Muzzy Izzet has been forced to retire after failing to overcome a long-standing knee injury.

The midfielder missed the majority of Birmingham's relegation season last term due to the problem and it has shown little improvement of late.

Blues chief Steve Bruce said on Monday that Izzet was in real pain when putting any stress on the joint and the 31-year-old has taken the decision to call time on his career.

"Muzzy has come to the point where his knee is very, very painful and he can't fulfil what he wants to do," Bruce told the club's official website.

"We would like to thank Muzzy for his efforts during his two years here and wish him all the very best for whatever he chooses to do in the future."

Izzet, a former Turkey international, had a further year to run on his contract at St Andrews, but he agreed to cancel the deal by mutual consent.

The midfielder started his career at Chelsea, but made his name at Leicester during an eight-year stint with The Foxes.

He joined Blues in the summer of 2004, but was never really able to show his class at St Andrews.

Such a shame for him because when he was at Leicester i thought he was outstanding and would have a decent career ahead of him, he broke into the Turkish team at the 2002 WC and everything was looking rosey but then his injuries struck and he hasnt been able to shake them off since. He made a comeback last season but that didnt last long after another injury arose, been a downward spiral and i feel for him.

A real shame, he was a great player and was nice to watch. He will be missed.

He added the "flair" to that all conquering Leicester team smile.gif

The days of Guppy playing on the left for England, Andy Impey being a good right wingback, Lennon and Savage being some of the most hated players in England and Spencer Prior, Gerry Taggert and Matt Elliot being a good back 3.

I seem to forget who they had upfront, I think one of them went on to play for a bigger team. I seem to remember whoever bought him paid a totally acceptable fee considering he had never scored more than 10 league goals for Leicester laugh.gif

No truely that was a hard team to play against in the mid to late nineties and no one like to face them and Izzett was very much a part of that.

Good touch and a very good passer who could have achieved more but for the injuries IMO. Solid premiership player who conjures some good memories for me from a time when Leicester where what Bolton are today

their strikers at the time was Heskey and someone Rafa, he signed for them in the '97 season when Martin Joined i think, then they beat us and United away to get into the Uefa Cup and lost to like Atletico Madrid i believe.

also a member of that Leicester team was Ian Marshall smile.gif

can't think of their other striker though, was it Sutton?

The Heskey thing was meant to be ironic fish.gif cheers1.gif

Steve Claridge was one of there strikers iirc. Collymore had a little spell with them as well i think. Sutton hasn't played for them though

oh right lol, blah!

and yeh i dunno where i got Sutton from, i can't for the life think of me the other striker (not claridge) who i am thinking of, hmm!

best do some research and get back to you on this one tomorrow

Tony Cottee you silly billys! Or was it Steve 'I can't keep a job for 2 weeks' Claridge I'm not too sure.

That was one of the toughest teams about in thier day they had a fortress in Filbert Street.

Shame for the lad it all fucked up for him at Birmingham.

Thats the fella!

I already got Claridge, forgot all about Cottee unbelievably as when I was a kid growing up all I would here from Evertonians in the play ground when volleying a tennis ball was "Cotteeeeeee". Those were good days, especially the "Cottee's better than Rush" arguments.

It was like having a slapping contest with a bloke with no hands.
