On May 24, 2006, an agreement was reached between Major League Soccer and the principal owners of the Oakland Athletics baseball team. Lewis Wolff and John Fisher have a three year exclusive option to develop a soccer-specific stadium and bring an expansion franchise to the San Francisco Bay Area. [1] The location of the stadium has yet to be determined, but the offices for the effort (set up as Earthquakes Soccer, LLC) are set to open in August 2006 in the The Fairmont San Jose hotel and will be headed by current A's vice president of sales and marketing David Alioto beginning on September 1, 2006. What scares me about MLS is instead of expanding they relocate teams so the number of teams don't increase. Real Salt Lake future is in jeopardy after City Council rejected a bid for Soccer only Stadium. They might be gone after 2007 when their stadium lease ends. KC might have the same problem if they don't get a soccer stadium. I guess if a City wants an MLS team build a Soccer Stadium and you will have it aka Toronto.

What I would like to see them do is put together a deal to get some of the Houston players who left them, such as Brian Ching.
fguzman84
Aug 4 2006, 07:54 PM
that would be nice to get some of the old players back. but there are rumors that John Fisher (owner of Gap and new part owner of the SJ earthquakes) wants to put a lot of money into this project. perhaps some big names will come, 2nd if they stay in San Jose (rather than the rumors of moving to San Francisco) I think they will prob. want a couple of Latin players to draw the large latin community in the South and east bay. I am glad they kept the rights to the name, colors, and history.
-the Rumors of San Francisco is that the New Stadium for the San Francisco 49ers would be soccer ready with hopes of hosting the World cup and Olympics, and that it may be the home to either the earthquakes or a NEW MLS team in the future.
-USSF likes the idea of SF being the site, since it is a more famous city which is world known, and that the recent US international, Mexico, and Club games played in SF have drew large crowds and large profits.

the Earthquakes opened their new official office in downtown San Jose this weds. (11-8-06). new owner wolf held a small celebrating and mentioned on the discussions with the city for the new stadium.
-Rumors are that he is looking into building a giant arena with a retractable roof to be the home of the Earthquakes...which had me a little disappointed at first but it would make us the most original and different from many of the new cookie cutter soccer stadiums being currently built....the San Jose Earthequakes in Intel Arena?
-Wolf just completed a new stadium for the Oakland A's two days ago and is moving them to Fremont(10miles from San Jose) and is having the stadium called Cisco Field (Cisco Systems) which is announced to become the most advanced and technological stadium in baseball and the world...his rich tech. friends will pour money into the A's and hopefully the 'Quakes as well...i want the most adavanced technological soccer stadium in america and the world... we are the the heart of technology here in the Silicon Valley.

I could see it being the most technological advanced football stadium in America, but not in the world. I doubt that they would have enough money to rival some of the monster stadiums in Europe. It is exciting news for fans that were fans of the Earthquakes.

It is a great idea. The location they will play at will depend on the opponent...that has to give some motivation to a less marketable team (cough) Crew (cough).
QUOTE(John Flushing @ Jul 17 2007, 03:37 PM)

unbelievable

If some of the players move to the new team, I suppose I can't blame them..but i'm also furious because I'm not sure what exactly they want. The team also has the most consistent and one of the biggest crowd attendance in the league. we have loyal fans and supporter groups who are always there. sure could be bigger in a city of 4,000,000? of course . you could always use more soccer fans.
i dont think many will move, especially if they get a new stadium rolling here.

Did they have the fan support? Or was there some other issue last time?
jrlm8
Jul 17 2007, 11:03 PM
Their support was on the decline however they still had better support than alot of teams. The issue really came down to AEG and marketing and economics. AEG decided a financially sound investment would be to move the team to Houston so they did. They rebranded the team and all. Now, the owner of the A's is also buying the Earthquakes...and if the A's buisness plan should tell us anything, he won't spend much money but he will develop talent. It should be interesting to see.
Malu: The most you could lose is 3 players unless Houston gets trade happy which I doubt they will. Houston will still be one of the best teams in the MLS, no worries.

The Royal Blue is what makes San Jose 'Quakes 'them, same with the name, it has a history older than most American soccer names still in use with the exception of the Sounders and Timbers.

Good to see that San Jose are back, but get rid of the "Earthquakes" (just my opinion).

There is a proposal in front of city council now about the SSV. It is likely to pass. The stadium would like open in 2010 at this point. So that will be two years of San Jose without a true home.
And I like the name Earthquakes. Alot better than Clash.

Soccer fever catches on for 2008The Oneonta, N.Y.-based U.S. Soccer Hall Of Fame shipped back the large silver MLS Cup trophies won in 2001 and 2003. After the franchise went into hiatus in 2005, the Hall of Fame took the trophies for safekeeping. 'Seeing is believing' as they say. Now Alioto is making sure everyone who wants to can see the physical manifestation of the franchise's best days.
"We're pretty excited. We're going to have some deposit holders come in and they'll get to look at them on display and they can touch them," said Alioto. "It's to drill in the history of the Earthquakes."
The deposit holders are the first step in establishing a season-ticket base for the reborn franchise. The aim is to surpass the 1,500 deposit goal set by Toronto's MLS franchise. Eventually, TFC had over 15,000 season ticket holders, essentially selling out every game for their first season.
San Jose has received 1,100 deposits so far. It is the first step in their timetable of recreating their own excitement for the 2008 season.
According to Alioto, the next 30 days will bring the announcement of the home venue for 2008.
In the next 45 days, the Earthquakes will hire their technical director and head coach.
In 60 days, season ticket sales begin in earnest. November will be the expansion draft, which the Earthquakes can pick the day because they are the only team participating. The expansion draft will allow the team to build the initial roster before the MLS draft proper happens in January.
In addition, the team plans on having tryouts for players throughout Northern California, including Salinas possibly.
"We've been in contact with the mayor down there about being one of the host cities for the tryout tour," said Alioto, himself born in Salinas.
The tryouts would be for players aged 17 to 30 and are for a place in the Earthquakes' Academy, a key way for the team to discover and develop new talent.
The last issue for resurrecting the team happens in October when the Earthquakes present their plan to the San Jose City Council to build a stadium near the San Jose Airport.
While there is the potential stumbling block of the loss of industrial jobs around the site, Alioto hopes the huge economic gains from stadium workers and holding international games grab the council's attention.
"There's really a lot of economic activity that will surround the stadium. It will far outweigh any possible negative impact," said Alioto. He added that fortunately there has been not much negative feedback.
"Everyone in this area has been pretty supportive."

Kinda sucks for San Jose fans.
Because they give away their team to Houston (who became champs), don't play for 2 seasons, and decide to come back. All this time they could of perhaps been the defending champs as we speak. Instead have to start from scratch.
