Although Cristian Chivu admits that interest from Real Madrid is flattering, he has stressed that his future lies with Roma.
“It’s great if Real Madrid are interested in me because it means I must be playing well, but I really want to play for Roma,” insisted the Romanian left-back.
“We’re going to carry on what we started last term because we’re on the right road. Last year we had lots of encouragement, but this time we need to do even better.”
Chivu arrived at the Stadio Olimpico in 2003 in a £12.4m deal from Ajax.
Despite struggling with injury problems last season, the 25-year-old played 27 games in Roma’s unexpectedly successful campaign and is widely regarded as one of the world’s best defenders.
If Chivu opts to stay with the Giallorossi, Real Madrid will not be the first high profile club he has snubbed – Milan, Inter and Barcelona are all said to have made unsuccessful attempts to lure him in the past.
Roma look likely to enter the market themselves.
Possible transfer targets include Serbian marksman Mirko Vucinic of Lecce, Chievo striker Amauri and Udinese’s unexpected Azzurri star Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Good news for Roma fans. Chivu is legendary, a top defender.
Ye could very much build yer defence around him and of course keep the offence around Totti.

Roma have heart and this is the reason alot of players like Totti, Mexes, Chivu and co will not leave for bigger clubs, great to see.

Its also why alot people bar Lazio fans, have them as there second team i would say. I like them alot. Their offensive style, their totally commited players, and they dont solve problems by throwing money at them, they unearth gems like Perrota, Cufre, youth kids like Aquilani and of course Totti and take advantage of bosmans like Kuffour and Nonda. Its a very clever and likeable way of going about things.
Big respect to Roma!
