Liga’s FC Barcelona and Real Madrid FC and Serie A’s Juventus, AC Milan, and Internazionale Milan. Manchester United FC, Manchester city’s football club, is now known as the world’s most known club. With affiliations with the NY Yankees through a billionaire owner, it’s no surprise this club, along with the league in general, is becoming even more popular.
France’s Ligue 1 Orange, a league with lots of history in the last half century, is not as widely popular as the EPL. Known commonly as a “feeder league” for other big leagues, some of the most promising young talent in the footballing world comes from France. Only 2 french teams have been champions of Europe before, Paris Saint-Germain in 1996 with the UEFA Cup (my personal home club) and Olympique de Marseille in 1993 with the Champions League. With some of the bigger names in the world of football prodigies of today vowing to remain in France and win cups with French teams again, things are bound to get started up again.
These 2 leagues are obviously similar in the sense that they host the same sport, but they also follow the same scoring methods and relegation methods. Not only that, but one of the Premier League’s greatest teams, Northern London’s Arsenal FC, is incredibly influenced by French players and a French team manager (of whom is blamed of hogging all of France’s young prospects and buying them before they become “big”). Many of the greatest players playing in the EPL are French or have started their careers in Ligue 1 Orange.
Now to the differences, England has the greatest league in the world, France doesn’t . Simply put, it’s the way pop culture has turned out, and as ridiculously competitive Ligue 1 is, it still isn’t considered a powerhouse, yet. The money involved between the 2 leagues is vastly different, with the Premiere League spending millions and millions of pounds each season while Ligue 1 teams rely mainly on scouting and youth programs, training kids form as early as the age of 8 in some cases (Samir Nasri, Olympique de Marseille and one of the French national team’s most promising talents, was signed at 8 years old). The rivalries between teams, in my honest opinion, are the of the same level if not higher then England’s. A Liverpool – Everton or Manchester United – Manchester City “derby” (term for inner city rivalry) can have bands of infamous hooligans fighting after a match, but a PSG – Marseille game can have immense injuries. As different as these 2 leagues are, or any other league at that, they remain the same through one thing: passion. Each league has the same passion from it’s fans and supporters as the next, some showing it at different levels and in different methods. The passion displayed by followers of professional teams is the same passion displayed by people around the world who play football on a daily, if not hourly, basis and is proof that football truly is indeed “The World’s Greatest Game”.
