Il_Aeroplanino
Jul 16 2006, 02:23 PM
Roma won the first pre-season warm up game against the Rappresentativa Sciliar 11-0.
Goalscorers were: Tulli 3, Cerci, Galloppa, Rosi, Nonda, Cassetti, Mancini, Alvarez and Mexes.
btw. if someone didn't know, Roma are having their pre-season camp in Castelrotto. It's near Bolzano in the Northern Italy.
Next warm-up game will be against Standard Liége in the 22th of July.

Roma won Timisoara 1-0. Okaka scored the goal.
Spalletti said in today's press conference that Roma will sign 2-3 players in this summer.

Yeah, they need to too to survive the European and Serie A assault.
Okaka scoring is good for Roma too. That kid has promise and even if he can get it done in pre season it will help...ALOT! He's still only 17 isnt he?

I agree. He's a big young boy with a pretty decent touch and looks sharp in the area, from the few bits and pieces i have seen from in. Though with the impending signing of Vucinic, adn the return to fitness of Nonda and Montella, he's gonna be a small bit down the list again isnt he?

I doubt it. Nonda and Montella are ALWAYS injured. He will get a few games in this year. Also if we get our squad big enough, we can rotate a bit to let guys rest of European games. I expect him to play abit more than last year.

Cerci is a forward. Apparently this guy is supposed to be really good, but hasn't got on the first team yet. I think his problem is that he might be too injury prone. I think Italiamia can tell you more about him.

Those are bothe gonna be very interesting games. Valencia and Porto are both top team inthier respective leagues. I believe that the results of these two games will atleast give us an inklingas to how well we will do in the group phase of the Champions league. But again, they are friendly matches so

That is assuming those mother f-ing c.unts (courts) dont pull a fast one on us.

Line up against Porto:
------------------------ Curci -----------------------
Cassetti ------ Mexes ------ Chivu ------ Panucci
---------------- Faty --------- Aquilani ------------
Alvarez ------------ Mancini ------------- Tonetto
---------------------- Nonda -----------------------
Subs: Comotto for Panucci 46', Rosi for Tonetto 46', Ferrari for Chivu 62', Giacomini for Alvarez 63', Mido for Nonda 63', Galloppa for Faty 70', Okaka for Mancini 85'.
Haven't seen any highlights or anything from the game, but both Il Romanista and La Gazzetta said it was a solid performance from Roma, despite the 1-0 defeat. All we were missing was a bit more composure and class upfront (can you say Vucinic?). We were missing all of our international players, while Porto were at full-strenght considering that it was their official presentation game.
Next up is a friendly against Shaktar Donetsk on Saturday 5 August, then v Valencia on Saturday 12 August.
Oh and Resolve, you clown, aren't Porto one of Sporting Lisbon's biggest rivals, and yet you cheer for them? Perhaps you are the type of supporter who only cheers for their team when they are winning, and so abondon them for a more successful side like Porto, and have to resort to pathetic remarks to make yourself feel good..?

It sound as though we played pretty well, though. I think all of the preseason news has been pretty promising. I don't know who Porto were missing, but clearly we were without Totti, Perrotta, DDR and Cufre, Kuffour, Monty, and Taddei which makes it pretty silly to pay too much attention to the results of these games. It has sounded as though Faty and Aquilani have been linking up quite well in the middle of the park and reports from last night suggest that Alvarez and Mancini had strong games. It will be interesting to see if Alvarez can come along at all this season. Clearly he's got the raw pace and he did some good things towards the end of last season, all, I think, without Totti who may be able to unleash his pace a bit more. Probably he doesn't have the technical and tactical nous to cut it but it'll be interesting to keep an eye on his development.
Without Cufre, interestingly, it seems Panucci played on the left and Cassetti on the right. It will be interesting to see what happens when Cufre is available. And then in the second half Commotto replaced Panucci. Tonetto played on the left-side of midfield and Rosi came on for him also at the beginning of the second half. I shall be interested to see exactly how Spags envisages making use of those three additions within the squad. Cassetti and Commotto, I would imagine, fancy having a crack at Panucci and Cufre for those starting positions.
Shield, you and your bloody formations. Give a poor guy a chance. For all that Porto were at full strength, I think they also made eleven substitutions at half-time. Is that right? And it was interesting though hardly surprising to see Mancini playing in Totti's role, as it were, with Cornetto and Uncle A giving us our width.

I take it you typed up your first 2 paragraphs of nonsense there without seeing my previous brilliantly insightful and thoroughly accurate post, even though I haven't seen a second of the action (uh huh), but I am usually right. Yes, I am joking, and of course it is good to read your insights into the game...
Panucci on the left is an interesting one. I wonder if he feels comfortable playing there. I'm sure he prefers the right-hand side, but if he is able to switch to the left without any big problems then all the better. He did play a few games there last season. And before, I never really considered Cassetti and Commotto to be options for left-full – I know Commotto is quite versatile and can play there, but I think he, like Don Panucci, prefers the right – but perhaps Spalletti does see them as being fully capable of filling in on the left if needed and so doesn't consider aquiring a new left-back as a major issue. And with Tonetto playing on the wing as opposed to in defence, perhaps that is an indication that Spalletti see's him more as winger than a full-back, even if it is probably to early to say for sure. I still think we need a new quality winger, but with the way we our transfer campaign has been progressing thus far I wouldn't hold my breath...

Yes, it's one of the tricks of this board isn't it - merging two consecutive messages together into a single response. I guess it's an anti-spamming device or anti-flooding, I guess, is the proper term you computery technos use. I'm not sure that's Chaucer's term for it, but there you go. So that's really two posts, the last paragraph added upon seeing your new post had suddenly arrived with all the pertinent information.
I believe Panucci has played a fair bit at left-back over the years. I think I've suggested this once or twice over on goal.com. When he first came to Roma I was half expecting him to play on the left and fight Candela for that slot, playing a bit more defensively to match Cafu doing rather the opposite on the right. In the end, though, he spent more time in a back 3 or behind Cafu playing increasingly as more of a winger. He has played on the left a fair bit, though, but I suspect Spags still has in mind Panucci on the right and Cufre on the left at this stage. When we signed Commotto he was certainly described as a right-back who could also play on the left so I wasn't surprised to see him have a run there yesterday evening. Of all of the fullbacks he's the one I think Spags is envisioning using most flexibly.
I don't know about a winger. At this stage I think Spags is pretty comfortable with the balance of the squad and so any additions are likely to be matched by players leaving (Mido if Iaquinta comes in, perhaps Nonda if Vucinic comes in) and so were we to pick up an out-and-out winger of real quality (Esposito?), I imagine it might be at the expense of someone like Alvarez who could, perhaps, be loaned out. The way I see it, Spags wants a balance of inside-forward players and true wide-players to play in that trequartista line and with Perrotta, Mancini, Taddei, Tonetto, Rosi, Alvarez (Cerci?) he's got most options covered. Substituting Alvarez or Taddei with someone with some really explosive quality could clearly improve the team, but I suspect that's going to require the kind of investment we're unlikely to venture. Perhaps Semolina or Jiminez? But I'm not completely persuaded that a line of either of those, Totti, and Mancini is that much stronger than the one we had last year with Taddei on the right. Perhaps it would be, but this is also assuming that Perrotta is going to play alongside DDR rather than further forward.

Jul 31 2006, 09:33 AM
We probably do have enough squad depth, and Spalletti is probably content with the wingers in the squad, even though in an ideal situtaion he would like to bring in a Semioli or a Ribery or whoever, but considering our transfer troubles he may be settled on working with what we already have. There is nothing too wrong with that, I suppose. Alverez may explode and show he is a top winger or Rosi may really develop and push for a starting spot, but what I was saying is that if we did bring in a quality winger it would only make us stronger, and then we could loan out Rosi or Cerci for some experience. We are a now a team in the CL, and over a long season having a player with that extra bit of proven quality would be a lot better for us.
maro
Jul 31 2006, 09:58 AM
Shield, I agree. I was being realistic without quite being resigned - I do think Taddei has a lot to offer in that trequartista line and that bringing on Alvarez off the bench can add some real explosiveness which could change the course of a match. So with Totti, Mancini, Taddei, Alavarez, and then Perrotta and whatever else Rosi and Cornetto can bring to the party, there's room for a bit of optimism and excitement. However, I don't think any of us can shake the feeling that had Signor Sensi been able, been inclined, once more to dip his hands deep into his pockets to add, let's say, a really quality reinforcement at fullback, in the middle of the park, on the wing, up front and, let's be greedy, a Buffoon as the cherry on the top, then we might have seen our beloved club once and for all secured at the very top of the Italian and European game. And, of course, we're entitled such dreams because of the kinds of players who have suddenly become available within Italy. Vucinic and a top quality winger would still be exciting (for instance, I like the thought of Alvarez or Rosi or Cerci being used as squad players, finding their feet, coming good - but surely there won't be space for bringing along all three at the same time?), but at this stage I suspect it's much more likely to be Vucinic and then perhaps both Diarra and Appiah with Faty sent out on loan. Appiah, of course, has now been rendered ineligible for European games for the rest of the season which makes him a rather less attractive proposition. And you never know - Sensi has come up big for the club in the past - and here I'm thinking particularly of the purchase of someone like Chivu. So you never know.
The_Tuna
Jul 31 2006, 05:16 PM
Maro, that may all change if the club is sold. But as you mentioned, 10mil might go a longer way than we all thought, maybe enough to land two quality signings. But do you think that because Sensi plans to sell we are not seeing a real big attempt at landing some high profile players?

This saturday, the 19th, we are playing a friendly against Real Zaragoza in Rieti. Zaragoza will be a good test, they have some good players, and we must get a meaningful friendly win before the season starts.
And apparentley we are playing a SERIE B team, Juventus, in a friendly match on Monday 4 September. I read on the Addict that apparantley when we sold Emerson to Juvemerda we included a '4 game friendly-match clause', meaning we have play them once every pre-season for 4 years, this being the second meeting, with all proceeds going to us.

Actually cant wait to see Zaragoza get into the flow of things in La Liga with those 4 players.
