Coaching Staff
Head Coach: Javier Aguirre Onandia
Nationality: Mexican
DOB: January 1, 1958
Birthplace: Mexico City

Current Job: Atletico Madrid, 2006-
Coaching Career: Atlante (Mexico), 1995-1996; Pachuca (Mexico), 1998-2001; Mexico NT, 2001-2002; Osasuna (Spain), 2002-2006.
A former footballer himself, gaining 50 caps for his country and playing in the 1986 World Cup, a World Cup widely remembered for the utter dominance displayed by Diego Maradona, Javier Aguirre has earned himself a pedigree in football at all levels, not only as a player but more recently as a manager. Having managed Mexico at the 2002 World Cup where they finished top of a group consisting of recent World Cup winnners Italy, Ecuador and Croatia, Aguirre is no stranger to challenges. His previous club endeavours included managing CF Atlante, CF Pachuca (Mexico) and more recently CA Osasuna (Spain). His signing of a contract with Atleti represents a willingess to grow, to succeed and flourish for a club that has so often disappointed its fans.
In the 05/06 season, Aguirre lead Osasuna to a Champion's League berth after they finished in fourth place behind title winners FC Barcelona and also Real Madrid and Valencia. They can consider themselves unlucky though, having occupied top spot for quite a while in the early stages of the season and only floundering late on, but not enough to give up the European qualification they sought. Despite being a man with a love for the enjoyable things in life, Javier looks at football as his occupation and therefore approaches all challenges professionally and with an acute sense of how to resolve all matters that come across a footballing club, not only on the pitch but off it also.

Bianchi Sacking Cost Atlético Seven Million Euros
Atlético de Madrid are preparing their end of year financial statement, due to be presented to shareholders on New Year’s Eve, and a (deliberate) leak has made it clear that it won’t be too rosy given the expensive fiasco that was ex-Boca Coach Carlos Bianchi.
Bianchi arrived as the great hope to bring the Colchoneros back to the sort of table-topping form they last saw in the mid to late nineties with players such as Vieri, Kiko, Caminero and Simeone in the red-and-white ranks. Unfortunately the Argentine bombed at Atlético.
The Coach was brought in with a great trumpeted fanfare that would turn into a long, sloppy raspberry as the Rojiblancos slumped to yet another mediocre season fraught with problems and peppered with rollercoaster performances that lacked any consistent style.
Javier Aguirre, then at Osasuna, was brought in to staunch the haemorrhage as Atlético were taken apart by Real Zaragoza in the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup). Bianchi was hardly thrilled at the fact that he’d followed up his previous European failure (AS Roma) with another flop and demanded every last red cent on his contract.
“The cancelling of the Coach’s contract with Atlético de Madrid represented an extraordinary expense of 7.4 million Euros”, explained the leaked sheet that forms part of the draft version of the 2006 financial statement, also showing that the Madrid club spent a total of 88.1 million Euros in 2006.
The figures put the ‘Bianchi Botch’ at close to 10% of the club’s annual spending, rather horrendous but not enough to throw the club into chaos as they now have an important real estate asset that will be transformed into a new training centre and are expected to announce a slim profit: 3.4 million Euros.

€7m? Damn.
Not only did he bring a medicore season but he leaves with alot more in his pocket. A bitter end to a bitter chapter, and while €3.4m is not much, it is still profit.

Atletico Madrid president Cerezo denies Aguirre resignation rumour
tribalfooball.com - November 27, 2006
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has rubbished reports suggesting coach Javier Aguirre had offered his resignation after their defeat to Real Zaragoza earlier this month.
"Aguirre has good potential and ability," said Cerezo. "Nobody has discussed his situation at the club. He has come with very clear ideas and will make this one a great team."
I'm sure that these 'rumour' are false, but if they weren't I would be shocked. I have a lot of faith in Aguirre, and he has just started. In almost every match we've played dominant football, were the better team. But our biggest problem so far is to score (though we scored 7 in the last 3 matches). But that is mainly because of the long term injuries of Maxi and Petrov (and maybe Mista too).
Don't forget that we're 5th in the table, something that we should be happy about, though I've the feeling that Aguirre can do even better and let us finish on a CL spot. It would be completely ridiculous to fire/let resign Aguirre. I think he sees that too after we're back in form the last matches.

Nov 29 2006, 03:10 PM
That seems pretty ridiculous to me, even in the Spanish league. The defeat to Zaragoza was humiliating, but Aguirre doesn't seem like the kind of man just to walk out that easily. He looks to be enjoying his time at the club and has a lot of great players to work with in his quest to make Atleti great once again. I for one think he has done a great job so far and lying 5th in league at this point after all the injuries we've had is a great effort all round. Here's how he's compared to other recent managers 12 games in to the new season:

Equal best record with Radi Antic and we all know how that season finished!
With some key players out injured and little firepower in front of goal Aguirre has done brilliantly to get us to 5th place. He's made a good solid defence (just 9 goals conceded) and signed some excellent young players such as Ze Castro, Aguero and Miguel. I'm looking forward to a long and successful era under Javier's management.

Aguirre calm over Atletico Madrid contract situation
tribalfooball.com - March 11, 2007
Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre has no concerns over his contract status.
The Mexican's current deal expires in June, but he says: "It is not a high-priority subject for me, the high-priority thing is that the team works and reaches Europe. My situation is absolutely secondary. I always fix my affairs in two minutes and the same will happen this time, because it is not something that is a high-priority, neither for me nor for the club."
Darn, I didn't even know his contract was already running out. He MUST stay, I really like the guy, no matter if we qualify for Europe or not. And I hope he'll get a new deal soon, that would take away some pressure

The Mexican's current deal expires in the summer and he is yet to sit down with Atletico to discuss extending his stay at the Vicente Calderon.
Despite Valencia's success in the Champions League this season, coach Quique Sanchez Flores remains at loggerheads with a section of management, including sports director Amedeo Carboni, and his future at the Mestalla remains far from secure, says AS.

Aguirre puts off penning Atletico Madrid deal

Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre won't sign a new contract until their UEFA Cup qualification is assured.
The Mexican has agreed terms with Atletico, but both parties have agreed not to make it official until their European hopes are decided.
There isn't expected to be any last-minute hitches to Aguirre's continuing, with the coach already putting plans in-place for next season - including the capture of Osasuna midfielder Raul Garcia.
Nice to see things are going along nicely, and now we only need to qualify for the UEFA Cup to assure we've got Aguirre here next season. I'm wondering though, will he only sign another one-year deal?

Atletico Madrid Seek Aguirre Talks
Atletico Madrid president Miguel Angel Gil Marin insists that a final decision on Javier Aguirre's future will be made after speaking with the coach at the end of the season.
The Mexican moved to the Vicente Calderon on a rolling one year contract, and as such, is free in the summer.
It has been a mixed bag of a season for him after a superb one with the less accomplished Osasuna, and though injuries to key players have hampered his efforts, the general consensus still is that he ought to be producing better results.
As of now, Atleti are fighting to secure sixth place and a Uefa Cup berth for next season. President Gil Marin wants an honest chat with his coach once that objective has been met.
"I do not have any doubt that when the objective is met, we will talk," he said, when asked about his coach's future.
"There needs to exist a desire on both sides, to continue working together."
However, he did admit that he was, in general, happy with the direction in which the club was heading: "Ninety per cent of the group is correct, the trainer is correct, the sport direction is correct."
http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=310248People should stop bitching. Even if we'd dramatically miss Uefa Cup, I'd still want Aguirre to stay. People that are saying Atléti has had a bad season need to open their eyes. 5th is the highest reachable position this season, it was never realistic for Atlético to aim for a Champions League place. We've done well if we finish sixth.

Atletico Madrid not up for sale, insists president Cerezo

Troubled Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are not up for sale, according to club president Enrique Cerezo. There have been rumours all week in Spain that former politician Gabriel Camunas is about to make a bid for the club, at the head of a consortium including Vulcan Capital, owners of NBA team Portland Trail Blazers.
Cerezo is quoted in the digital version of Marca on Saturday as saying that "there has been no meeting (with Camunas) nor will there be. This club is not up for sale."
This is not the first time that Cerezo has refused to discuss the possible sale of the club. He and Miguel Angel Gil - son of former owner Jesus Gil - own around 70 per cent of the Atletico shares.
The long-term plan of Cerezo and Gil is to sell the club's downtown Estadio Calderon and instead stage matches at the suburban Peineta stadium, which will be part of Madrid's 2016 Olympic bid.

Javier Aguirre: “If we keep playing like this, we can do great things”
The manager of Atletico de Madrid, Javier Aguirre, commented that “the players are beginning to believe and have understood that if they make sacrifices, they have enough quality to resolve matches”.
“It’s true that at times it seems like they play from memory. The good thing about this team is that the people on the bench fit in in the same way. This has just gotten started and there are many matches left, but if we maintain this seriousness, we have the team to do great things”, emphasized Aguirre.
With regard to one of the goal-scorers, ‘Kun’ Agüero, the Atletico de Madrid coach said that “he’s very comfortable on the pitch. He understands his role on the team and has been able to translate that onto the pitch during matches. He feels important in the locker room, and is enjoying himself”.
Speaking about Italian goalkeeper Abbiati, who debuted in League play, Aguirre commented that ”he’s very sure of himself and he transmits this to the team, besides working really well. With him, Leo Franco and Ismael Falcón, I’m pretty calm about who plays in goal”.
“I’ve known Raúl García for five years and I’ve seen him progress. It’s nothing new to see him score a goal like that. He feels important in the team and sees himself as a central figure, and he acts like it. He’s very mature and today he played a complete match”, he concluded by saying.

We're Beginning To Believe, Declares Aguirre
Javier Aguirre was in positive mood after Atletico Madrid picked up their third consecutive La Liga win in a week, this time beating Osasuna 2-0 at El Calderon.
After picking up just two points from the first three games of the season, Atleti have now won three in three and are looking good in fifth place, five points off leaders Real Madrid.
"The players are beginning to believe and have understood that if they make sacrifices, they have enough quality to resolve matches," said Aguirre after the win over his formr team.
"It’s true that at times it seems like they play from memory. The good thing about this team is that the people on the bench fit in in the same way.
"This has just gotten started and there are many matches left, but if we maintain this seriousness, we have the team to do great things."
The Three Heroes
He also praised the three protagonists, impressive debutant Christian Abbiati and goalscorers Raul Garcia and Sergio Aguero.
On Aguero's third consecutive stunning display, he said: "He is very comfortable on the pitch. He understands his role on the team and has been able to translate that onto the pitch during matches.
"He feels important in the dressing room, and is enjoying himself."
As for Raul Garcia, a player he knows from his days at Osasuna, he commented: "I’ve known Raúl García for five years and I’ve seen him progress. It’s nothing new to see him score a goal like that.
"He feels important in the team and sees himself as a central figure, and he acts like it. He’s very mature and today he played a complete match."
Finally, he gave his thoughts on Abbiati's debut.
"He’s very sure of himself and he transmits this to the team, besides working really hard all the time," said the Mexican. "With him, Leo Franco and Ismael Falcón, I’m pretty calm about who plays in goal."

Manuel Pellegrini's agent has claimed that Chelsea made contact with him following Jose Mourinho's departure.Alberto Poletti has revealed that he has had contact with The Blues and admits the Villarreal boss is keen to try his luck in England.
Interest
"In the last months Atletico Madrid showed interest in him but as he had given his word to Villarreal he will stay with this team until his contract expires and a few weeks ago some people from Chelsea has asked me about him," Poletti told La Tercera."Since Mourinho left Chelsea there have been many candidates for that position and Pellegrini has been one of the names proposed for that position.
"Pellegrini is very interested in working in England because they have one of the most important leagues in the world and Pellegrini is sure that he has the capacity to work there."
Since his early days coaching back in his homeland Chile, Poletti admits he is delighted with how Pellegrini has progressed.
Pleased
"I am very proud in which the way Pellegrini has been growing up in his career because since he left River Plate he had the chance to work in Mexico but he arrived in Villarreal where he has had very good performances," he said.
Pellegrini has been in charge of the Yellow Submarines since 2004 and has been hugely successful at El Madrigal - including guiding them to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2006.
Villarreal currently sit third in La Liga after making the best start to a league campaign in their history, but Pellegrini has less than 12 months left on his current deal and is expected to leave at the end of the season.

Atleti Sack For Physio For Casillas Shirt RequestAtlético de Madrid have sacked one of their physiotherapists after he asked and was given Iker Casillas' shirt following the defeat against Real Madrid at the weekend.
The move by the club medic did not go down well with the board or several officials at the club after the last-minute reverse against their main rivals.
Sebastián Truyols was waiting in the tunnel for the end of the game and, despite Atleti losing with almost the last kick of the game, he rushed on to the pitch to seek out the Madrid keeper.
Casillas appeared to be surprised by the request but was seen to hand over his jersey to the physio before making his way towards the changing rooms.
Club president Enrique Cerezo tried to deny that Truyols was sacked, but Marca insist that he has been removed from his duties after the shirt incident was the last straw.
Many at the club have been unhappy with the number of muscular injuries sustained by Atlético's first team and question marks already hung over Truyols and his treatment of injuries.
Now his lack of tact at a time when emotions were running high have cost him his job and Atleti have already promoted one of their youth team's physios to cover.

Heard in Madrid: "So that's why we were suffering all those injuries"
