The final of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League will be played in Athens on 23 May 2007 after UEFA awarded hosting rights to the Olympic Stadium.
Tallinn decision
The decision was taken by UEFA's Executive Committee at its meeting in Tallinn, Estonia in April 2005. The Greek capital will play host to its first European final since the venue was rebuilt to stage the 2004 Olympic Games. The stadium previously provided the backdrop to the UEFA Champions League showpiece of 1993/94, when AC Milan were 4-0 winners against FC Barcelona. The Spanish club are the champions, having beaten Arsenal FC 2-1 on 17 May 2006 at the Stade de France in Paris.
Proud history
Previous to 1994, Athens also saw the European Champion Clubs' Cup lifted at the Olympic Stadium - also known as the Spiros Louis stadium - in 1982/83, the year after it was first inaugurated. On that occasion, Hamburger SV beat Juventus FC 1-0. The ground also staged the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final when AFC Ajax were 1-0 winners against 1. FC Lokomotiv Leipzig.
Spanish upgrade
Having hosted the first modern Olympics of 1896, Athens underwent a major revamp for the 2004 Games. An airport and metro system were built while the flagship Olympic Stadium was completely renovated. The 72,000-seat arena was upgraded by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and features a distinctive new roof. UEFA decided on Athens after considering its merits in terms of capacity, stadium infrastructure and dossiers including city and airport agreements and promotional plans.
