Diego Souza is coming to Benfica finally after his season loan at Flamengo. He has still got a 4 year deal left on his contract with Benfica so he is one for the future. Flamengo wanted to extend his loan contract until the end of December but Benfica refused. He is an U20 Brazil international and he took part at the U20 World Cup last year. He is apparently a very physical player standing at 186cm and 89kgs.
Hopefully he is pretty good I can't wait to see him play

Basically he has two weeks to prove himself to be worthy of the Benfica first team.

Well Diego Souza has been on loan at Gremio this season. I have not seen him play but I heard he has been doing fantastic. They are into the quarter finals of the Libertadores Cup and he has been scoring a few goals apparently. Keep an eye out for him... Hopefully we can see him at SLB next season

Defensor gain edge over Gremio in Libertadores Cup
By Brian Homewood
RIO DE JANEIRO, May 16 (Reuters) - Uruguayan outsiders Defensor Sporting pulled off another shock in the Libertadores Cup on Wednesday, beating former champions Gremio 2-0 in their quarter-final first leg.
Headed first-half goals from defenders Gonzalo Sorondo and Willams Martinez gave Defensor victory in Montevideo and a useful lead for the second leg, despite having Alvaro Gonzalez sent off before halftime.
Defensor, who knocked out Gremio's fellow Brazilians Flamengo in the previous round to reach the last eight for the first time, went ahead after just 55 seconds when Sorondo headed in at the far post from a corner.
Gonzalez was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 38th minute, but Defensor still added to their lead when Martinez beat goalkeeper Sebastian Saja to the ball to head the second from a free kick.
Gremio, champions in 1983 and 1995, failed to make much headway in the second half despite their numerical advantage.
Their problems were compounded when striker Diego Souza was sent off after the final whistle for dissent and will miss the second leg in Porto Alegre.
Striker??? I thought this guy was a defensive midfielder.

Who cares? Benfica needs strikers! If he reckons he can do a job up there, then by all means allow him to, bring him in next season and let's see if we can get something happening up front. Especially with Miccoli's future uncertain, we need to make certain a forward who can score somewhat regularly, as in, often regularly, not Nuno Gomes regularly.

Nah he's not playing as a striker, man, sports media is getting worse and worse.
He plays in the midfield. Gremio plays with Tuta and C.Eduardo up front (mediocre players). Diego Souza is a good player but nothing amazing. He is strong and can turn when playing on the sides, which apparently is his best position. He can score eventually as well.
He cannot play as a DM, or CMF, he doesn't have the attention and work rate for that.

Exactly.
He is a kind of AM, playing on the sides. Perhaps a kind of winger. Difficult to define, which is part of his limitations actually.

Diego Souza scores again and leads Gremio to the Libertadores final...as discussed previously in this thread he was a defensive mid when he came to Benfica but now he is playing attacking mid. Surely he deserves a place in our squad if Beto has been in it for that past few years

When is his loand deal over?
Gremista
Jun 8 2007, 04:23 PM
Here is the deal with Diego Souza. He's now playing as an AM. Gremio plays with 2 attackers (C.Eduardo and Tuta) and D.Souza coming from the middle. Right after passing the ball to D.Souza for the Gremio goal - first half, C.Eduardo left the game injured and D.Souza was all alone up front (since Tuta was injured and Amoroso was suspended - the 3rd sub is a joke).
Still, Diego Souza was heart and skill and if weren't for Santos GK he'd have scored the second goal in a counter.
But, his edge is, as you can see in the above video, that play on the right wing. That play, when he's got his back to the defender, and then turns and consistently beats the defender, is his trademark. And more importantly, that play works every time at home as well, when the the opponent is playing on their half, all defense. It works cause he doesn't need much space for that as he uses his amazing power.
Very good to see a good player recovering from a bad spell. Hope he never goes back to DM, don't think he has the pace for that position, or attitude, it's just not in him.

Just heads up... Diego is pretty much doing the same in the Brasileiro. A gol per game, amazing performances. Probably, one of the best players in the league right now (if not the best one).
Gremio is 5th, A team only played after losing the final to Boca. Players that were already injured at the boca (but played) match are still out as of today, which includes a midfielder, 2 attackers. Also, C.Eduardo is in the U20 NT. Point is D.Souza is the ONLY player there capable of scoring, the opponents know this but cannot stop him.

Vasco da Gama is apparently interested. They also are interested in Marcel LOL. I totally forgot about that guy. I really don't like signing foreigners but I guess it is all we can hope for after all the English clubs and Spanish teams are always buying our players. Diego Souza: «Benfica decide o meu futuro» MÉDIO BRASILEIRO NA EXPECTATIVA

Grêmio Look To Keep Hold Of Benfica Midfielder Souza
Brazilian side Grêmio have contacted Benfica with the intention of making Diego Souza's loan move permanent in the New Year.
Souza, 22, has been on loan with the Porto Alegre side since 2006 and was a vital component in the team that reached the final of this year's Copa Libertadores, before eventually losing out to Boca Juniors.
With the loan deal having come to an end on the 31st December, Grêmio are now looking to sign Souza on a permanent basis and have contacted Benfica to sound out the possibility of this happening,
"The proposal to Benfica is made," Grêmio's vice-president of finance, Túlio Macedo, told Placar.
"Now we need to see a reply. We have to wait for that."
It is thought that Benfica will request around €4million for the midfielder, although Grêmio are hopeful that this can be reduced to a fee more within their price range.
If they fail to come to an agreement, then São Paulo and Palmeiras are assumed to be waiting in the wings, having both previously shown an interest in the player.
Souza began his career at Fluminense, where he was sufficiently impressive in his first season to earn a move to Benfica, who had been tracking his progress since the 2001 South American U-17 Championship.
After a successful loan spell with Flamengo, Souza was brought back to Benfica in 2006, but only played two games before starting the loan spell at Grêmio that has just come to a close.
Although Benfica do hold the midfielder in relatively high esteem, it is thought that they are willing to let him leave if he feels his future is best served in his homeland.
