I'm my team's captain
Remember, there are differant types of captains. Find the style that works for you. Are you a Keane? A Gerrard? an Henry? A Puyol?
Here are some things that have worked for me.
1)First of all, talk to the coach. Get him to like you. TRY NOT TO ACT LIKE A SUCK-UP
2) Concentrate very hard, try to pickup things and skills quickly. The coach will want someone who has good technical ability.
3) You must be a good speaker. Be able to raise your teams spirit. Simple things in training like " Hard luck" "keep up the good-work" "Great shot, why don't you do that more often? ( make sure to smile when you do this) will get the coach on your side.
4) Get angry when you concede, get freakily ecstatic when you score. The coach likes passion.
5) Commitment is a must. Go for every 50-50 ball.
6) Cut-out your "class-clown" attitude if have one.
7) Try and be as consistent as possible, make it hard for him to leave you out of the team, you'll shoot up the pecking order.
8) Remember, awards tend to go to the captains. Make space in your trophy cabinet

Sorry mate, but what on earth is this? A step by step guide on how to fit the prototype of a leader/captain? LOL "get angry when you concede, go freakily ecstatic when you score" either the joke's went over my head or this is grade A drivel
Anyway, If you want a better shot at bein the captain you should be the best you can be, playing and attitude wise and if you push yourself enough and are good enough, you will naturally start to lead the group you're with. There is normally more than 1 leader on the park and you'll just have to hope it's you who gets picked.
Some of the advice folk have given you is good but it's stuff you should be doing anyway. Things like talking through the game, oraganising and little shouts like "left back", "stand up", "time" etc and lifting the heads when you go a goal down. This type of thing will def help, but if you really want to win, and do as good as possible, you'll want to make sure your team mate does pass to the left back who's open, does stand up and not dive in, does know he's got time on the ball etc and the leadership qualities come out.
As far as wanting to be captain goes, from my POV, I look around the changing room, and if theres someone I feel I have genuine respect for as a player and as a person, whom I respect their knowledege of the game and attitude and can learn a bit from then I'm happy for them to be my captain, if not, and I feel like I'm leading the sidethen I would wan't to be captain. IMO the best thing you can do is be the best you can be in every area and see if the leadership qualities come out, don't set out to specifically be the captain.
