Southend have won the race to sign Motherwell defender Steven Hammell.

The Championship new boys have beaten off competition from Aberdeen to sign the full back.

The 24-year-old has signed a two-year deal at Roots Hall after seeing out his contract at Motherwell.

Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson was delighted to land Hammell.

"I've got no doubt he'll be an excellent acquisition," Tilson told the club's official website.

"A lot of arguably bigger sides were interested in him but he wanted to be a part of what we are trying to build here at Southend."

Wycombe Wanderers have appointed former Scottish international Paul Lambert as the new manager at The Causeway Stadium.

The League Two side had been looking for a new boss after the departure of John Gorman, and have now settled on the man who took his first managerial job with Livingston last summer before quitting in February.

A former UEFA Champions League winner with Borussia Dortmund, Lambert has now penned a one-year rolling deal at Wanderers after emerging as the outstanding candidate during the interview process.

Former Derby boss Phil Brown was also in the running but Wycombe managing director Paul Hayes expressed his belief that the club have landed the best man for the job.

"Paul was the pick of the bunch that applied for the job," Hayes told the club's official website.

"He has made it clear what he wants to achieve at this club.

"He is a man really up for the challenge.

"He knows how to win and how to lead the team and I think it's fair to say that out of all the applicants we spoke to we feel as though we've got the right fit.

"The fact that Berti Vogts put him forward for his coaching badges in Germany speaks volumes."

Lambert will officially begin work after returning from holiday on July 7, alongside Gorman's former assistant Steve Brown

Good lcuk to both, the lattar is a strange one though.
Dingo.

Ive got to admit, i thought Paul Lambert was still at Celtic, that just shows how much i know about the goings on in Scottish Football. ph34r.gif Certainly a strange one, cant imagine Wycombe is the most exciting place to manage for a Champions League winner but each to there own. From what ive heard he didnt have the greatest first managerial starts with Livingston so i guess its quite sensible to start in the lower leagues of English football and try and carve out a reputation for yourself.

Not sure who that Hammell is, any information on him Allan ? Is he any good ?

Decent young left-back, I think he is 24 now through. He isn't a flair player but he does a good job and is consistent. Has a single cap for Scotland. We've been after him since January but it dragged on and on and last week we told him we weren't interested in him anymore. The fact of the matter is Southend can afford to pay better wages then Aberdeen at this period in time.

He came through the ranks at Motherwell around the same time as James McFadden of Everton.
