Mini ruled out, Hunt to debut
By Daniel Pace and Adrian Proszenko
May 1, 2006

THE selection of New Zealand-born fullback Karmichael Hunt for Australia has caused outrage on several fronts following the controversial omission of North Queensland counterpart Matt Bowen for the Anzac Test in Brisbane on Friday.

Hunt will make his Test debut for Australia at the Brisbane fullback's home ground, Suncorp Stadium, after Sydney Roosters No.1 Anthony Minichiello was ruled out with a lower back injury today.

The Kiwis were publicly saying "good luck" to Hunt at their Gold Coast camp today but many are planning to give the teenager a hostile reception in what is expected to be a fast and physical Test.

"I'm expecting quite a bit, even the dirty stuff," Hunt said in Sydney today.

Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr was shocked at Bowen's omission from the squad after the diminutive fullback toured with the Kangaroos for last year's Tri-Nations tournament, won by the Kiwis.

"I'd hate to think that Saturday cost him a jersey," Parr said, referring to Bowen's poor game in the Cowboys' loss to the Roosters.

"If (the Kangaroos) had been picked a fortnight ago after the Newcastle game, I doubt whether he would have missed out."

Hunt's selection provides a clear sign that Australia coach Ricky Stuart wants size in his squad to combat the likes of giant Kiwi backs Tame Tupou and Jake Webster.

Meanwhile, New Zealand halfback Thomas Leuluai criticised Hunt for failing to declare his allegiance to the Kiwis or Australia until the Kangaroos selectors forced his hand.

"He changes his mind a bit too much for my liking," the Harlequins No.7, who has the enormous job of replacing the retired Stacey Jones, said.

"He's either a Kiwi or he's not.

"Like everyone here (at camp on the Gold Coast), we're all Kiwis and we all want to play.

"I think (Kiwi coach Brian McClennan) stresses that point a lot, about us playing for each other.

"If you've got someone thinking about playing in the green and gold jersey, then he's not meant to be here."

The Kiwis had hoped Hunt would choose the black and white jersey following Jones's retirement, which exposed a lack of depth in the halves.

Hunt, 19, always expressed his desire to play State of Origin for Queensland, which would have made him ineligible to represent New Zealand, but he admitted today the Australia selectors made his decision easier to make.

"They took the decision away from me and made the decision for me," he said.

"Obviously there'd been a bit of speculation a few months back that I was going to change my mind and play for New Zealand, but I stuck to my original decision and it's paid off."

Kiwi star Benji Marshall was disappointed by Hunt's decision after a personal campaign to persuade Auckland-born player to pledge his allegiance to New Zealand.

"I was a little bit surprised and disappointed at the same time," Marshall, who makes his return from a dislocated shoulder on Friday, said.

"I've said it before, everyone makes up their own mind and he has to live with the decision."

Asked if Hunt might be targeted by the Kiwis early in the match, McClennan quipped: "Not in the early moments, the whole game."

"It's interesting, it's kind of funny really.

"He's been here four to five years and he feels he's an Australian.

"Well good luck to him.

"The irony of it all is that it wasn't long ago that it was whether he would play for New Zealand and now he plays for Australia."

Cairns-born Brent Webb, who faced the same dilemma before choosing to debut for the Kiwis in 2004, could see the irony in the situation.

"It's a bizarre thing, probably a first," Webb said.

"I don't think it's ever happened and I don't know if it'll happen again."

I dont like this whole kiwi-born player playing for Australia, it should be your birth place you should play for. Predict another Aussie win though, in what will be a close game for the first 60 minutes i presume.

What about Matthew Bowen? How dare Karmichael Hunt be chosen ahead of him. I wouldnt be surprised if there were riots in Townsville. Bowen is 10 times the player Hunt is and is a match winner. With Andrew Johns playing Australia should win this game easily, hes been in electrifying form and is probably the greatest player of the modern era. I've never seen a player who is so influential that betting has been suspended until confirmation that he was playing.

From a Kiwi point of view it's a relief that Karmichael has made an Aussie rep side. He's snubbed the Kiwi jersey a few times now so that he can one day fulfill his dream of playing for Queensland. I'm sick of it. The Kangaroos can have the guy. Personally, I'm more of a Matty Bowen fan anyway. It seems like an odd decision to pick a lesser fullback for such an occasion. Almost like the Aussies are tying down Hunt so that he can't suddenly change his mind in the future. He had better watch out come Friday night. I heard that Kiwis coach Brian McClennan and his players just laughed when told of the news. The guy is a huge man motivator so this has given him a bit more fuel to add to the fire for his players.

It should be a massive game. I just hope that Benji Marshall and Sonny Bill Williams stay in one piece throughout this furious encounter. It'll be great to see them turn out together for the Kiwis for the first time. The Johns factor definitely gives Australia the edge. He'll want to go out with a bang. I'm pretty happy with our line up though. We'll be competitive.

NZ team:

Our captain Wiki might not play because of a dodgy hammy. It would be a shame to see him miss out. He offers the Kiwis both experience and inspiration on the park. I'm disappointed that Minichiello couldn't play for the Aussies. You really want to play against the best side in these types of matches.

I've heard that the crowd could be between 40000 to 50000. That would be great to see. I hope it's a tight encounter. League needs good, competitive matches on the international stage.

The venue loves up to the stadium, the Cauldron is a fitting nickname smile.gif

It's a great stadium. You get a real feel for the atmosphere even just watching on TV. A few of my mates went over there for State of Origin 3 last year. They loved it.
CaptainCarrots
Some crunching tackles biggrin.gif, just the way it's meant to be played....

Fookin' hell that Jason Cayliss is a big ass mutha' fucker

The first 30 minutes was insane. Awesome hits. Shame the Kiwis only played for the first 45 to 50 minutes. They lacked the intensity in the second half and the defence turned to Swiss cheese. I hope they're hurting, cos they should be. A lot of talk in the lead up only to be thrashed. Wiki's absence was a big blow, but the other senior players had to step up. I think that the turning point in the match came with the Aussie try before half time. Clinton Toopi stupidly tried to off-load inside his own 20m and turned over possession. You can't do that against a classy opposition.

Well done to Andrew Johns and Ben Kennedy. Great farewell performances there. The one thing the Kiwis did achieve was taking Karmichael out of the game. Those hits made on him made me wince. Absolutely massive. Hits like that remind me why I love watching league smile.gif .

The ref was a wanker. He caused problems for both sides. The amount if forward passes that they missed was ludicrous.

A normal on slaught of a sport killing aussie team. Ran away with the win which wasnt good to see after New Zealands performance in the Tri-nations and really didnt live up to most peoples expectations.

Yeh agreed. Rugby League didn't need that on the international stage. A shame about the margin on the scoreboard. It was inflated in the end, but nonetheless a comprehensive win.

Its up to the others to get to that standard. Dont blame Australia.

If its anyones fault that Australia are so dominant, its Englands. England have had plenty of opportunity to develop players but still and I repeat STILL they choose to continue to buy washed up aussie players. Its almost a crime, Aussie players actually look forward to retirement, they end up finishing their career getting more money that what they earned in their prime. The English need to put this money into developing young talent.

You would find one or two in each team, you can hardly blame the english. Pantera partly pointed the problem out stating "others", the sport simply isnt big enough globally to have a dominating force in it.

Well I think it is growing in the sense that we are seeing more talent emerge from Island countries such as Tonga n Fiji but are being claimed as New Zealanders. I think in England football outweigh's rugby league severly as the major winter sports and theres also union to compete with. Australia's success is due to the fact that football's been taken to new levels. The game is faster, tougher and more physical and the administration is alot better than any country.

Just on a side note: None of those Kiwis who played the other night were born in the Islands. A lot of them were born and bred in South Auckland. Auckland has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world. In NZ there are comparatively fewer European guys playing the sport.

If we're guilty of 'claiming' anyone in league it's mostly the Aussie born players laugh.gif . The Cayless brothers, Brent Webb, Jake Webster etc. I wish we'd stop doing that.

Otherwise I agree with the other points you've made.

I am glad that the Aussies won. Now bring on the tri series!!
