Well as many know the US Open Cup is one of the oldest tournaments in the country, and while it is not valued that highly in the MLS ranks, for some teams it is still a big deal.
One of those teams is Roma FC, an amateur team out of Dallas Texas, beat Miami FC in the second round 1-0 off of a PK. Romario did play, along with all the other big names on that team. Roma drew Chivas USA in the third round. A pro team vs an amateur team is the best it gets in the US open.
Roma beat Chivas tonight in PKs (0-0, 4-2 after pks) at UCSB's harder stadium, in arguably the most shocking result in the US open in the last decade or so. Chivas played down a man starting in the 57th minute due to a red card to Ante Razov.
All other MLS teams advanced out of the third round and Roma FC will play Galaxy in the fourth round.
Amazing stuff.

Thanks for the site man. I had no idea how many other soccer teams there were in america outside the MLS. Do USL teams get paid?

USL divisions 1 & 2 get paid. It is the old A-League.
Dream stuff by Roma. You'd have to be crazy not to cheer for them.

most games are played at small stadiums that aren't set up for tv crews. i.e. the next game for roma FC is against the galaxy, and the natural assumption would be that it would be in the home depot center but the game will be played at the track and field stadium just across the parking lot.
the later rounds get played in the big stadiums but thats when it is only mls teams pretty much.
plus GolTV isnt that big of an organization.

I am not cheering against the Galaxy in a game, but I would love for the fairy tale to keep going especially after Lalas tried to talk some smack about Roma. What GM talks smack about an Open Cup game against USASA team?

What did he say?

"We've all been captivated by the Cinderella story that is Roma FC, but the fairy tale is about to come to an abrupt end," said L.A. Galaxy President and General Manager Alexi Lalas. "We look forward to hosting the overachievers from Texas in the next round of the Open Cup and exposing them to a quality MLS side."
I guess there is just as much smack directed towards Chivas USA there too.

Schell was not amused by Lalas’s comments.
“He’s already talking trash,” Schell said. “They’re supposed to beat us, but a lot of our guys are out to prove a point that a lot of M.L.S. teams are not looking hard enough for the good players. They’re looking for the young players who will take $27,000 a year to start out.”
The game is tonight. Baby Jesus is out with a hurt hammy. And Cobi Jones will be playing left back tonight. Should be a good one.
----Edit
And to no one's surprise, the LA Galaxy won 2-0 with goals from Quavas Kirk and the newly demoted (to the Portland Timbers) Alan Gordon.
Great run by Roma, their starting keeper was not available due to his wife giving birth. And they started warming up the third string one in the second half, but according to match tracker he got hit in the face with a ball before he ever got on.
Galaxy moves on to face Colorado.
highlights of the game:
http://www.ussoccer.com/sights/index.jsp_v...lery-178-1.htmlthats more of a story on Roma but there are highlights too.
