He's a Peruvian fullback, 22 years old, originally from Universitario de Deportes from Lima where he made his debut in 2002. A couple of years ago he was sold to Colon Santa Fe in Argentina where he secured a starting position. He's fast, dynamic and tireless, it is not rare to find him on different ends of the field within a matter of seconds... can play midfield and has a wonderful long range shot with his left foot. (If you look around the net you might find a beaut of a freekick he scored on Boca last season) His main flaw seems to be that sometimes he becomes a loose cannon and forgets about his defensive duties. Has some 20+ caps for the national team and was a regular in the 2006 qualifiers.

Vargas wants to go to Portsmouth, I think it's just his agents twho are playing hard ball trying to squeeze a few more pounds from you guys, I believe. Greedy bastards, they are not going to let the guy take the big step to Europe . There's an offer from Catania too I believe.

Well the latest report says that he has chosen portsmouth, and that the deal will be done this thursday, hes already played in a freindly for us i think, Redknapp obviously liked what he saw.

Great news! I wish him all the best and hopefully Redknapp will relieve him of his defensive duties, Vargas can offer a lot more when he is on offense.
Looks like I will be following Portsmouth all season now...

Glad to hear it mate.
I think he made be played wide left in midfield, with Matty Taylor at left back, becasue there we have no one at all with the loss of D'alessandro.
click on Juan Vargas, quality is awful but is all I could get... try reducing your window screen.

Yeah, Catania finally got the upper hand so Juancito will be playing in Serie A
Peruvian websites and papers are saying that Portsmouth tried to back down from their initial bid and were offering less money.

Varguitas going to serie A, that's going to be interesting. Pompey refused to maintain their original bid as news reported and that's why the deal failed. I dont know how much they were offering for another of my compatriots, Jefferson farfan. I think he needed to move to a stronger league.. hey lolo viva la U lo mas grande del Peru compare
by the way pompeyboy, what a debut for Kanu..

Been away for a while, but although I would have love to have seen Vargas in the PL, it seems in retrospect that it was the right move for him to go to Catania. It's a team in which he will be guaranteed a starter spot and to his blessing they have had a good season (non withstanding the 0-7 thrashing of last week). Them staying in serie A for next season only spells good news for Varguitas.

I was meaning to post in this AGES ago but i forgot and i just found the post now
Well im very glad Vargas has ended up staying with Catania, he is a very important player for them to as he is tireless in defence and he is not scared to go up the field and produce some beautiful balls. He is very fast and he has a lethal kick on him, he has played off the top of my head every game in the Serie A this year and he has maintained his left-back position and with a woe-ful defence that Catania has, he has been one of the standouts and this is clear through his performances. The bloke has signed for us for 5 years and he is still young and is improving every week, this is one of the most important buys for us this season and i hope he continues on with his great form.
Forza Catania
