With Roberto Ayala the eminent retirement from International play, I though about what our all time World Cup starting line-up would be.
Strikers: Gabriel Batistuta and Mario Kempes
Attacking Midfielder: Diego Maradona
Midfield: Alfredo DiStefano
Defensive Mid: Daniel Passarella and Fernando Redondo
Defenders: Roberto Ayala; Antonio Rattin; Oscar Ruggeri; Javier Zanetti
GK: Ubaldo Filliol
---Batigol--------Kempes----
-------------Maradona---------
-----Di Stefano-----------------
---Passarella-----Redondo-----
Ayala--Rattin--Ruggeri--Zanetti
--------------Filliol-----------------

If you want all-time best Argentinians then Redondo yes, but if you're talking about players for the NT, then Simeone probably deserves a mention as well.

nice topic pal.Personally i would choose this one...
Fillol
Zanetti Passarella Ayala
Rattin Ardiles
Burruchaga Maradona
Stabile Kempes Batistuta
About di stefano, i think that he never played for the national team. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Di Stefano did play for Argentina and won a Copa America trophy. Argentina lost two stars in Di Stefano and Sivori.

i didn't put redondo and di stefano because they hardly played for argentina...redondo just played in 1 WC whereas di stefano never did..since this in an all-time wc 11, i didn't started with moreno and sivori because they never played for us in WC

Bertoni played on the right side of midfield lots of times. I know that this is not Kempes`s best position, but he did actually play on the left side of midfield in the 1982 World Cup. Lots of people seem to think Kempes was a striker. He was not. He was an attacking midfielder. I have seen lots of games with him, and on some occations he played as a second striker, but in most og the games I have seen with him, he plays as an attacking midfielder.

yeah bertoni also played in the mid, but he was better inside the area... Bochini-Bertoni for example, was the strongest duo of the time.

...crespo anyone?...not sure why he isnt up there...overall u guys covered all the bases but still missing crespo
Giacinto Facchetti.

crespo is an absolute legend of the game but he can't compare to the great batigol or maradona simple as that.

for some reason i believe his numbers are just as up there in world cup play as batigol....he was tied for the lead in goals this past WC too i believe...if not tied for second with 3....

crespo isn't in any lineup because he doesn't have a status like batigol. Crespo played everywhere while batigol played 10 years in fiorentina i think. He's a legend there. I think he even cried after scoring against fiorentina for as roma. Crespo scores in every team he plays, but he isn't a leader, he can't even play anywhere for more than 2 years. i think it doesn't realy have something to do with the WC performance, but with the players "character".

Batigol cried when he scored his first goal against fiorentina it was

but he cried rather than celebrating the good goal and went to give Toldo a hug, it was one of the most emotion incidence i'll never forget.

the topic though is about the world cup squad...and crespo moves around not because of his desire but rather teams feel the need to move him...which is dumb because he just keeps scoring and scoring...

Crespo keeps on moving because he never wins the league title or champions league with any of his clubs. He won stuff with Chelsea last season but was not used fully.

since parma days till now he never bang less then 10 goals in a season, mostly 15 - 26. i agree that he moved because he always finished at no.2 .... in parma, lazio, milan (both league & CL) and even in olympic where he was a top score.
but just like bati moved to roma , once crespo moved to chelsea and finally won a league title and now he's going for his first scudetto and scored 15 goals already.
its sad that people will always rate him as watered down version of batigol.
btw my all time argentina starting 11 would be pretty similar with pico32...

Even though he will win the scudetto this season it will not be a 'proper' win because of what happened to Juventus and Milan. I'm sure if Crespo played in WC 2002 like he was supposed to, Argentina would've gotten to the final, Batistuta was completely useless and past his sell by date in that tournament. What a stupid decision by Biesla.

Apr 5 2007, 05:07 AM
nah, milan & juventus are proof to be guilty on max fixing scandal... and if juventus didnt do that lazio, parma or other teams could have win the title instead of juve. if juventus fans are still proud of their fake title why not inter who's not even involve on that scandal.
during 2002 world cup batistuta scored 1 goal in 3 matches , crespo scored 1 goal in 10 minutes of play. guess who's better at that point.
He just said that he want to play at copa, i hope he'll go for it. batistuta had won it twice and also snap the golden boot. Crespo is capable of doing the same...

Crespo is a goal machine imo but wen u choose a team with 2 strikers, Batistuta & Kempes are definitely better
Jorge A
May 17 2007, 09:33 PM
hehe i am more partial to crespo than batistuta...i believe crespo gets a bad reputation due to his inability to find a home in a club for more than 2 seasons
Maradona^10
May 18 2007, 05:36 AM
crespo is still goalscoring machine till today. but i would agree that he move to other team too often which is why he never had a stong fan base on each club.
But he never failed to keep his high scoring rate in every club he played on. he has find the net againts brazil, germany, england,MU, liverpool, arsenal, roma, milan, etc. So i dont agree if people think he's not on the same level with bati, at least he's very close.

agreed! and his passing is superb...see the wonder goal vs serbia montenegro with his heel kick pass to cambiasso!
Maradona^10
May 18 2007, 09:57 AM
he's age wont be a huge problem because he hardly fight for the ball or try to dribble opponent, his well positioning & finish is wht make him a superb striker. only 4 argentina striker had netted more then 200 goals in european soil, batistuta, crespo, kempes & di stefano.
btw, back to topic... i would put crespo in all time team as subtitute. kempes is argentine no.1 all out striker because he's not only good at finishing but also good at dribbling. look at his first goal againts peru or the goal againts holland, his ball control is superb. i'm still gonna put bati ahead of crespo because he's more powerfull especially his long range kick & freekick.
