CHICAGO (AP) -- Brian McBride, the only American player to score in two different World Cups, is retiring from international soccer.

The 34-year-old McBride, who plays for Fulham in the English Premier League, is the second-leading scorer in U.S. national team history with 30 goals in 95 games

The three-time World Cup veteran has the second-most appearances for the U.S. in World Cup matches with 10, starting all five games in 2002 and scoring one goal each against Portugal and Mexico. He also had the team's only goal in 1998.

"This is a special day in that I have the opportunity to thank U.S. Soccer for all it has done for me and my family," McBride said. "The consistent and determined efforts of the coaches, staff, and players at U.S. Soccer have helped bless me with the honor of being a part of three World Cups, playing the game I love."

McBride, a native of Arlington Heights, Ill., was the tournament MVP and leading scorer with four goals in the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He led Fulham last season with 10 goals.

"It was an honor to have a player like Brian McBride at the core of the national team during my tenure," said former U.S. coach Bruce Arena. "With his goal scoring, ability in the air and intelligence on both sides of the ball, he is truly a player with qualities unlike any other player to wear the national team uniform."

he did well for us , but his time has come now for someone else to step up
Sushi-Man
this man was undoubtedly one of the best ever representing the USA, hard as nails and always brings it. he will be missed.
Shalrie
He showed true passion for the US. You could see that from the Latvia and Italy matches.
fakemadrid
Definitely will be missed. It's a shame he didn't pass Wynalda for scoring leader before he retired. Hope he sticks it out at Fulham for awhile.

^^ Yeah I was hoping he would break that scoring record but oh well...What a great athlete and person, it seems like.

Good luck Brian.

So next Q, who will take over Ching, EJ, or unknown ? biggrin.gif
kawandinho
yea it would be great to have a humble record holder Wynalda is too full of himself .

i really likes him.
he did good for is. but he was getting up there. i think we need young talent
el_diablo5711
he was a fantastic player but he had a dirt-poor world cup
Edson Buddle
yeah maybe he would have done better if he didnt get nailed in the nose by itlay lol.
he has done well in the world cup isnt he like the leading scorer?
Shalrie
He is the second leading scorer behind Eric Wynalda.

And yes his World Cup was poor, but most of our player's performances were and atleast he played hard unlike somebody whistling.gif

All the players were screwed by the system. You think BMB should play up top by himself? He is the slowest player on the roster. Then he had no one playing off of him bc LD disappeared for along period of time.
But BMB gave it all to the federation and he was a great player for us.

One reason why I love American soccer so much is because they're not pussies that fall down and have to get carted off in a stretcher.

This is exemplified by Daniele DeRossi's red card for elbowing McBride in the face during the USA vs. Italy match. McBride sucked it up (face dripping blood, mind you) and jogged off the pitch. Brilliant.

Any other player would have rolled on the ground and cried like a little boy. *Cough*Materazzi*cough*

People may underestimate American soccer, but they're becoming a force to be reckoned with. As the current players retire, the younger, newer generation that grew up playing football will gain control and take the US National Team where it's never gone before - to the top.

well said.
and i would love to see mcbride's toughness in all eleven of our players.
